Quitting school, getting a job and her own apartment, made life more bearable, but meeting Linda and Pam, made it worth living. The three girls became best friends. Every Saturday morning they've got together for coffee, and kept that tradition going for many years. Being an orphan, Sammy dreamed of having a big family of her own. Marrying Ted Steel was going to make her dream a reality, she was sure of it. However, by marrying Ted, she inherited a father-in-law from hell. He was the nastiest man Sammy had ever encountered. Having money and power, John Steel was able to pull a perfect scam. When he got his mistress pregnant, and she refused to keep the baby, John switched his son's newborn daughter with his own. It took sixteen years, a divorce, and John's death before Sammy learned that all those years she was raising her husband's half-sister, and a total stranger was taking care of her real daughter. The next chapter of Sammy's life unfolded following a string of events, which landed her in the hospital. With some damage to her vocal cords, she was left at a mercy of a stranger claiming to be her husband. Her efforts to convince the doctor, the nurse and the stranger that she wasn't the person they were claiming her to be, were quickly accredited to her memory loss due to the bump on her head. Sammy had no way of letting them know that her memory was fine. When the stranger took her to his home and his real wife walked into the room, everything started to make sense, the last piece of the puzzle of Sammy's life, was put into place.

Book Distributed Language

Download or read book Distributed Language written by Stephen J. Cowley and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents language as fully integrated with human existence. On this view, language is not essentially ‘symbolic’, not represented inside minds or brains, and most certainly not determined by micro-social rules and norms. Rather, language is part of our ecology. It emerges when bodies co-ordinate vocal and visible gesture to integrate events with different histories. Enacting feeling, expression and wordings, language permeates the collective, individual and affective life of living beings. It is a profoundly distributed, multi-centric activity that binds people together as they go about their lives. Distributed Language pursues this perspective both theoretically and in relation to empirical work. Empirically, it reports studies on the anticipatory dynamics of reading, its socio-cognitive consequences, Shakespearean theatre, what images evoke (in brain and word), and solving insight problems. Theoretically, the volume challenges linguistic autonomy from overlapping theoretical positions. First, it is argued that language exploits a species specific form of semiotic cognition. Second, it is suggested that the central function of language lies in realizing values that derive from our ecosystemic existence. Third, this is ascribed to how cultural and biological symbols co-regulate the dynamics that shape human activity. Fourth, it is argued that language, far from being organism-centred, gives us an extended ecology in which our co-ordination is saturated by values and norms that are derived from our sociocultural environment. The contributions to this volume expand on those originally published in Pragmatics & Cognition 17:3 (2009).

Book Driver Behaviour and Training Volume VI

Download or read book Driver Behaviour and Training Volume VI written by Lisa Dorn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s society must confront major land transport problems. The human and financial costs of vehicle accidents are increasing, with road traffic accidents predicted to become the third largest cause of death and injury across the world by 2020. Several social trends pose threats to safety, including increasing car ownership and traffic congestion, the increased complexity of the human-vehicle interface, the ageing of populations in the developed world, and a possible influx of young vehicle operators in the developing world. The Human Factors in Road and Rail Transport series aims to make a timely contribution to these issues by focusing on the driver as a contributing causal agent in road and rail accidents. The series seeks to reflect the increasing demand for safe, efficient and economical land-based transport by reporting on the state-of-the-art science that may be applied to reduce vehicle collisions, improve the usability of vehicles and enhance the operator’s wellbeing and satisfaction. It will do so by disseminating new theoretical and empirical research from specialists in the behavioural and allied disciplines, including traffic psychology, human factors and ergonomics. The series captures topics such as driver behaviour, driver training, in-vehicle technology, driver health and driver assessment. Specially commissioned works from internationally recognised experts in the field will provide authoritative accounts of the leading approaches to this significant real-world problem.

Book excerpt: "The Last Piece of the Puzzle", is the fourth adventure of our group; of Kate, Danozo, Willo, Geoff, and Tressel. Kate once again finds herself trying to come to grips with having a normal relationship with a person thought to be a God. Normal and God just don't go together as the two have found out before; but once again they try.My writings for the most part are what I call a scrook, half screenplay, half book. You can get the pleasure of reading, and also the feel of your own movie going on. You can immerse yourself into it as one of the characters if you wish; or just read for pleasure. As I said this is the fourth adventure for our group. This can be read as a stand-alone book, but I recommend for more pleasure you read these in order, as the characters get developed; and as they take on their challenges, you will get to know them better and enjoy their different perspectives a little better. You can easily become one of these characters if you wish, appreciating the challenges they face...and just what would you do? The order to read if you so choose is, first, "Farrah C's", two is, "Resurrection", three is, "Kate", and "Last piece of the Puzzle" is fourth. In this one as I said, once again our Kate renews her relationship with Geoff, the smartest man on the planet. This is actually Geoff II, or is it three? He is able to do things that many only think a God should be able to do...hence he is loved...and feared. Geoff's DNA was used to create a child and now the idea of a messiah or an Anti-Christ has developed. Kate tasks herself to find this child before the bad guys do. Dr. Geoff, up and disappears just after he and his team develop a new cure that would possibly save millions. The notes to the experiment disappear with him...why?Our little group has had this ongoing battle to keep nuclear weapons out of the wrong hands. Having secured a nuclear weapon earlier in a sting, and killing half the bad guys; now it is time to get the other half, before they get got. There is enough here to sit back, read, enjoy, pick who you would be in these situations...place yourself in your own movie...enjoyT. David
