This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last of the Mohicans is an epic novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in January 1826. It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time, and helped establish Cooper as one of the first world-famous American writers. The story takes place in 1757 during the French and Indian War, when France and Great Britain battled for control of the American and Canadian colonies. During this war, the French often allied themselves with Native American tribes in order to gain an advantage over the British, with unpredictable and often tragic results. After the Cooper text comes Mark Twain's caustic, funny, and damning "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses." Wherein Twain takes deadly aim at the casual manner in which Cooper wrote. Together for the first time these two classics are perfect counterpoints to one another.

Cooper was an American writer of the first half of the 19th century, whose historical romances depicting colonist and Indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune. Twain draws on examples from The Deerslayer and The Pathfinder from Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales. The essay is characteristic of Twain's biting, derisive and highly satirical style of literary criticism, a form he also used to deride such authors as Oliver Goldsmith, George Eliot, Jane Austen, and Robert Louis Stevenson.

It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time. Its narrative flaws were criticized from the start, and its length and elaborately formal prose style have reduced its appeal to later readers. Regardless, The Last of the Mohicans is widely read in American literature courses. This second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy is the best known. The Pathfinder, written 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel. Cooper named a principal character Uncas after the most famous of the Mohicans. The real Mohicans lived in the colony of Connecticut in the mid-seventeenth century, and not in the New York frontier a century later. Uncas was a Mohegan, not a Mohican, and Cooper's usage has helped to confuse the names of two tribes to the present day. When John Uncas, his last surviving male descendant died in 1842, the Newark Daily Advertiser wrote "Last of the Mohegans Gone" lamenting the extinction of the tribe. The writer was not aware that Mohegans still existed then and to the present day. The story takes place in 1757 during the Seven Years' War (known in America as the French and Indian War), when France and the United Kingdom battled for control of the American and Canadian colonies. Book excerpt: The Last of the Mohicans enjoyed tremendous popularity both in America and abroad, offering its readers not only a variation on the immensely popular traditional captivity narrative of the time, but also characters that would become iconic figures in the young nation’s emerging literature. The novel’s central action follows Leatherstocking and his two faithful friends, Chingachgook and Uncas, as they come to the aid of two daughters of a British officer seeking to become reunited with their father. The novel provides insights into Cooper’s own thinking on Native American and White relations during the early national period, revealing a profound ambivalence to the reality that the rising fortunes of the young United States meant the declining fortunes of the nation’s Native American inhabitants.

Book excerpt: The Last of the Mohicans A Narrative of 1757 By James Fenimore Cooper Excerpt from The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 The choice of T/ze Last of Me. Mo/zimm, as one of the series of readings suggested for use in secondary schools, commends itself as peculiarly felicitous. It would not be easy to name a work of fiction that to the youthful reader may more happily serve to afford a simple insight into the real motive and technique of true fiction. By easy effort the method and scope of the story may be fully grasped; the grouping of incident, in the sequence of time and place, may be followed with increasing zest, and the development of character readily traced and understood. With this three fold end in View, the introduction and notes have been carefully shaped to aid the pupil, in the reading of the volume, to the acquisition of a useful knowledge of the rudiments of interpretation in this department of literary art - the only worthy form of enjoyment and culture that it can yield. The material historical, ethnical, personal, and scenic that the author presents as an aid in the same direction for its simplicity and affluence is simply wonderful, and throughout appeals directly to the sympathy and curiosity of the inquiring pupil. Literally he will find before him in these a feast of good things. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: The Last of the MohicansA Narrative of 1757by James Fenimore CooperThe Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 (1826) is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy and the best known to contemporary audiences. The Pathfinder, published 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel. The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the Seven Years' War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, both the French and the British used Native American allies, but the French were particularly dependent, as they were outnumbered in the Northeast frontier areas by the more numerous British colonists. At the time of Cooper's writing, many people believed that the Native Americans were disappearing, and would ultimately be assimilated or fail to survive. Especially in the East, their numbers continued to decline. At the same time, the author was interested in the period of the frontier of transition, when more colonists were increasing pressure on the Native Americans. He grew up in Cooperstown, New York, which his father had established on what was then a western frontier of settlement; it developed after the Revolutionary War.
