Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Mile-Stone Mrs. Kellam, the philosopher of the "Home of Peace," once said to me: "'Tis the last mile-stone of life we want to be after getting a good footing on, for we can't go on and there's no turning back, and the best of us are not ready to tumble off." So there was my title - The Last Mile-Stone. Then the subject matter is, "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." As for the story of Edith and Jerry, I am now no longer under oath and will not commit myself, but the story might have happened as I tell it. I leave it to the reader to judge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Mile And then: "Sure enough! Good ole American lighthouse! Thank God, Lafayette, we are here!" Unmistakably now the far-off twinkling light showed on the black horizon. Kingsley straightened up and squeezed Broadhurst's arm with an unexpectedly friendly pressure. "I think I'll go to every war we have after this," he exclaimed. "Why is that?" asked Broadhurst. "Haven't you had enough of this one?" "I'll say so! But the thrill of getting home again makes up for it all! Well, now that the war is over, I suppose I might as well catch a little sleep. We've got to get up early." "Right-o," said Broadhurst, "but I think I'll stick around a little longer. See you later." It was worth while, Broadhurst reflected as Kingsley went away in the darkness. To see a shoreline again, even after an ordinary voyage, was a matter of moment. It meant returning to a world that measured some 24,000 miles in circumference instead of a few hundred feet in length. And here, just ahead, were the flickering happy lights of home - he was coming back from France and from the war, after many months of uncertainty. Back to sunlight and peace, and all the old habits of life and all the old friendships. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive biography is the first to present Lewis Milestone's remarkable life -- a classic rags-to-riches American narrative -- in full and explores his many acclaimed films from the silent to the sound era. Creator of All Quiet on the Western Front, Of Mice and Men, the original Ocean's Eleven and Mutiny on the Bounty, Lewis Milestone (1895-1980) was one of the most significant, prolific, and influential directors of our time. A serious artist who believed in film's power not only to entertain, but also to convey messages of social importance, Milestone was known as a man of principle in an industry not always known for an abundance of virtue. Born in Ukraine, Milestone came to America as a tough, resourceful Russian-speaking teenager and learned about film by editing footage from the front as a member of the Signal Corps of the US Army during World War I. During the course of his film career, which spanned more than 40 years, Milestone developed intense personal and professional relationships with such major Hollywood figures as Howard Hughes, Kirk Douglas, Marlene Dietrich, and Marlon Brando. Addressed are Milestone's successes -- he garnered 28 Academy Award nominations -- as well as his challenges. Using newly available archival material, this work also examines Milestone's experience during the Hollywood Blacklist period, when he was one of the first prominent Hollywood figures to fall under suspicion for his alleged Communist sympathies.

Book Black Superheroes Milestone Comics and Their Fans

Download or read book Black Superheroes Milestone Comics and Their Fans written by Jeffrey A. Brown and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-11-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do the comic book figures Static, Hardware, and Icon all have in common? Black Superheroes, Milestone Comics, and Their Fans gives an answer that goes far beyond “tights and capes,” an answer that lies within the mission Milestone Media, Inc., assumed in comic book culture. Milestone was the brainchild of four young black creators who wanted to part from the mainstream and do their stories their own way. This history of Milestone, a “creator-owned” publishing company, tells how success came to these mavericks in the 1990s and how comics culture was expanded and enriched as fans were captivated by this new genre. Milestone focused on the African American heroes in a town called Dakota. Quite soon these black action comics took a firm position in the controversies of race, gender, and corporate identity in contemporary America. Characters battled supervillains and sometimes even clashed with more widely known superheroes. Front covers of Milestone comics often bore confrontational slogans like “Hardware: A Cog in the Corporate Machine is About to Strip Some Gears.” Milestone's creators aimed for exceptional stories that addressed racial issues without alienating readers. Some competitors, however, accused their comics of not being black enough or of merely marketing Superman in black face. Some felt that the stories were too black, but a large cluster of readers applauded these new superheroes for fostering African American pride and identity. Milestone came to represent an alternative model of black heroism and, for a host of admirers, the ideal of masculinity. Black Superheroes, Milestone Comics, and Their Fans gives details about the founding of Milestone and reports on the secure niche its work and its image achieved in the marketplace. Tracing the company's history and discussing its creators, their works, and the fans, this book gauges Milestone alongside other black comic book publishers, mainstream publishers, and the history of costumed characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last War Trail Well, to shorten the story, Deerfoot was in love, and his journeys were made with the purpose of wooing the dusky maiden who had already taken his heart captive. I am sorry to confess that with all the pains that I have used, I have never been able to get any par ticulars about the wife Of this extraordinary young Shawanoe warrior. That She was a member of another tribe was unquestionable, since the Shawanoes at that time lived east of the Mississippi, while her home was many miles westward of the Father of Waters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of the Oscar-winning director and a study of his acclaimed films, like All Quiet on the Western Front, The Front Page, and Of Mice and Men. This comprehensive biography is the first to present Lewis Milestone’s remarkable life—a classic rags-to-riches American narrative—in full and explores his many acclaimed films from the silent to the sound era. Praise for Lewis Milestone “This highly readable biography of Lewis Milestone delivers the definitive study of a leading Jewish émigré director in Hollywood from the 1920s to the 1960s who worked successfully across multiple genres. Robinson seamlessly layers the scholarly expertise of a noted film historian of Russia and the Soviet Union with a novelist’s gift for narrative power and dramatic flair, bringing long overdue attention to Milestone’s fascinating life and enduring artistic achievements.” —Catherine Portuges, University of Massachusetts Amherst “A welcome biography of a man whose films remain better known than his name . . . . Robinson concentrates on the key aspects of Milestone’s life and career, never getting bogged down in plot synopses or other minor issues. Rather than shoveling up endless rubble, he offers us the milestones of Milestone. Robinson’s story is as tight as most classic Hollywood films, and that deserves to be heralded. This is a book equally as valuable to film buffs as to academic scholars, speaking to readers inside and outside the academy.” —LA Review of Books

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . . now a #1 Netflix series! In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer's end they've become TullyandKate. Inseparable. So begins Kristin Hannah's magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives. From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness. Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn't know is how being a wife and mother will change her . . . how she'll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she'll envy her famous best friend. . . . For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship---jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they've survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . . and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test. Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone's Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it's the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It's about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you'll never forget . . . one you'll want to pass on to your best friend.
