Book The Last Days of Steam on the Eastern Region

Download or read book The Last Days of Steam on the Eastern Region written by E. H. Sawford and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Eric Sawford uses a selection of photographs to tell the story of the last days of steam power on the Eastern Region. His pictures show that, while steam locomotives were not withdrawn from the Eastern Region until the mid 1960s, the 1950s was their swan song. The author's photographs document the range of motive power that could be seen on the track in that era. Locomotives are depicted in action and at rest, on the express routes, shunting or being repaired. Also recorded are neglected locomotives during their declining years, when they were used on secondary duties or were laid up before being scrapped.

Book Last Days of Steam Northern and Eastern

Download or read book Last Days of Steam Northern and Eastern written by Tony Butcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s a magnificent array of steam locomotives still operated on the lines that criss-crossed the North and East of Britain. However, in 1955 the Modernisation Plan was issued that showed that steam traction was doomed. By 1960/61 the Beeching Report was starting to have a major effect on the steam fleet and some major and well-liked classes disappeared entirely. All the Princess Royals were withdrawn by the end of 1962 and the Duchesses were eliminated south of Crewe by 1963. All of the 440s were gone by the end of 1962 and many well before that date.

Book The Last Days of Steam in Bristol and Somerset

Download or read book The Last Days of Steam in Bristol and Somerset written by Colin G. Maggs and published by . This book was released on 2009-11-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of a classic text. Although diesel traction had been introduced to the county of Somerset as early as 1958 it was not until 1966, and the closure of the Somerset and Dorset Railway, that steam finally disappeared from the county. Here Colin Maggs has brought together a superb collection of photographs which retell the story of those last days of steam in the area. Depicted in this volume is the unusually wide variety of locomotive power which was to be seen throughout Bristol and Somerset during this era. Alongside the standard GWR and BR classes, are the many MR and LMS types which worked down as far as Bristol, some even making their way through Somerset. Here Southern and, very occasionally, Eastern Region engines were to be found, while the Somerset and Dorset line was the home of the unique class of 7F 2-8-0s. Accompanied by the author's informative captions these evocative pictures, often with a backdrop of splendid scenery, recapture the atmosphere of the end of the age of steam in Bristol and Somerset.

Book Riding Yorkshire s Final Steam Trains

Download or read book Riding Yorkshire s Final Steam Trains written by Keith Widdowson and published by History Press. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keith Widdowson visited the North Eastern Region of British Railways on over forty occasions during the final eighteen months of steam powered passenger services. With the odd exceptions (usually for railtours) most of the locomotives were neglected, run down, filthy, prone to failure and often only kept their wheels turning courtesy of the skills of the crew coaxing them along with loving care. Far from the scenic delights so often justifiably portrayed of the Yorkshire countryside, the ever-dwindling numbers became corralled within the industrialized heartland of Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield and Normanton. Here, Widdowson recalls that bygone era, leading an almost nomadic nocturnal existence on his self-imposed “mission” of stalking the endangered “Iron Horses” in one of their final habitats. He was often far from alone in his quest. The “Haulage-bashing” fraternity comprised of like-minded enthusiasts from throughout Britain, often congregated, lemming like, on the one-coach early morning mail trains, the Summer Saturday holidaymaker trains or the Bradford portions; indeed any passenger service with a steam locomotive at its front From the many disappointments of thwarted possibilities to the euphoric joy of unexpected catches, together with over 130 contemporary images, Riding Yorkshire's Final Steam Trains is a compelling snapshot of the race against time at the end of the golden age of steam.

Book excerpt: China was the last country in the world to build steam locomotives. The final main line engines emerged from Datong workshops in December 1988 and production of steam locomotives for industrial use continued until 1999. The final few steam locomotives were withdrawn from service in 2003, making China the last country to use steam on its main lines. Total eradication of China's steam programme is set to coincide with the Olympic games in 2008. When this happens, it will be the end of the last mecca for fans of real steam. This is a photo essay detailing the end of this era.

Book Shed Side in South Lancashire and Cheshire

Download or read book Shed Side in South Lancashire and Cheshire written by Kenn Pearce and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s and 1960s south Lancashire and Cheshire was criss-crossed by a web of railway lines, servicing the various needs of local industries. The region was a haven for railway enthusiasts who pursued the hundreds of steam workhorses based at British Railways depots in 'chemical towns' such as Warrington, Widnes, Wigan and Sutton Oak, besides Southport and Northwich. While these facilities appeared less glamorous than larger counterparts in Liverpool or Manchester, the stories of the engines, trains and the men who were based at the depots in these towns was no less fascinating. Shed Side in South Lancashire and Cheshireprovides a fascinating portrait of the daily operations of the freight and passenger trains of the region during the final decade of Britain's steam era. It evokes a period of grimy, metal-clattering, smoke-filled industry, and of an era forever etched in our industrial heritage.
