Book Steam Soot and Rust

Download or read book Steam Soot and Rust written by Colin Garratt and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disappearance of the steam locomotive in the land of its birth touched the hearts of millions, but when the government announced the Modernisation Plan for Britain's railways in 1955, under which steam was to be phased out in favour of diesel and electric traction, few people took it seriously. Steam locomotives were an integral part of our daily lives and had been for almost one and a half centuries. Furthermore, they were still being built in large numbers. It was popularly believed that they would see the century out and probably well beyond that. But the reality was that by 1968 a mere thirteen years after the Modernisation Plan steam traction had disappeared from Britain's main line railways. It was harrowing to witness the breaking up of engines, which were the icons of their day, capable of working long-distance inter-city expresses weighing 400 tons on schedules faster than a mile a minute. Top speeds of 100mph were not unknown. This book chronicles the last few years as scrap yards all over Britain went into overtime, cutting up thousands of locomotives and releasing a bounty of more than a million tons of scrap whilst the engines, which remained in service, were a shadow of their former selves; filthy, wheezing and clanking their way to an ignominious end. The pictures in this book are augmented by essays written by Colin Garratt at the time. Although steam disappeared from the main line network it survives in everdwindling numbers on industrial systems such as collieries, ironstone mines, power stations, shipyards, sugar factories, paper mills and docks. In such environments steam traction eked out a further decade and during this time many of the industrial locations closed rendering the locomotives redundant. The British steam locomotive was born amid the coalfields and was destined to die there one and three quarter centuries later.

Book The Best of the Last Days of Steam

Download or read book The Best of the Last Days of Steam written by Colin Gordon Maggs and published by Motorbooks International. This book was released on 1993 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its heyday, the variety of steam on Britain's railways was unrivalled - from thundering express trains to hard-working tank engines - and it offered a tremendous range of possibilities for the enthusiastic steam photographer. The Best of The Last Days of Steam brings together the pick of this wealth of images captured during the 1950s and early 1960s, the last years when 'railways' still meant 'steam'. Famous companies and engines are represented alongside small branch services and behind-the-scenes views of locomotive sheds. The photographs are reproduced in high quality duotone and accompanied by informative captions conveying something of the feeling and atmosphere of those heady days. Often the backdrops and glimpses of railway life are almost as interesting as the locomotives themselves, ranging from country stations to busy London terminii and from isolated mountain routes to intricate urban junctions - all of this is captured on film. The result is a superb and evocative collection of well over a hundred photographs, drawn from all over the British Isles, providing a marvellous wide-ranging record of an era now gone and lost for ever. It will be of interest to all railway enthusiasts and to everyone who retains a nostalgia for the last days of steam.

Book Last Days of Steam Northern and Eastern

Download or read book Last Days of Steam Northern and Eastern written by Tony Butcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s a magnificent array of steam locomotives still operated on the lines that criss-crossed the North and East of Britain. However, in 1955 the Modernisation Plan was issued that showed that steam traction was doomed. By 1960/61 the Beeching Report was starting to have a major effect on the steam fleet and some major and well-liked classes disappeared entirely. All the Princess Royals were withdrawn by the end of 1962 and the Duchesses were eliminated south of Crewe by 1963. All of the 440s were gone by the end of 1962 and many well before that date.

Book The Last Days of Steam on the Eastern Region

Download or read book The Last Days of Steam on the Eastern Region written by E. H. Sawford and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Eric Sawford uses a selection of photographs to tell the story of the last days of steam power on the Eastern Region. His pictures show that, while steam locomotives were not withdrawn from the Eastern Region until the mid 1960s, the 1950s was their swan song. The author's photographs document the range of motive power that could be seen on the track in that era. Locomotives are depicted in action and at rest, on the express routes, shunting or being repaired. Also recorded are neglected locomotives during their declining years, when they were used on secondary duties or were laid up before being scrapped.

Book The Last Days of Steam in Bristol and Somerset

Download or read book The Last Days of Steam in Bristol and Somerset written by Colin G. Maggs and published by . This book was released on 2009-11-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of a classic text. Although diesel traction had been introduced to the county of Somerset as early as 1958 it was not until 1966, and the closure of the Somerset and Dorset Railway, that steam finally disappeared from the county. Here Colin Maggs has brought together a superb collection of photographs which retell the story of those last days of steam in the area. Depicted in this volume is the unusually wide variety of locomotive power which was to be seen throughout Bristol and Somerset during this era. Alongside the standard GWR and BR classes, are the many MR and LMS types which worked down as far as Bristol, some even making their way through Somerset. Here Southern and, very occasionally, Eastern Region engines were to be found, while the Somerset and Dorset line was the home of the unique class of 7F 2-8-0s. Accompanied by the author's informative captions these evocative pictures, often with a backdrop of splendid scenery, recapture the atmosphere of the end of the age of steam in Bristol and Somerset.
