Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Century of Congregationalism, or the Influence on Church and State of the Faith and Polity of the Pilgrim Fathers The present year is fruitful in historical studies and it ibecomes those who to-day represent the Pilgrim faith and polity, to estimate afresh their value, as the traces of their 'power shall be found in the events of the century just closed. At the birth of our nation, in 1776 - a little over a century and a half from the landing of the Pilgrims - it is supposed that the Congregational Churches numbered about seven hundred, with not quite so large a number of ministers. No statistics exist of the communicants, but they could scarcely have averaged over one hundred to a church, making seventy thousand in all. It is a simple thing to turn to the carefully prepared statistical tables of the Congregational Quarterly, and ascertain our present strength, which is as follows: Churches, ministers, 3, 300; membership, 338, 313. This indicates an increase of not quite five fold. The increase is moderate, at best, while it falls far behind that of other denominations which have been running the race at our side. When a boy, I should have been struck with the most incredulous amazement had I heard the idea suggested, (which I certainly never did, ) that a Roman Catholic might possibly be a good man and a sincere Christian; and my only idea of the Pope was that derived from Bunyan's representation of him, as sitting at the mouth of his den, like a disabled wild beast, vainly gnashing his teeth at the pilgrims on their way to the Eternal City. "Pope and Pagan" were always associated in my mind as twin monsters, equally enemies of God and man. When, as I became older, I found that there had been good men in the Catholic Church, I was astonished, but I accepted the explanation offered, that they were exceptional cases - good in spite of their religion, just as Plato was a good man in spite of his paganism. Jf. This, together with the quotation just preceding it, shows that Tertullian did not believe in keeping any Sabbath. He did not believe in a literal Sabbath-day, but held that Sabbath-keeping consisted in doing any act that is pleasing to God. As to Sunday, neither he nor any other Christians of his day observed it as a Sabbath, nor with the idea that Sunday observance was in harmony with the Sabbath law; but they observed it as a festival day which, as has already been shown, they knew had its origin with the heathen. The following quotation is very muc h to the same effect as the preceding, but it is given in order that nothing that Tertullian said of the Sabbath may be lacking: --"Thus Christ did not at all rescind the Sabbath: He kept the law thereof, and both in the former case did a work which was beneficial to the life of his disciples, for he indulged them...
