Book excerpt: The warrior breathed in again, letting the bitterly cold air enter and then leave in a slow, controlled mist from his lips. He crouched low to the ground, removing his helmet from under his arm and placing it in the already fallen snow. With a glance over his shoulder, he observed the life that existed only before a battle. Oryan, son of Armay, was always destined for greatness. After spending his childhood as a slave, he finds himself thrust into a life of competitive fighting, where he realizes his potential as an unconquerable competitor. When his exploits in the arena draw the attention of a high-ranking military officer, he is forced to serve the very Empire his father fought against. Played on the strings of cruel puppeteers, he fights for a future on the brink of chaos. Can one man change the world? If a hero falls, can the heart of another bring him back? Can a life lived in darkness and death ultimately end in forgiveness and redemption? The answers to these questions are at the heart and soul of the man called The Last Archide. 'Chad has created a vivid and incredible world with The Last Archide, and has only begun to tell a tale that can easily be described as epic...this masterful tale enthralls readers.' —C. Trebus, Service Coordinator & Technical Writer

Book IBM Spectrum Archive Single Drive Edition and Library Edition Installation and Configuration Guide

Download or read book IBM Spectrum Archive Single Drive Edition and Library Edition Installation and Configuration Guide written by Larry Coyne and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IBM® Linear Tape File SystemTM (LTFS) is the first file system that works along with Linear Tape-Open (LTO) tape technology to set a new standard for ease of use and portability for open systems tape storage. In 2011, LTFS won an Engineering Emmy Award for Innovation from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. This IBM Redbooks® publication helps you install, tailor, and configure the IBM SpectrumTM Archive Single Drive Edition (SDE) and the IBM Spectrum ArchiveTM Library Edition (LE) products. LTFS is a file system that was originally implemented on dual-partition linear tape (IBM LTO Ultrium 5 tape drives (LTO-5) and IBM TS1140 tape drives). Now IBM Spectrum Archive SDE and LE support IBM LTO Ultrium 8, 7, 6, or 5 tape drives, and IBM TS1155, IBM TS1150, and IBM TS1140 tape drives. IBM Spectrum Archive LE supports the IBM TS4500 tape library, IBM TS3500 tape library, IBM TS3310 tape library, IBM TS3200 tape library express, IBM TS3100 tape library express, and IBM TS2900 tape autoloader express. IBM Spectrum Archive makes tape look and work like any removable media, such as a USB drive. Files and directories appear on the desktop as a directory listing. It is now simple to drag files to and from tape. Any application that is written to use disk files works with the same files on tape. IBM Spectrum Archive SDE supports stand-alone drives only. IBM Spectrum Archive LE supports tape libraries. IBM Spectrum Archive LE presents each cartridge in the library as a subdirectory in the LTFS file system. With IBM Spectrum Archive LE, you can list the contents and search all of the volumes in the library without mounting the volumes by using an in-memory index. This publication is intended for anyone who wants to understand more about IBM Linear Tape System products and their implementation. This book is suitable for IBM clients, IBM Business Partners, IBM specialist sales representatives, and technical specialists.

Book Podcast Journalism

Download or read book Podcast Journalism written by David Dowling and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Podcasting’s stratospheric rise has inspired a new breed of audio reporting. Offering immersive storytelling for a binge-listening audience as well as reaching previously underserved communities, podcasts have become journalism’s most rapidly growing digital genre, buoying a beleaguered news industry. Yet many concerns have been raised about this new medium, such as the potential for disinformation, the influence of sponsors on content, the dominance of a few publishers and platforms, and at-times questionable adherence to journalistic principles. David O. Dowling critically examines how podcasting and its evolving conventions are transforming reporting—and even reshaping journalism’s core functions and identity. He considers podcast reporting’s most influential achievements as well as its most consequential ethical and journalistic shortcomings, emphasizing the reciprocal influences between podcasting and traditional and digital journalism. Podcasting, both as a medium and a business, has benefited from the blurring of boundaries separating news from entertainment, editorial from advertising, and neutrality from subjectivity. The same qualities and forces that have allowed podcasting to bypass the limitations of traditional categories, expand the space of social and political discourse, and provide openings for marginalized voices have also permitted corporations to extend their reach and far-right firebrands to increase their influence. Equally attentive to the medium’s strengths and flaws, this is a vital book for all readers interested in how podcasting has changed journalism.

Book The Lost Archive

  • Author : Marina Rustow
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book The Lost Archive written by Marina Rustow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling look at the Fatimid caliphate's robust culture of documentation The lost archive of the Fatimid caliphate (909–1171) survived in an unexpected place: the storage room, or geniza, of a synagogue in Cairo, recycled as scrap paper and deposited there by medieval Jews. Marina Rustow tells the story of this extraordinary find, inviting us to reconsider the longstanding but mistaken consensus that before 1500 the dynasties of the Islamic Middle East produced few documents, and preserved even fewer. Beginning with government documents before the Fatimids and paper’s westward spread across Asia, Rustow reveals a millennial tradition of state record keeping whose very continuities suggest the strength of Middle Eastern institutions, not their weakness. Tracing the complex routes by which Arabic documents made their way from Fatimid palace officials to Jewish scribes, the book provides a rare window onto a robust culture of documentation and archiving not only comparable to that of medieval Europe, but, in many cases, surpassing it. Above all, Rustow argues that the problem of archives in the medieval Middle East lies not with the region’s administrative culture, but with our failure to understand preindustrial documentary ecology. Illustrated with stunning examples from the Cairo Geniza, this compelling book advances our understanding of documents as physical artifacts, showing how the records of the Fatimid caliphate, once recovered, deciphered, and studied, can help change our thinking about the medieval Islamicate world and about premodern polities more broadly.
