Book The Gow Collection of Scottish Dance Music

Download or read book The Gow Collection of Scottish Dance Music written by Neil Gow and published by Oak Publications. This book was released on 2007-01-26 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential addition to the dance tune library and an important milestone in traditional music publishing. This volume of almost 600 strathspeys, jigs and reels has been compiled from the original collections published between 1784 and 1822 by Niel and Nathaniel Gow, the father and son violinist/composers. Niel Gow revolutionized Scottish music by inventing a new style of bowing, known as the ‘up-driven’ technique, that accented the unique strathspey rhythm. Besides the invaluable contributions of the Gows, other important Scottish composers such as William Marshall and Donald Dow are featured, as well as some of the more important tunes in the traditional Scottish repertoire. This unique collection also features detailed notes on the life and times of Niel and Nathaniel Gow, an analysis of the ‘up-driven’ bow technique, the origination of the strathspey as well as a complete discography and bibliography. This book will prove an invaluable addition to your repertoire and home library.

Book excerpt: A national bestseller, The Class is a riveting and personal book from Ken Dryden. On Tuesday, September 6, 1960, the day after Labour Day, class 9G at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute in a suburb of Toronto assembled for the first time. Its thirty-five students, having written special exams, came to be known as the “Selected Class.” They would stay together through high school, with few exceptions. They would spend more than two hundred days a year together. Few had known each other before. Few have been in other than accidental contact in all the decades since. Their ancestors were almost all from working-class backgrounds. Their parents had lived their formative years through depression and war. They themselves were born into a postwar world of new homes, new schools, new churches. New suburbs. Of new classes like this one. Of boundless possibilities. When almost anything seems within reach, what do we reach for? Ken Dryden was one of these thirty-five. In his varied, improbable life, he had wondered often how he had gotten from there to here. How any of us do. He decided to try and find his classmates, to see how they are, what they are doing, how life has been for them. They talked many long hours, in a way they had never talked before. Most had married, some divorced, most have kids, many have grandkids. This is the story of a place, a time, and so much more.

Book excerpt: Cover Flap In 1642 King Charles realized that he was losing control of England to parliament so he gathered an army to him in Nottingham. Since he couldn't beat the Reform Party in the House of Lords, in the courts, or in public opinion, instead he would kill or capture them. The seers had told Daniel that the ever colder winters and shorter growing seasons would bring violence to the kingdom, and now that prediction was coming true. He could no longer delay moving his clan to the New World, for the nobility were choosing sides, sons against fathers, brothers against brothers. Worst of all, mercenaries were being brought in from the brutal continental wars. When some of Daniel's clansmen were pressed into the king's service, he had no choice but to find them and rescue them. About the Author Skye Smith is my pen name. The Pistoleer is a series of historical adventure novels set in Britain in the 1640's. I was encouraged to write them by fans of my Hoodsman series. This is the fourth of the series, and you should read at least the first novel 'HellBurner' before you read 'Edgehill' because it sets the characters and scene for the entire series. The sequence of the books follows the timeline of the Republic of Great Britain. The chapter headings identify the dates and places. The Appendix gives historical insight in the form of an FAQ. Enjoy. Other Novels By The Same Author: The Hoodsman – 12 historical adventures set in the Norman conquest. Maya’s Aura – 8 new age adventures while tripping around the world. Knut – many historical adventures set in the Viking Era. The Pistoleer – 9 historical adventures set in the English Civil War. The Pistoleer #1 – HellBurner (1638 – 1640) The Pistoleer #2 – Slavers (1640 – 1641) The Pistoleer #3 – Pirates (1641 – 1642) The Pistoleer #4 – Edgehill (1642) The Pistoleer #5 – Brentford (1642) The Pistoleer #6 – Invasion (1642 – 1643) The Pistoleer #7 – Roundway Down (1643) The Pistoleer #8 – Bristol (1643) The Pistoleer #9 – Lyme (1644)

Book Music Entries at Stationers Hall 1710 1818

Download or read book Music Entries at Stationers Hall 1710 1818 written by Michael Kassler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Copyright Act of 1709 protected proprietors of books and music printed after 10 April 1710 who gave copies to the Company of Stationers in London. Upon receipt of a copy, usually within days of its first publication, the Stationers' Hall warehouse keeper entered details into a register. They included the date of registration, the name of the work's proprietor (its author or, if copyright had been transferred, its publisher), and the work's full title, which normally named the composer and the writer of any text and often named the work's performers and dedicatee. Although some publishers put the words 'Entered at Stationers' Hall' on title-pages without actually depositing copies, the information in the registers about the many works that were registered has significant bibliographic value. Because the music entries have not previously been printed and access to them has been difficult, they generally have been ignored by cataloguers and scholars, with the consequence that numerous musical works of this period have been misdated in libraries and reference books. This book makes available, for the first time, the full text of the music entries at Stationers' Hall from 1710 to 1810 and abbreviated details of works entered from 1811 to 1818. Its value is enhanced by the inclusion of locations of copies of most works, together with indexes of composers, authors, performers and dedicatees, and an explanatory introduction by the compiler.
