There are two common laser surgeries presently performed. Laser-Assisted InSitu Keratomileusis (LASIK) and Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK) are the two common procedures currently used, with LASIK predominating. Laser vision correction offers a more accurate correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism when compared with previous procedures such as Radial Keratotomy. Both LASIK and PRK involve the use of the excimer laser system as the main tool for reshaping the cornea. Both procedures have risks associated with them. However, LASIK is a superior procedure due to the increased post-operative visual acuity, higher possibility of treatment, less pain following the procedure, and less scarring during corneal healing.
