Book Ascomycete Fungi of North America

Download or read book Ascomycete Fungi of North America written by Michael W. Beug and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 75 percent of all fungi that have been described to date belong to the phylum Ascomycota. They are usually referred to as Ascomycetes and are commonly found and collected by mushroom enthusiasts. Ascomycetes exhibit a remarkable range of biodiversity, are beautiful and visually complex, and some, including morels and truffles, are highly prized for their edibility. Many play significant roles in plant ecology because of the mycorrhizal associations that they form. Thus it is remarkable that no book dedicated to describing and illustrating the North American Ascomycetes has been published in over sixty years.Filling the gap between technical publications and the limited representation of Ascomycetes in general mushroom field guides, Ascomycete Fungi of North America is a scientifically accurate work dedicated to this significant group of fungi. Because it is impossible to describe and illustrate the tens of thousands of species that occur in North America, the authors focus on species found in the continental United States and Canada that are large enough to be readily noticeable to mycologists, naturalists, photographers, and mushroom hunters. They provide 843 color photographs and more than 600 described species, many of which are illustrated in color for the first time. While emphasizing macroscopic field identification characteristics for a general audience, the authors also include microscopic and other advanced information useful to students and professional mycologists. In addition, a color key to the species described in this book offers a visual guide to assist in the identification process.

Book Relationships Between Stand Age Stand Structure and Biodiversity in Aspen Mixedwood Forests in Alberta

Download or read book Relationships Between Stand Age Stand Structure and Biodiversity in Aspen Mixedwood Forests in Alberta written by Alberta Environmental Centre and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to concerns that intensive logging of Alberta's boreal mixedwood forests may result in a change in forest structure and biota, this report describes forest structure and composition of plant and animal communities in young, mature, and old aspen mixedwood stands of fire origin in Alberta. The information in this report serves as a reference against which structure and biota in harvested forests can be compared. The report begins with a general overview of the flora and fauna of the aspen mixedwood forest, and an examination of the rationale and possible consequences of commercial aspen forestry. Subsequent chapters explore relationships between stand age and microclimate, forest structure and floristics, down woody material, understory vegetation, nonvascular species, birds, and mammals. Chapters addressing featured species cover ungulates, bats, and the flying squirrel. The final chapters discuss relationships between the vertebrate community and forest structure, and provide recommendations for aspen mixedwood forest management in Alberta.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This little book is big fun."—Michael Pollan An illustrated mini-encyclopedia of fungal lore, from John Cage and Terence McKenna to mushroom sex and fairy rings Fungipedia presents a delightful A–Z treasury of mushroom lore. With more than 180 entries—on topics as varied as Alice in Wonderland, chestnut blight, medicinal mushrooms, poisonings, Santa Claus, and waxy caps—this collection will transport both general readers and specialists into the remarkable universe of fungi. Combining ecological, ethnographic, historical, and contemporary knowledge, author and mycologist Lawrence Millman discusses how mushrooms are much more closely related to humans than to plants, how they engage in sex, how insects farm them, and how certain species happily dine on leftover radiation, cockroach antennae, and dung. He explores the lives of individuals like African American scientist George Washington Carver, who specialized in crop diseases caused by fungi; Beatrix Potter, creator of Peter Rabbit, who was prevented from becoming a professional mycologist because she was a woman; and Gordon Wasson, a J. P. Morgan vice-president who almost single-handedly introduced the world to magic mushrooms. Millman considers why fungi are among the most significant organisms on our planet and how they are currently being affected by destructive human behavior, including climate change. With charming drawings by artist and illustrator Amy Jean Porter, Fungipedia offers a treasure trove of scientific and cultural information. The world of mushrooms lies right at your door—be amazed!
