Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Scottish Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments, Vol. 2: With an Account of the Gaelic Language, Literature and Music AS we have already (see ch. Xviii.) given a somewhat minute description of the clan system, it is unnecessary to enter again in detail upon that subject here. We have, per haps, in the chapter referred to, given the most brilliant side of the picture, still the reader may gather, from What is said there, some notion of what had to be done, what immense barriers had to be overcome, ere the High lander could be modernised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Scottish Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments, Vol. 2: With an Account of the Gaelic Language, Literature and Music by Thomas Maclauchlan, and an Essay on Highland Scenery by John Wilson After staying two weeks in Chelmsford Barracks, the regiment proceeded northwards to Scotland by easy stages, and was every where received with overwhelming enthusiasm and lavish hospitality. At Cambridge, for example, Sergeant Anton, in his Military Life, tells us, the bells welcomed the Royal Highlanders with joy; every table smoked with savoury viands for their entertainment, and every cellar. Contributed a liberal supply of its best October for their refreshment. The same thing occurred at Huntingdon and other towns, and at several places the men received a donation equal to two day's pay. And so it was at every town through which the regi ment had to pass; the men were feted and petted as if they had saved their country from destruction. Book Folklore of the Scottish Highlands

Download or read book Folklore of the Scottish Highlands written by Anne Ross and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The folklore of the Scottish Highlands is unique and very much alive. Dr Anne Ross is a Gaelic-speaking scholar and archaeologist who has lived and worked in crofting communities. This has enabled her to collect information at first hand and to assess the veracity of material already published. In this substantially revised edition of a classic work first published 30 years ago, she portrays the beliefs and customs of Scottish Gaelic society, including: seasonal customs deriving from Celtic festivals; the famous waulking songs; the Highland tradition of seers and second sight; omens and taboos, both good and bad; and, chilling experiences of witchcraft and the Evil Eye Rituals associated with birth and death. Having taken her MA, MA Hons and PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Anne Ross became Research Fellow in the School of Scottish Studies, Edinburgh. She then rapidly established herself as one of Britain's leading Celtic scholars. Her seminal work is "Pagan Celtic Britain" and she has also published "Druids - Preachers of Immortality" with Tempus Publishing.

They are here reprinted, by the kind permission of Messrs. Blackwood, 83 with many corrections and great extensions, amounting to more than two-thirds of the volume. The original intention of the work was to present to the admirers 0 Scottish literature, where it differs from that of England, only such words as were more poetical and humorous in the Scottish language than in the English, or were altogether wanting in the latter. The design gradually eirtended itself as the compiler proceeded with his task, i it came to include large numbers of words derived SE from the Gaelic or Keltic, with which Dr. Jamieson, the 5 author of the best and most copious Scottish Dictionary Nhitherto published, was very imperfectly or scarcely at all acquainted, and which he very Often wofully or ludi crously misunderstood.
