Download or read book The Land Where We Were Dreaming and Other Poems of Daniel Bedinger Lucas Classic Reprint written by Daniel Bedinger Lucas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land Where We Were Dreaming, and Other Poems of Daniel Bedinger Lucas It was the fate of much Southern poetry to have been written during the stormy period of our Civil War and hence to have been overlooked and neglected. War may furnish incitement to the production of poetry, but it does not generate that attitude of quiet and content most conducive to gentle, poetic reading. Indeed misfortune befell much poetry of this period, for when it was not ignored, it was frequently disparaged because of sectional alignments and prejudices. Fortunately much of this poetry has in the last generation or so been rediscovered, and, of course, more justly appraised. Some of it that owed its popularity in the first instance to transient hostility and disturbing passion has found its true level, and is now valued, if valued at all, because of its historical significance. Far more of it has been given a higher place because of its inherent or essential value. Under the surface disturbed by emotions sometimes violent in their nature depths of genuine poetic sentiment have been sounded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Dreams: And Other Poems The land of dreams. There is a land no mortal chart hath noted, Lying remote, a sunset Land of Ease, - Whereto the voyager is softly floated Across Lethean seas. It is a region over whose existence The shades of doubt and disbelief are cast; A Realm that lies, obscured by night and distance, Vague, visionary, vast; Whereof I haste to bring, O friends and strangers! Some brief account; for I am travel worn; But lately reaching, after many dangers, The margins of the morn. The mountains lift their summits, dim and hoary, In melancholy grandeur, far away; And all things wear a pale and languid glory, Unknown to brazen day. There ancient Night, her starry rule sustaining, Sways her mild sceptre over sea and land; Amid her loyal court serenely reigning, With peace at her right hand; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: Ill EDUCATION The father of Washington received his education at Appleby School in England, and, true to his alma mater, he sent his two elder sons to the same school. His death when George was eleven prevented this son from having the same advantage, and such education as he had was obtained in Virginia. His old friend, and later enemy, Rev. Jonathan Boucher, said that George, like most people thereabouts at that time, had no education than reading, writing and accounts which he was taught by a convict servant whom his father bought for a schoolmaster; but Boucher managed to include so many inaccuracies in his account of Washington, that even if this statement were not certainly untruthful in several respects, it could be dismissed as valueless. Born at Wakefield, in Washington parish, Westmoreland, which had been the home of the Wash- ingtons from their earliest arrival in Virginia, George was too young while the family continued there to attend the school which had been founded in that parish by the gift of four hundred and forty acres from some early patron of knowledge. When the boy was about three years old, the family removed to Washington, as Mount Vernon was called before it was renamed, and dwelt there from 1735till 1739, when, owing to the burning of the homestead, another remove was made to an estate on the Rappahannock, nearly opposite Fredericksburg. Here it was that the earliest education of George was received, for in an old volume of the Bishop of Exeter's Sermons his name is written, and on a flyleaf a note in the handwriting of a relative who inherited the library states that this autograph of George Washington's name is believed to be the earliest specimen of his handwriting, when he was probably not more than eight or nine years old.
