They had their great cities when the tribes of Britain rambled in primeval forests. They manu factured paper nine hundred years before Europe had dis covered the useful art. They invented printing at least five hundred years before the Dutchman took the impres sion of the letters he had carved upon the tree. They had used the mariner's compass for five centuries before Marco Polo brought it into Europe. They had an extensive manufacture of pottery and porcelain ages before the ele gant forms of Grecian or Etruscan pottery were moulded. They were acquainted with abstruse philosophies and curious sciences before the Republic of Rome had arisen. From hoar antiquity popular education had existed in the land, and by a system of competitive examinations every office of the State has been thrown open even to the poorest. Thus China, as a great and civilised nation, comes down the stream of time side by side with the ancient empires of Egypt, Assyria, and India. But China has not passed away as its early contemporaries did, but is to - day as populous, as strong, and as promising in regard to the future as it has ever been.
