Download or read book The Land of Sacred Story Classic Reprint written by John Lemley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-13 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Sacred Story Knowing that in a certain sense we were traveling for the benefit Of others, we constantly kept before our mind the necessity Of thoroughness, and Often climbed through ruins on foot under a burning sun, which we would not have done, but for the necessity of seeing what we have described. In many instances we give the present native name Of places. We do this for the benefit Of Bible students. The native name is given in italic, and, in most instances, either pre ceded or followed by the translation. Should this narrative fall into the hands of those who still have honest doubts about the truthfulness Of the Bible, we can but hope the many allusions we make, and incidents related illustrating the fulfillment of its predictions, will be helpful to them. Many a man says ifi could only be assured, I would believe. We assure all such, that time and again we were overwhelmed with the reality Of the Sacred Record. With this brief introduction, we invite the reader to the narrative itself, hoping God will bless you in the reading as he has us in the writing. Book Lands of Sacred Story

Download or read book Lands of Sacred Story written by James Thomas Nichols and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lands of Sacred Story: Sketches of Travel and Personal Experiences Which Appeared in the Christian Union During 1908-1909 It is a pleasure to introduce a man one loves, to speak upon a theme of sacred interest. The very introduction gives one a sort of fellowship with the message that is borne to the people, and he feels a selfish joy in the good that is done. Such is the feeling of the writer of these lines as he speaks to the public of James T. Nichols and the new book, The Lands of Sacred Story. Mr. Nichols as editor of the Christian Union, has proven himself a writer of rare power. God has given him the ability to say much in little space. His editorials have taken rank as among the very best things that have been said for our people's distinctive work and in the advocacy of the gen eral advance movement of the religious world. Many of us have felt that his writings should have a far wider field than that afforded by a State paper, even if the latter be of exceptional value and of large circulation. But when this man of God turns to the narrative of his own travels in the land made sacred by the ministry of Jesus, he is at his best. Of reverent faith and discerning judgment, he enters so sympathetically into the narrative that one feels the story of the land even as he sees the land declare it. Book The Beginning of Heaven and Earth

Download or read book The Beginning of Heaven and Earth written by Christal Whelan and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865 a French priest was visited by a small group of Japanese at his newly built church in Nagasaki. They were descendants of Japan's first Christians, the survivors of brutal religious persecution under the Tokugawa government. The Kakure Kirishitan, or "hidden Christians," had practiced their religion in secret for several hundred years. Sometime after their visit the priest received a copy of the Kakure bible, the Tenchi Hajimari no Koto, "Beginning of Heaven and Earth," an intriguing amalgam of Bible stories, Japanese fables, and Roman Catholic doctrine. Whelan offers a complete translation of this unique work accompanied by an illuminating commentary that provides the first theory of origin and evolution of the Tenchi. Today, the few Kakure Kirishitan communities still in existence view the Tenchi as strange and flawed, expressing a distorted form of Christianity. It is, however, the only text produced by the Kakure Kirishitan that depicts their highly syncretistic tradition and provides a colorful window through which to examine the dynamics of religious acculturation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Sunflower Land: Stories of God's Own Country And, in the main, very happy and contented are the favored subjects of this prosperous monarch. For twenty-five, fifty and seventy years of experi ence have shown them that he is steady and reli able, faithful to those who call upon him, and never failing those who cultivate him. So these subjects, with such deviation as national and political exigency has prescribed, have gone their ways, content with present abundance and careless of outside comment have lived their lives in their own manner, sung their songs, and cherished their traditions until modern progress came to the fair dominion and knocked at the gate: That was the beginning of the new Missouri and the new Kansas. Whether it destroyed the charm of the older life, or by its benefits atoned for the inva sion, they may say who will. But is it not true that the literature, the poetry, the romance of a country turns to humanity in its simple, original type, and finds its material where the rushing spirit of the century has produced the least efface ment? Book The Land and the Book Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Land and the Book Vol 1 of 2 written by William McClure Thomson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land and the Book, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Biblical Illustrations Drawn From the Manners and Customs, the Scenes and Scenery of the Holy Land Every sincere attempt to illustrate the Word of God is in itself commendable. On this fundamental fact the author rests his apology for obtruding the present work upon the notice of the public. Commentaries are daily multiplying; geographies and dictionaries, researches and travels almost innumerable, lend their aid to the student of the sacred page, and it is not proposed to add another to the long list. The author does not attempt a consecutive comment on any par ticular book of the Bible, but selects indiscriminately from all, such passages as contain the themes he desires to eluci date. The field is ample, and it is abundantly rich in sub jects for scenic and pictorial description. Whether he has succeeded in working out his own idea or not must be left for others to determine, but, if he has failed, it has not been through want of opportunity to study the originals of which his pictures are to be copies. For a quarter of a century he has resided amid the scenes and the scenery to be described, and from midday to midnight, in winter and in summer, has gazed upon them with a joyous enthusiasm that never tired. The first impressions, corrected and improved by subsequent study and examination, are now reproduced for the eye of the public and the heart of the pious. Download or read book Holy Land and Holy Writ Classic Reprint written by John T. Durward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Land and Holy Writ There is no originality in this linking together of the Bible and Palestine on our title page. It has been gracefully done by both Thomson and Geikie. In fact it can hardly be avoided; for the book, to be understood, must be illustrated by the habits of the people among whom it was written, and to be beautiful, must be illustrated by the vistas of Palestine's moun tains, plains, and waters; and on the other hand, the land would be a most unprofitable one for the traveler in saddle or in spirit, without its life history and without the halo that Scripture hangs around it.
