Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Greece: Described and Illustrated The nature of his subject afforded the writer no scope, even if he had had the opportunity or the ability, for original research nor is it necessary for him to cumber these pages with a list of authori ties which are familiar and accessible to every student. A few facts as to the results of recent explorations at Olympia and Mycenae have been gleaned from the new edition, prepared by Mr. Tozer, of Bishop Wordsworth's excellent Greece: Pictorial, Descriptive, and Histori cal but the compiler has very seldom consulted this work, because its avowed object is very similar to that he has himself had in view, though his method of treatment will, he ventures to think, he found to be essentially different. The statements of historical fact are based chiefly on Grote, though Thirlwall has also been consulted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Greek and Macedonian Land Battles of the 4th Century B C

Download or read book Greek and Macedonian Land Battles of the 4th Century B C written by Fred Eugene Ray, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-10-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its mixture of famous battles and storied commanders, warfare in 4th century B.C. Greece has long held a fascination for military enthusiasts and the general public alike. Histories, biographies, and popular culture have turned the exploits of noted generals like Xenophon and Iphicrates of Athens, Epaminondas of Thebes, and the father-son team of Philip II and Alexander the Great of Macedonia into the stuff of legend. Drawing from ancient accounts along with suitable analogs, this detailed work offers meticulous reconstructions of 187 of the 4th century's most significant land engagements, considering tactical patterns, evolving trends, and the lasting impact of the era's most influential military minds. By separating myth from reality, these recreations provide incredible insight into past ways of war that continue to influence the course of combat today.

Book The Land of Greece Described and Illustrated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... from Zacynthus, the most southerly of the group, and is much nearer to the islands of the Archipelago. The circumstance that for nearly three thousand years the islands of the Ionian Sea have figured in European history is at once explained by their geographical position. They lie directly in the path of early Hellenic emigration to the West: they are the natural stepping-stones between Greece and Italy; and now that the tide has turned, and the current of commerce, art, and civilization flows from the Western lands to the decaying Orient, they still constitute, as it were, the portals of Greece. The geological formation of all the islands is identical with that of the mainland: they are vast masses of limestone rock, and may be regarded as a prolongation in the sea of the south-western offshoots of the Pindus range. They are widely different in shape and physical aspect, though all are rugged and mountainous. In Zacynthus the milder character of the scenery and the luxuriance of the semitropical vegetation have gained for the island the name of "The Flower of the Levant." Cephallenia, Ithaca, and Leucadia are wilder and more stern in aspect, their hills are more lofty and bare of wood; while Corcyra combines the landscape characteristics of both the southern and the middle islands. But all alike are beautiful; and as the traveller gazes on their olive-clad heights and their picturesque coasts from the sea, he may well echo Byron's impassioned exclamation, -- "The isles of Greece, the isles of Greece, Where burning Sappho loved and simp; Where grew the arts of war and peace." Though not the largest, Corcyra is the most populous and important of the islands. It has a place in the mythic tradition, and a still greater one in the ascertained...

Download or read book Gifts of the Gods written by Andrew Dalby and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we think about when we think about Greek food? For many, it is the meze and the traditional plates of a Greek island taverna at the height of summer. In Gifts of the Gods, Andrew and Rachel Dalby take us into and beyond the taverna in our minds to offer us a unique and comprehensive history of the foods of Greece. Greek food is brimming with thousands of years of history, lore, and culture. The country has one of the most varied landscapes of Europe, where steep mountains, low-lying plains, rocky islands, and crystal-blue seas jostle one another and produce food and wine of immense quality and distinctive taste. The book discusses how the land was settled, what was grown in different regions, and how certain fruits, herbs, and vegetables became a part of local cuisines. Moving through history—from classical to modern—the book explores the country’s regional food identities as well as the export of Greek food to communities all over the world. The book culminates with a look at one of the most distinctive features of Greece’s food tradition—the country’s world renown hospitality. Illustrated throughout and featuring traditional recipes that blend historical and modern flavors, Gifts of the Gods is a mouth-watering account of a rich and ancient cuisine.

Book The Geography of Thought

Download or read book The Geography of Thought written by Richard Nisbett and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Richard Nisbett showed an animated underwater scene to his American students, they zeroed in on a big fish swimming among smaller fish. Japanese subjects, on the other hand, made observations about the background environment...and the different "seeings" are a clue to profound underlying cognitive differences between Westerners and East Asians. As Professor Nisbett shows in The Geography of Thought people actually think - and even see - the world differently, because of differing ecologies, social structures, philosophies, and educational systems that date back to ancient Greece and China, and that have survived into the modern world. As a result, East Asian thought is "holistic" - drawn to the perceptual field as a whole, and to relations among objects and events within that field. By comparison to Western modes of reasoning, East Asian thought relies far less on categories, or on formal logic; it is fundamentally dialectic, seeking a "middle way" between opposing thoughts. By contrast, Westerners focus on salient objects or people, use attributes to assign them to categories, and apply rules of formal logic to understand their behaviour.
