Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Footprint: And Other Stories Arrived without mishap in those sharky, blistering waters, we cruised week after week, month after month, seeking the key to Arundel's map. I can only tell you, he had said, that there are two bays, very much alike, separated by high sand-dunes. The bay to the north is marked, where it bites deepest into the desert, by a kind of granite monolith that you can see for miles. It must be fifty feet high, and looks like an obelisk in the making. The trail starts a little to the north of this, and then you can apply the map, and it will tell you more than I can. Book A Few Footprints Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Few Footprints Classic Reprint written by John Passmore Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Few Footprints I was born March e4th, 1823, in Blackwater, a small village, situated between Redruth and Truro, in Cornwall, which contained at the time about two hundred inhabitants. My father was a Cornishman and by trade a carpenter, and my mother, whose maiden name was Passmore, was a native of Newton Abbot, Devonshire. I had three brothers, William, Richard, and James. The cottage in which I and my brothers were born consisted of four small rooms. As there was not much carpentering to do in the neighbourhood, and my father not being fully employed, he built, mainly by borrowed money, a larger house near by, for which he obtained a public-house licence. Though the new house had eight small rooms, it had more rooms than windows consequently two bedrooms at the back of the house had no direct window light, but only borrowed light from a small window between the two rooms, over the stairs. I mention this circumstance to recall the fact that during the early part of the last century almost every thing consumed by the people was taxed, including the wood, glass, and other materials used in the production of windows, and the windows as well. One of the results of this state of things was that I, with one of my brothers, slept thousands of times in a small bedroom into which the light of heaven never directly entered. As with us, so with hundreds of thousands of others. The window tax alone assisted to enfeeble the British race. As with the window tax, so with hundreds of other taxes, including the tax on bread, which still more enfeebled the race, and which a partisan states manship would triumphantly re-impose, and thereby endanger the power and prosperity of the country. I well remember some Of the blighting effects of the Corn Laws, when large numbers of the industrious poor of Cornwall ate barley bread, and many had not enough of that. The repeal of the Corn Laws and the introduc tion of a Free Trade era soon broadened and brightened national prospects. Book Footprints of Miles Standish Classic Reprint

Download or read book Footprints of Miles Standish Classic Reprint written by B. F. Decosta and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Footprints of Miles Standish For nearly two centuries and a half the coast of Cape Cod has been celebrated in the annals of shipwreck and disaster. This point of land, according to the imaginative geographer, constitutes the right arm of Massachusetts; and thus our ancient Commonwealth comes to be responsible for every barbarous salutation extended to the Atlantic voyager approaching these shores. The Cape pushes its treacherous sands out into the very heart of ocean navigation. It spreads the dangerous flats across the path of the tall and stately ship, idling on her way from India, and weaves its toils for the shallop of the laborious fisherman. Book The California of the Padres

Download or read book The California of the Padres written by Elizabeth Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California of the Padres: Or Footprints of Ancient Communism Will the reader now accompany me for a short time to the early days of California, long previous to '49, and make some acquaintance with the land and people, while the gold still slept in the hills, and herds strayed and fed over the millions Which the strong hand of the anglo-saxon has torn from the soil? Scattered up and down our rapidly growing State, monuments of an epoch already past, stand the rudely built, yet picturesque edifices known as Missions. These consist of a church, generally substantially built of adobe and plastered, of a peculiar, but not ungraceful style of archi tecture, and various outbuildings subserving the purposesbf barns, granaries or dwellings. These Missions, from their attractive situations, have often become the sites of towns, and, in many cases, the pueblos or villages formed by the settlement of the Spanish soldiers attached to the garrison of the Mission, the germs of cities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Country's Foe, as Seen in Its Footprints Dear Bro.: I have the honor to transmit to you the following resolution, this clay adopted by our Lodge: "Resolved, That the thanks of McArthur Lodge No. 364, I.O.O.F., be tendered Dr. Blair for his able address, and a copy be solicited for publication by this Lodge, if agreeable with his feelings." Dear Bro.: Your note containing the estimate of my address on the part of your Lodge, and asking a copy for publication, has been received. Please accept two things of about equal value: The first, is my thanks for the proffered honor; the second is the manuscript of a hastily prepared address, to be dealt with as your resolution proposes, if in the judgment of your Lodge it will subserve the public good in any degree. To the intelligent gentlemen whose society I so much enjoy, and whose friendship I so highly appreciate, but with whom I am obliged, by honest convictions, to differ on the civil issues of our day, I take the liberty in the same kind spirit with which we have so often conversed together, to dedicate the following Address.
