Book Alisha A Desert Urchin Part II Alharibin

Download or read book Alisha A Desert Urchin Part II Alharibin written by Frank Keith and published by Frank Keith. This book was released on 1901 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worst sand storm from time immemorial is rushing over the lands of Sultan Mejhem ibn El-Hashem’s territory. Within its murkiness and brutally assaulted by sand and dust trots a large caravan. It comes from the coastal city of Tyre and its mission is to bring the Byzantine ambassador to el-Hashem in Sakakah. The goal is to bring the two allies closer together in their fight against the barbarian tribes from the far north. Meanwhile, Alisha, Zenobia and the Vandal Geisarix are still locked up in the dungeon. The girls had fallen from grace with the sultan and would from now on serve as sexual objects for his soldiers. But things turn out a little different than everyone thinks. The girls are unexpectedly released from their cells. They are brought back into the palace, where they are cleaned, handed new clothes and prepared to be served as sex slaves for special guests of the sultan. As it turns out, this is a prime opportunity for Alisha and Zenobia to escape, but not before they are forced to perform an awful deed. They manage to free others from the dungeons too and make their way into the city, barely escaping recapture from roving patrols of soldiers. Alisha safely guides the other escapees to a certain house in the city, whose owner she knows. They are safe there for the time being, but on the next day already they are once again forced to flee. They make their way to Farid’s house. There they also find shelter and a hiding place and they even learn that Farid is the true emir of Sakakah. In addition, they get informed about other truths concerning the sultan and other persons. But their prime concern is getting out of the city. This is made very difficult by the sultan’s significant search efforts to find them. When they are informed that a delegation of Vandals is coming to town, it raises the hopes of Alisha, Zenobia and Geisarix, for they expect to get help from them to escape the sultan’s clutch. However, this still poses problems since the delegation is not a large force at all, but merely a small group of warriors. The three fugitives are taken to another house in yet another part of the city. There, Geisarix and the girls enjoy a big surprise; another Vandal sits before them on a chair, bound and gagged. He is freed from the fetters, and then he and Geisarix make plans that will hopefully help them to escape. But then they get informed that the sultan and the Vandals are no longer enemies and that the sultan and the Byzantines are no allies. What does this mean for the escapees? Is this news even true, or did the diabolical emir concoct a deception? If not, what will happen to the Vandal delegation? The sultan has no Geisarix to present them with, after all, and this was the main reason why the Vandal delegation had been summoned to Sakakah in the first place. Will there be a war now, or will the opposing parties find a consensus?

Book excerpt: "Why are we fighting this war? Because evil must be resisted, and sooner or later there comes a time when men of principle have to make a stand. Because war is good for business and it's better to die on our feet than live on our knees. Because they started it. But at this stage in the proceedings," he added, with a slightly lop-sided grin, "mostly from force of habit." A soldier with a gift for archery. A woman who kills without care. Two brothers, both unbeatable generals, now fighting for opposing armies. No one in the vast and once glorious United Empire remains untouched by the rift between East and West, and the war has been fought for as long as anyone can remember. Some still survive who know how it was started, but no one knows how it will end. This serial novel from the World Fantasy Award winning K. J. Parker is the story of a war on a grand scale, told through the eyes of its soldiers, politicians, victims and heroes. The first three parts of The Two of Swords will arrive in April 2015, with further installments to be released monthly. This is the third installment in the Two of Swords serialization.

  • Author : Nicholas Ivor Martin
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press
  • Release : 2013-10-30
  • ISBN : 0810888696
  • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book The Opera Manual written by Nicholas Ivor Martin and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are getting ready for a performance of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and you have a few questions. How many clarinets are in the orchestra? How many orchestra members appear onstage? How many different sets are there? How long does the opera typically run? What are the key arias? Are any special effects or ballet choreography required? Who owns the rights? Where was it premiered? What are the leading and supporting roles? The Opera Manual is the only single source for the answers to these and other important questions. It is the ultimate companion for opera lovers, professionals, scholars, and teachers, featuring comprehensive information about, and plot summaries for, more than 550 operas—including every opera that is likely to be performed today, from standard to rediscovered contemporary works. The book is invaluable, especially for opera professionals, who will find everything they need for choosing and staging operas. But it is also a treasure for listeners. Similar reference books commonly skip over scenes and supporting characters in their plot summaries, lacking even the most basic facts about staging, orchestral, and vocal requirements. The Opera Manual, based on the actual scores of the works discussed, is the only exhaustive, up-to-date opera companion—a “recipe book” that will enable its readers to explore those operas they know and discover new ones to sample and enjoy.

Book Voicing Dissent in Seventeenth Century Spain

Download or read book Voicing Dissent in Seventeenth Century Spain written by Patricia Manning and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Spanish Inquisition looms large in many conceptions of the early modern Hispanic world, relatively few studies have been made of the Spanish state and Inquisition’s approach to book censorship in the seventeenth century. Merging archival and rare book research with a case study of the fiction of Baltasar Gracián, this book argues that privileged authors, like the Jesuit Gracián, circumvented publication strictures that were meant to ensure that printed materials conformed to the standards of Catholicism and supported the goals of the absolute monarchy. In contrast to some elite authors who composed readily transparent critiques of authorities and encountered difficulties with the state and Inquisition, others, like Gracián, made their criticisms covertly in complicated texts like El Criticón.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html How to bring the life and activities of theological students to the Church? They should arouse religious and theological independence in them ... Now, let the guardians of the church, instead of scolding the academy, its professors and students, instead of intensely searching for heresies in their writings and misconduct in their behavior, indicate ways to introduce this condition ... But life is not studied in a theological school! On the contrary, young people, already separated from their estates by life, are even more clogged from it by seminary pedagogy. Naturally, it’s not life’s fighters, zealots of truth, but dry theorists, artificially raised resonators who will leave the school: should they be given the message of life, heal the brokenhearted, release the tormented to freedom! ”(Rev. Anthony Khrapovitsky) ... True, these words were spoken a little later, in 1896, but they could have been spoken earlier ... Here, pastoral jealousy is sharply confronted and diverges from official and official unbelief ... Since the mid-80s, this pastoral awakening, the renewal of the pastoral ideal has already been very noticeable ... This was most evident in the St. Petersburg Academy when Yanyshev was replaced as rector by Arseniy Bryantsev, vposl. Archbishop of Kharkov. The Academy Inspector was transferred from Kazan, then still Archimandrite, Anthony Vadkovsky (1846-1912), afterwards. Metropolitan of St. Petersburg. He was a man of great cordial sympathy and benevolence. Around him there is a circle of zealots of a monastic feat, the so-called. “Squad.” After a twenty-year hiatus, tonsure again begins in the student community. The ascetic ideal at the same time internally merges with the pastoral vocation, this was a new feature.

Book A M Klein Complete Poems

Download or read book A M Klein Complete Poems written by A.M. Klein and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1990-12-15 with total page 1187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is for his poetry that A.M. Klein is best known and most warmly remembered. This collection includes all Klein's poetry, both original works and translations from Hebrew, Yiddish, Aramaic, and Latin. Many of them, coming from all periods of his careers, have never been published. The poems are arranged chronologically according to date of composition. This makes possible, for the first time, an appreciation of Klein's poetic development. The editor's introduction places this development in the perspective of Klein's life and time, and in particular explores Klein's lifelong struggle to reconcile his dual vocations as both a Jewish and a modernist writer. The textual apparatus identifies all authoritative versions for each poem and lists all emendations and all substative variants in both published and mauscript versions. The explanatory notes gloss obscure terms and references. They also provide a rich context for appreciation and interpretation by drawing connections with Klein's life, his wide reading, and his work as a whole. Wherever possible, Klein's own numerous, but scattered, comments on his poems have been cited.
