Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and young people who are visibly different face significant social and psychological challenges at school. Educating Children with Facial Disfigurement demystifies a difficult and delicate subject. Teachers and others working in education can use this book to acquire a better knowledge of the issues involved, as well as the confidence to handle sensitive issues and foster inclusive attitudes both in and out of the classroom. There are many causes of facial disfigurement - birthmarks, cleft lip and palate, burns, scars and serious skin conditions - so it is essential that all schools know about the issues arising from visible difference. Jane Francis examines many of these issues and demonstrates in a practical way how to deal with: * staring, curiosity and questions, teasing, name-calling and bullying * medical needs, special educational needs and related issues * creating inclusive school communities * self-perception and self-expression * career ideas, work experience and social skills for life. With illustrative case studies, lesson ideas and references to useful resources, this book will be of particular relevance to teachers with responsibility for special educational needs or pastoral care.

Book excerpt: ThePigeons.net is a new generation of Avian hybrid super heroes fighting drug lords, hostile enemies and terrorist. It's creation was the result of one couple's courage to enter a transporter and exit half human and half pigeon and fly along with their racing pigeons, now a million-dollar enterprise, with competitors willing to pirate, trap or kill their competition. The story start as a gentleman addresses six females and six male recruits, all with something in common; some are monoplegics, paraplegics, and quadriplegics. "Ladies and gentleman, you have been selected to part of a new and special team of Avian hybrid agents, destined to be the next generation of Super Heroes. In front of each of you, within those small wooden cages are paired male and female pigeons; your life will depend on them and their lives will depend upon you. "I want to thank you all for volunteering, you have been specially selected based on your special talents. Most of you are veterans of the Iraqi and Afghanistan war. You will be this generation's true super heroes that weren't born in a comic book. "You will be the first secret Avian hybrid security force. My definition, an Avian hybrid is a composite of or two or more species of animals and/or humans. In ancient times, they were only myths, folklore, characters in books and are depicted in works of art. Those were myths, you will be true legends. You will shortly enter the process of your hybrid transformation into half human and half pigeon. "Ladies, gentlemen we owe all this due to the genius of the creator of the Apocalyptic Transporter and the bravery of Bob and Judy Strum who stepped inside the transporter and exited with their heads on the body of pigeons. Their intention was to uncover the obstacles racing pigeons encountered, resulting in the loss of thousands of birds. Judy, a veterinarian and Bobby, an undercover detective, as Avian hybrids, raced alongside their beloved pigeons in a grueling and hazardous race; defying challenging obstacles: storms, hunters, predatory falcons, violent competitors and pirates. "While on their journey they unwittingly stumbled upon how pigeons, used in world wars performing many heroic deeds, are now being used to provide contraband to prisoners and used by drug lord as mulls, providing them with millions of dollars in illegal profits. "This is Bob and Judy's story and your future."

Book excerpt: Debut author Annabelle Greene brings us the brilliant first book in her Society of Beasts series, in which a quiet country vicar is unwillingly reunited with the duke who left him long ago… As a young man, Sir Gabriel Winters left behind his status as a gentleman, turning his back on his secret desires and taking a self-imposed vow of celibacy. Now a chaste hard-working vicar, his reputation is beyond reproach. But, try as he might, he’s never forgotten the man he once desired or the pain of being abandoned by his first love. Edward Stanhope, the Duke of Caddonfell, is a notorious rake, delighting in scandal no matter the consequence. With a price on his head, he flees to the countryside, forced to keep his presence a secret or risk assassination. When Edward finds Gabriel on his estate, burning with fever, he cannot leave him to die, but taking him in puts them both in jeopardy. With the help of a notorious blackmailer, a society of rich and famous gentlemen who prefer gentlemen, and a kitten named Buttons, they might just manage to save Edward’s life—but the greatest threat may be to their hearts. Download or read book Great Spanish Films Since 1950 written by Ronald Schwartz and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-09-05 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it began, modern Spanish cinema was under strict censorship, forced to conform to the ideological demands of the Nationalist regime. In 1950, the New Spanish Cinema was born as a protest over General Francisco Franco's policies: a new series of directors and films began to move away from the conformist line to offer a bold brand of Spanish realism. In the 1950s and early 1960s, filmmakers such as Juan Antonio Bardem, Luis García Berlanga, and Luis Buñuel expressed a liberal image of Spain to the world in such films as Muerte de un ciclista (Death of a Cyclist), Bienvenido Señor Marshall (Welcome Mr. Marshall), and Viridiana. The emergence of new directors continued into the sixties and seventies with Carlos Saura, José Luis Borau, Víctor Erice, and others. After Franco's death in 1975, censorship was abolished and films openly explored such formerly taboo subjects as sexuality, drugs, the church, the army, and the Civil War. The Spanish cinema was no longer escapist and entertaining but, at long last, mirrored the society it depicted. While established directors like Saura, Bardem, and Berlanga continued to produce distinguished work, the "new wave" of Spanish cinema included brilliant films by the likes of Montxo Armendáriz (Tasio), Fernando Trueba (First Work), Imanol Uribe (The Death of Mikel), and Pedro Almodóvar (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). In the last couple of decades, exciting works by established filmmakers and newcomers alike continue to be produced, including Alejandro Amenábar's Thesis, José Luis Garcí's The Grandfather, and Almodóvar's Talk to Her and Volver. In Great Spanish Films Since 1950, Ronald Schwartz presents a compendium of outstanding Spanish films from the pre-Francoist era through the Spanish New Wave of the 80's and 90's and into the present day. Schwartz provides background, plot, and commentaries of key films from six decades of Spanish cinema. In addition to identifying

Download or read book Queer European Cinema written by Leanne Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer European Cinema commences with an overview of LGBTQ representation throughout cinematic history, interwoven with socio-political reality in Europe and beyond, to consider trends including the boarding school film, the gay road movie, and queer horror such as the lesbian vampire tale, before analysing case studies from the ‘low culture’ of pornography to the ‘high culture’ of arthouse cinema. This collection of essays explores borders and boundaries of geography, temporality, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, and desire in a range of European films at a time when both LGBTQ politics and the concept of Europe are under intense scrutiny in representation and reality, to demonstrate how LGBTQ film can serve as a political tool to create visibility and acceptance as well as providing entertainment. Chapters include an analysis of both trans and femme identities in Academy Award-winning Boys Don’t Cry alongside German film, Unveiled; the intersection of lesbian visibility and the notion of nation on the Croatian screen at its point of entry into the European Union and during the gay marriage referendum; music and its relation to camp in Italian transnational cinema; European lesbian feminist pornography; and an analysis of liminal spaces and citizenship in queer French-language road movies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Studies in European Cinema.
