Book Alive and Kicking at All Ages

Download or read book Alive and Kicking at All Ages written by Ulla Kriebernegg and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linking of age and ill-health is part of a cultural narrative of decline as age is often defined as the absence of good health. Research has shown that we are aged by culture, but we are also culturally made ill when we age. The cultural ambiguity of aging can thus deconstruct negative images of old age as physical decrepitude. This volume investigates the topic of health within the matrix of time and experience by addressing issues such as how our understanding of health influences our notion of agency within a subversive deconstruction of normative age concepts, and what role the notion of health plays in such an interaction.

Book Mrs Golightly and Other Stories

Download or read book Mrs Golightly and Other Stories written by Ethel Wilson and published by New Canadian Library. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteen pieces collected in Mrs. Golightly and Other Stories bring together the many and subtle voices of Ethel Wilson, demonstrating her extraordinary range as a writer. From the gentle mockery of the title story to the absurdist reportage of “Mr. Sleepwalker,” Wilson exerts unerring narrative control. Revealing what is “simple and complicated and timeless” in everyday life, these stories also venture into irrational realms of experience where chance encounters assume a malevolent form and coincidence transmuted into nightmare. First published in 1961, Mrs. Golightly and Other Stories is a diverse and rewarding collection, unified by Ethel Wilson’s distinct and engaging wit.

Book Gothic Traditions and Narrative Techniques in the Fiction of Eudora Welty

Download or read book Gothic Traditions and Narrative Techniques in the Fiction of Eudora Welty written by Ruth D. Weston and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Ruth D. Weston probes the whole of Eudora Welty’s work to reveal the writer’s close relationship to the gothic tradition. Specifically, Weston shows how Welty employs the theme of enclosure and escape and settings that convey a sense of mystery—gothic adaptations both—to create certain narrative techniques in her fiction. Differentiating at the outset between the Gothic genre as opposed to elements of the gothic tradition, and acknowledging both critics’ and Welty’s own reluctance to link her writing with the former, Weston plunges in and brilliantly discloses the relationship Welty’s writing has to both, and in doing so describes a rich literary heritage to which Welty belongs. She shows how the tradition of adapting European Gothic conventions to American settings has come down to us through writers such as Hawthorne, particularly through the short story, and continues in Welty’s fiction. Among Welty’s narrative techniques that Weston discusses are plot structures built around betrayal and captivity, reversal of characters’ gender roles, a tone sometimes similar to that of gothic genres such as the fairy tale or ghost story, and affective settings in “gothic spaces” such as the woods along the Natchez Trace. These techniques, Weston explains, help Welty in illustrating restrictions placed on the individual’s search for selfhood by human relationships, cultural expectations, and memory. In addition to examining the texts themselves, Weston draws on Welty’s critical and theoretical writings and her letters and other materials in archival collections. She also gleans insights from the work of contemporary narrative theorists, feminist critics, and recent commentators on the Gothic. In the course of her presentation, she offers some excellent new assessments of Welty’s relation to the “female Gothic” and the “Southern Gothic” and to William Faulkner and Jane Austen. This book is one of the most informed studies to date of Welty’s relation to the literary mainstream of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Welty scholars as well as general readers of American and southern literature will gain a deep appreciation for Welty’s imaginative and original response to the Gothic literary tradition.

These eight stories reveal the singular imaginative power of one of America's most admired writers. Set in the region of the Old Natchez Trace along the lower Mississippi, the stories dip in and out of history and range from virgin wilderness to a bar in New Orleans. In “First Love,” set in 1807, a deaf and orphaned boot-boy has a remarkable encounter with a man accused of treason, Aaron Burr. “Asphodel” ingeniously recreates a classic legend in the Old South. And the title story captures a moment in time for a pregnant woman and her young husband who has stayed out all night. In each story, Miss Welty sustains the high level of performance that, throughout her distinguished career, has won her numerous literary awards. "Miss Welty runs a photofinish with the finest prose artists of her time." —Time
