Book The gestating and lactating sow

Download or read book The gestating and lactating sow written by Chantal Farmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last book on the lactating sow was published over 15 years ago. This new book brings us up to date in current knowledge on the gestating and lactating sow. It covers new and important topics such as conditioning of gilts for optimal reproductive performance, feeding high fibre diets to gestating sows and providing various fat sources in gestation and lactation. It also describes the several key success factors to group-housing systems in gestation, which is a must due to the current move towards group-housing. The new concept of transition feeding for sows is discussed, as well as the factors involved in mammary development of gilts and sows, both of which are instrumental for maximum colostrum and/or milk yields. The impact of the human-animal interactions on sow welfare and performance is discussed with focus on new handling practices that could be developed to overbalance the negative interactions inherent to pig management systems. Updates on must-have topics, such as amino acid and energy requirements of sows, colostrum and milk yield and composition, and sow health are also provided. The subjects covered in this book will assist animal scientists, nutritionists, veterinarians and swine producers in learning the most recent information on relevant and current topics affecting sow production, and in knowing which areas are in need of further research efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide information to allow the development of appropriate feeding strategies for sows and boars. In addition to basic scientific knowledge, practical guidelines and indices of reproduction are given, commensurate with good performance, health and welfare. This comprehensive work will be an invaluable source of reference for students, research scientists, veterinarians and all those engaged in practical pig production. The central role of nutrition in the reproduction of farm animals has long been recognised. In the last two decades there have been considerable advances in our knowledge of sow and boar nutrition which has allowed the development of effective feeding strategies. Such progress will continue in order to meet the demands of ever-increasing product targets. Book Protein Metabolism in the Lactating Sow

Download or read book Protein Metabolism in the Lactating Sow written by Nathalie Trottier and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of experiments were conducted to examine factors affecting feed intake and protein metabolism in the lactating sow. The primiparous sow exhibits poor appetite during the initial phase of lactation in relation to her requirements for production. The early phase of lactation is associated with a high plasma tryptophan to branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) ratio. High plasma tryptophan to the branched chain amino acids is associated with increased tryptophan entry in the brain and serotonin secretion which in turn is involved in the depression of feed intake in other species. The effect of decreasing the ratio of tryptophan to the BCAA in the sow did not increase feed intake, but rather decreased it. The leaner genotype sows tended to respond to an increased dietary BCAA by minimizing body weight loss during lactation. Body composition during pregnancy was also examined as a factor affecting protein metabolism and feed intake during lactation. Body weight change, feed intake and protein degradation rates were affected by the gestation body weight gain. Gilts fed at a high energy level during pregnancy, 36% above recommended levels from NRC (1988), exhibited a reduced insulin response to feed intake during mid-gestation. During lactation, these gilts also demonstrated a low post-absorptive insulin concentration, insulin to glucagon molar ratio, and a high post-absorptive glucagon concentration. These factors were associated with a decreased feed intake throughout lactation, and an increased protein breakdown rate as measured by plasma three-methylhistidine kinetics. Another experiment confirmed that high-energy-fed gilts during gestation demonstrated a decreased responsiveness to insulin and a reduced tolerance to glucose prior to parturition, further confirming the altered protein metabolic activity in response to excess energy intake during pregnancy. A novel approach to quantify daily amino acids uptake by the lactating mammary gland was examined. A technique to cannulate the anterior venous system of the mammary gland was developed and daily amino acid extraction rates and uptakes were measured and estimated, respectively. Extraction rate for the first limiting amino acid, lysine, increased with advancing lactation. Valine was shown to be extracted at low rates due to its high arterial concentration. New amino acid requirement estimates are proposed, based on the mammary uptake approach.

Each chapter is written by international authorities who understand both the science and application of their topic area. The book provides detailed insight into the many factors affecting feed efficiency, ranging from diet processing to herd health, from nutrition to physiology and from day-to-day barn management to the adoption of advanced technologies. The authors explain such practical aspects as the challenge of interpreting feed efficiency information obtained on farm or the role of liquid feeding. The authors also delve into more scientific topics such as amino acid or energy metabolism or animal physiology. This book is written for people who have a technical interest in pork production, including nutritionists, geneticists, farm management specialists, veterinarians, other academics and, of course, pork producers.

Book Climate Change Impact on Livestock Adaptation and Mitigation

Download or read book Climate Change Impact on Livestock Adaptation and Mitigation written by Veerasamy Sejian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses in detail both livestock’s role in climate change and the impacts of climate change on livestock production and reproduction. Apart from these cardinal principles of climate change and livestock production, this volume also examines the various strategies used to mitigate livestock-related GHG emissions, and those which can reduce the impacts of climate change on livestock production and reproduction. Presenting information and case studies collected and analyzed by professionals working in diversified ecological zones, the book explores the influence of climate change on livestock production across the globe. The most significant feature of this book is that it addresses in detail the different adaptation strategies and identifies targets for different stakeholders in connection with climate change and livestock production. Further, it puts forward development plans that will allow the livestock industries to cope with current climate changes and strategies that will mitigate the effects by 2025. Lastly, it provides researchers and policymakers several researchable priorities to help develop economically viable solutions for livestock production with less GHG emissions, promoting a cleaner environment in which human beings and livestock can live in harmony without adverse effects on productivity. Given that livestock production systems are sensitive to climate change and at the same are themselves a contributor to the phenomenon, climate change has the potential to pose an increasingly formidable challenge to the development of the livestock sector. However, there is a dearth of scientific information on adapting livestock production to the changing climate; as such, well-founded reference material on sustaining livestock production systems under the changing climate scenarios in different agro-ecological zones of the world is essential. By methodically and extensively addressing all aspects of climate change and livestock production, this volume offers a valuable tool for understanding the hidden intricacies of climatic stress and its influence on livestock production.
