Book excerpt: This intensive, full-coverage survey was conducted by the Universities of Nottingham and Amsterdam in conjunction with the British School at Athens between 1983 and 1988. It covered a territory of just over 70 sq km in central Laconia, extending from the east side of the River Evrotas, close to Sparta, up into the foothills of the Parnon range. The Survey identified over 400 sites, the great majority of them previously unknown, dating variously to the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Veneto-Turkish periods. The new information makes possible a re-evaluation of the settlement history and rural economy of Sparta and Laconia. This is presented in Volume I, in which the ecology and geomorphology of the region set the scene for period by period analyses of the results and implications of the Survey. Volume II assembles the primary data, including a pottery series for each period and separate studies of chipped and ground-stone artefacts, inscriptions, architectural fragments, other finds, and the results of geophysical survey. The site catalogue is complemented by a new gazetteer of archaeological sites in the rest of Laconia. Vol II - Archaeological Data.

Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years many hundreds of small rural sites have been identified in Greece (and throughout the Mediterranean) through intensive field survey. Their exact nature and function is still a matter of hot contention. This volume reviews the current theories on the variety and character of rural sites, land tenure and residence in Prehistoric, Classical, Roman and Byzantine Greece. The innovative methodology adopted for this project is outlined against the background of intensive site survey, the impact of post-depositional effects, geophysical prospection in the Mediterranean and archaeological soils analysis. The core of the volume is an analysis of 20 sites, which range in date from the Early Bronze Age to Byzantine periods, selected from the >400 located by the Laconia Survey (Supplementary Volume 26-27). The concluding section then reviews the advantages and disadvantages of the methodology applied and draws broader conclusions about rural settlement, land use and site function from the prehistoric period onwards.

Book excerpt: This is the first ever documented study of the 1,035 identifiable Greek city states (poleis) of the Archaic and Classical periods (c.650-325 BC). Previous studies of the Greek polis have focused on Athens and Sparta, and the result has been a view of Greek society dominated by Sophokles', Plato's, and Demosthenes' view of what the polis was. This study includes descriptions of Athens and Sparta, but its main purpose is to explore the history andorganization of the thousand other city states.The main part of the book is a regionally organized inventory of all identifiable poleis covering the Greek world from Spain to the Caucasus and from the Crimea to Libya. This inventory is the work of 47 specialists, and is divided into 46 chapters, each covering a region. Each chapter contains an account of the region, a list of second-order settlements, and an alphabetically ordered description of the poleis. This description covers such topics as polis status,territory, settlement pattern, urban centre, city walls and monumental architecture, population, military strength, constitution, alliance membership, colonization, coinage, and Panhellenic victors.The first part of the book is a description of the method and principles applied in the construction of the inventory and an analysis of some of the results to be obtained by a comparative study of the 1,035 poleis included in it. The ancient Greek concept of polis is distinguished from the modern term `city state', which historians use to cover many other historic civilizations, from ancient Sumeria to the West African cultures absorbed by the nineteenth-century colonializingpowers. The focus of this project is what the Greeks themselves considered a polis to be.

Neolithic community was transformed, in some places incrementally and in others rapidly, during the 5th and 4th millennia BC into one that we would commonly associate with the Bronze Age. Many different names have been assigned to this period: Final Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Eneolithic, Late Neolithic [I]-II, Copper Age which, to some extent, reflects the diversity of archaeological evidence from varied geographical regions. During this long heterogeneous period developments occurred that led to significant changes in material culture, the use of space, the adoption of metallurgical practices, establishment of far-reaching interaction and exchange networks, and increased social complexity. The 5th to 4th millennium BC transition is one of inclusions, entanglements, connectivity, and exchange of ideas, raw materials, finished products and, quite possibly, worldviews and belief systems. Most of the papers presented here are multifaceted and complex in that they do not deal with only one topic or narrowly focus on a single line of reasoning or dataset. Arranged geographically they explore a series of key themes: Chronology, cultural affinities, and synchronization in material culture; changing social structure and economy; inter- and intra-site space use and settlement patterns, caves and include both site reports and regional studies.
