Book excerpt: Published in 1997, this book is an examination of the Irish experience with active labour market policy. This text looks at training in comparison with employment programmes and examines this in the context of strong and weak market orientation. The study is based on a survey which is used to analyze the effect of programme participation on short and long-term employment prospects and on income. The results show that market-orientation is a significant factor in employment scheme success, a factor that has not been taken into account in recent policy changes. The book also points out the applications of this sort of study in other European countries.

Download or read book Women Work and the Family in Europe written by Eileen Drew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are just some of the questions this controverisal book asks in its analysis of the European labour markets. By bringing together contributions from all over Europe, Women, Work and the Family in Europe outlines the similarities and differences between countries in terms of the problems of reconciling work and family. In doing so it questions the division of labour, not just in the labour market but also in the home, reviewing, for example, fatherhood and the effect of work commitments on men's time spent with their families. Contributions range from a study of family policies to the care of the elderly; from home working to gender roles, motherhood and class. Clearly written, systematic and comprehensive, this book reflects the growing interest in the European context and will appeal to students of social policy and European studies as well as all those involved in women's studies and sociology. Ruth Emerek, University of Aalborg, Denmark, Susan Mc Rae, Oxford Brookes University, Yvonne Hirdman, Sweden, Eileen Drew and Evelyn Mahon, both at Trinity College,

Book Unemployment in Ireland

Download or read book Unemployment in Ireland written by Charles Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998, this book looks at unemployment in Ireland, the country's most serious social and economic problem. It is the major contributor to poverty, exclusion and social decay. This book contributes to the growing debate on the unemployment problem in Ireland. It is the first academic collection of papers on this issue and contains contributions from some of Ireland's most respected economists. It offers alternative views of the Irish labour market, with these views shedding light on many aspects of the unemployment problem, including exchange rates influences, aggregate demand analysis, labour market policies and the historical perspective. Since this book assesses the problem of unemployment from different perspectives, it should widen the discussion of this most serious issue.

Book Employment Revival in Europe

Download or read book Employment Revival in Europe written by Peter Auer and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2000 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study reviews the remarkable economic and labor market recovery made by four small European countries: Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands. It analyzes their success and highlights the specific factors responsible, in particular the promotion of social dialogue and the institution of critical macroeconomic and labor market policies. While assessing the progress and examining the remaining problems in these four countries, the book compares their progress with that of other European Union countries and examines how similar policies and action could help combat unemployment and make progress towards full employment. The study presents a detailed comparative analysis of the labor markets of the four countries. It analyzes employment and unemployment developments in detail, covering gender gaps, the sectoral distribution of employment, and the shares of people which are dependent on social transfers. It shows the employment intensity of economic growth and gives readers a substantial, broad overview of the economic and labor market situation in each country. Finally, the book makes relevant policy recommendations for promoting further growth and social progress in these countries, as well as others across Europe.
