Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colorado Mine War Once, upon certain tendencies Which are growing not only in the western portions of the land, but in every part of the land With increasing force and power. The laboring hosts of the United States are no longer a downtrodden fraction, helpless in'the hands of capitalists. The notion that the laboring millions are any longer in fear of their'employers, or that they are to be considered in any other manner than a thoroughly well organized group oi combatants perfectly capable and perfectly equipped to meet on fair terms their antagonists, is a superstition. The labor question has ceased to be one in Which sympathy for the laboring masses should play any part whatever. The history of the dynamit ing outrages shows that. But it is even more clearly shown by the vast sums Which are now at the command of the lead ers in any labor struggle. In Colorado, the present contest must be costing the labor side many thousands of dollars, grunning possibly in the hundreds of thousands. Without i these funds this strike and its attendant results could not possibly have been brought about. These funds come from every part of the land. They come by as real a tax upon millions of men as any tax ever laid. These funds are be yond Ipublic scrutiny, and are accounted for to nobody who has the public interest at stake. Download or read book A History Greeley and the Union Colony of Colorado Classic Reprint written by David Boyd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History, Greeley and the Union Colony of Colorado The present time appeared to me a favorable One for this work as many of the old landmarks are disappearing, and the data I found were beginning to be difficult to procure. The files of The Tribune were incomplete, nearly the whole of the first year being missing, while The Sun has no files previous to 1885. The deficiency above pointed out, is made good to a certain extent by the care of H. T. West who has collected in a Scrap Book a large number of news paper articles relating to the colony during the first three years. Mr. West has been kind enough to put this in my hands together with other valuable documents, some of which will be printed in full in the appendix. Book The Labor History of the Cripple Creek District

Download or read book The Labor History of the Cripple Creek District written by Benjamin McKie Rastall and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Labor History of the Cripple Creek District: A Study in Industrial Evolution The Labor History of Cripple Creek is the result of investigations carried out upon the ground, and covering a period of several years. The material for the narrative of the strike of 1894 was secured in 1902 and early in 1903, shortly before the opening of the second strike. This was fortunate in that, a considerable period having elapsed and the most friendly conditions prevailing, the second strike being no more than a faint suggestion upon the horizon, the men concerned could be induced to speak more frankly and with less conscious 1 partisanship than would have been possible at any other time. It also gave the author knowledge of the exact situation and conditions under which the second strike had its formation, and enabled him to follow the course of events with more accuracy than would have been possible under any other circumstances. During the strike of 1903-04 the author was a resident of Colorado, part of the time of Colorado Springs, and the summer season of 1905 was spent in Teller County, largely in completing the investigations for this monograph. The most important material for the work has been gained through interviews, over 300 in number, with men in a position to have an intimate knowledge of various 1 phases of the difficulties. Information has been sought from most of the union officers and many prominent union men; from nearly all the county and state officers in any way directly concerned; and from many others who from close personal experience could speak with authority of various incidents of the strike. It was originally intended to publish a list of the interviews with the bibliography, and to make free use of them in footnotes showing authority. Owing, however, to the recentness and intensity of the last strike, the resulting tension is in some cases strong. Download or read book Killing for Coal written by Thomas G. Andrews and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a spring morning in 1914, in the stark foothills of southern Colorado, members of the United Mine Workers of America clashed with guards employed by the Rockefeller family, and a state militia beholden to Colorado’s industrial barons. When the dust settled, nineteen men, women, and children among the miners’ families lay dead. The strikers had killed at least thirty men, destroyed six mines, and laid waste to two company towns. Killing for Coal offers a bold and original perspective on the 1914 Ludlow Massacre and the “Great Coalfield War.” In a sweeping story of transformation that begins in the coal beds and culminates with the deadliest strike in American history, Thomas Andrews illuminates the causes and consequences of the militancy that erupted in colliers’ strikes over the course of nearly half a century. He reveals a complex world shaped by the connected forces of land, labor, corporate industrialization, and workers’ resistance. Brilliantly conceived and written, this book takes the organic world as its starting point. The resulting elucidation of the coalfield wars goes far beyond traditional labor history. Considering issues of social and environmental justice in the context of an economy dependent on fossil fuel, Andrews makes a powerful case for rethinking the relationships that unite and divide workers, consumers, capitalists, and the natural world.
