Book Labor Economics Problems in Analyzing Labor Markets

Download or read book Labor Economics Problems in Analyzing Labor Markets written by William A. Darity, Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Darity, Jr. In 1984 the Kluwer series in Modern Economic Thought, under the editorial direction of Warren Samuels, brought out a book under my editorship entitled Labor Economics: Modern Views. It consisted of a series of essays and commentaries that sought, in a critical fashion, to assess the state of the art in the field of labor economics with respect to several themes. These included methodology versus practice, the analysis of discrimination by gender and race, the phenomenon of persistent racial differences in un employment exposure, occupational safety and health regulation, dual versus segmented labor markets, and the remnants of the Phillips curve trade-off between unemployment and inflation. Nearly a decade later I was approached by Warren Samuels and Kluwer about editing a new book that would again address where things stand in labor economics. In proceeding with the development of this current book I was a struck by the extent to which the research thrust that was apparent in the early 1980s remains intact as we move toward the 21st century. The vast majority of scholarship in the labor subfield is dominated by the methodological orientation of applied neoclassical microeconomics, supplemented by incursions from the themes that occupy the so-called "pure theorists," particularly of the game theoretic variety.

Book Analyzing the Labor Force

Download or read book Analyzing the Labor Force written by Clifford C. Clogg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the passing of Clifford Collier Clogg at the age of 45 on May 7th 1995, the world lost a talented sociologist, demographer, and statistician all at once. In addition to being a considerable talent in each of these three disciplines, and perhaps more importantly, Cliff was the type of person who brought to gether diverse elements and scholars from all three. Cliff was also a consum mate mentor, nurturing ideas and students and always striving to bring out the best in both. Perhaps nothing illustrates the stature, impact, and respect others held for Cliff more than the fact that never before-and never since has an individual been honored at the time of his death with ceremonies from the national associations of all three of these disciplines. The purpose of this book is to introduce to a broad constituency of social scientists and their students some of the basic ideas in the study of the labor force that Cliff and his colleagues had grappled with. At the time of Cliff's death, he was perhaps better known for his methodological contributions to sociology and demography than he was for his substantive contributions to the study of social stratification and the labor force. Our goal is to highlight Cliff's substantive contributions to sociology and demography by telling the cumulative story of his research and adding updated analysis that advances the story beyond the early 1980s to the mid-1990s.

Book Labor Problems and Labor Administration in the United States During the World War

This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor Problems and Labor Administration in the United States During the World War: Part I. Nature and Analysis of the Problem The principal aim of this study is to present statistical and other informational data concerning the numerous labor prob lems that arose in the United States during the recent war, and to outline the development of war labor administration. The data were gathered during the war period and the study was completed shortly after the cessation of hostilities. No pretense is made to discuss the developments that have taken place In the period of reconstruction, except where it has seemed necessary to add data to round out certain phases of the presentation. The conclusions in the final chapter were formulated in the light of the war experiences of the United States and, altho the months subsequent to the signing of the armistice have uncovered devel opments that may seem to invalidate some of the conclusions regarding the future relations of cap ital and labor, the author is still of the opinion that his analysis has adequate basis in fact and that future developments will sustain his conclusions. This opportunity is taken to express the writer 's appreciation of the very valuable criticisms and suggestions made by Pro feasor John A. Fairlie of the University of Illinois, who has read the manuscript. The author is especially indebted to his wife, Anna E. Watkins, whose constant cooperation has made this study possible.
