Book excerpt: The Kumarasambhava of Kalidasa varies from the loveliness of spring and the delights of married love to the utter desolation induced by the death of beloved. The subject is unquestionably a daring one: the events which bring about the marriage of Lord Siva to Uma and the birth of Skanda. The prose order of each sloka has been given in the commentary by using bold type, the words not actually repeated by Mallinatha being enclosed within rectangular brackets. The notes explain allusions, grammatical peculiarities not noticed by Mallinatha, copious extracts from other commentaries being given for this purpose. Book Kumarasambhavam

Download or read book Kumarasambhavam written by Kalidasa and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kumarasambhavam celebrates the love story of Siva and Parvati, whose passionate union results in the birth of their son, the young god Kumara. Beginning with a luminous description of the birth of Parvati, the poem proceeds in perfectly pitched sensuous detail through her courtship with Siva until the night of their wedding. It plays out their tale on the immense scale of supreme divinity, wherein the gods are viewed both as lovers and as cosmic principles. Composed in eight scintillating cantos, Kumarasambhavam continues to enchant readers centuries after it was first written. Hank Heifetz's sparkling translation brings to life the heady eroticism and sumptuous imagery of the original.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language whose phonology is described in this work is standard Hindi, i.e., the Hindi used in everyday casual speech by educated native speakers in cities such as Varanasi, Lucknow, Delhi etc., which is different from highly Sanskritized Hindi called literary style Hindi and highly Preso-Arabicized Urdu, a native speaker being one who has learnt the language as his first language. The author`s interest lies in accounting for the Hindi speakers` competence i.e., providing evidence for the psychological reality of certain sound patterns of Hindi. This study is a mixture of two types of evidence. Some evidence is provided from experimental data and other is from hypercorrection, from children`s mistakes, from native speakers` reactions to certain forms. the model used is that of generative phonology with modifications suggested throughout.

Book Classical Sanskrit Tragedy

Download or read book Classical Sanskrit Tragedy written by Bihani Sarkar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that classical Sanskrit poetry and drama lack a concern with the tragic. However, as Bihani Sarkar makes clear in this book, this is far from the case. In the first study of tragedy in classical Sanskrit literature, Sarkar draws on a wide range of Sanskrit dramas, poems and treatises – much of them translated for the first time into English – to provide a complete history of the tragic in Indian literature from the second to the fourth centuries. Looking at Kalidasa, the most celebrated writer of Sanskrit poetry and drama (kavya), this book argues that constructions of absence and grief are central to Kalidasa's compositions and that these 'tragic middles' are much more sophisticated than previously understood. For Kalidasa, tragic middles are modes of thinking, in which he confronts theological and philosophical issues. Through a close literary analysis of the tragic middle in five of his works, the Abhijñanasakuntala, the Raghuva?sa, the Kumarasambhava, the Vikramorvasiya and the Meghaduta, Sarkar demonstrates the importance of tragedy for classical Indian poetry and drama in the early centuries of the common era. These depictions from the Indian literary sphere, by their particular function and interest in the phenomenology of grief, challenge and reshape in a wholly new way our received understanding of tragedy.

Book The Origin of the Young God

Download or read book The Origin of the Young God written by Kālidāsa and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kumarasambhava of Kalidasa probably composed about A.D. 400, is the greatest long poem in classical sanskrit. It is the love story of Siva and Parvati the God and the Goddess, who are viewed as lovers and as cosmic principles. The poem of their love is a paradigm of the inevitable union between male and female played out on the immense scale of supreme divinity. Beginning with a description of Himalaya and the birth of his daughter Parvati the poem proceeds in perfectly pitched sensuous detail through a presentation of the broader setting for the divine relationship ( a warrior child is needed to lead the army of the gods), the uneasy course of events between Siva and Parvati.
