The 21 themes addressed by the conference fell into four broad categories; Threats to Survival and Sustainability; Technological Advances towards Survival and Sustainability; Activities and Tools for Social Change; Defining Goals for Sustainable Societies. Activities and tools that move the society towards greater sustainability were emphasized at the conference. These included environmental law and ethics, environmental knowledge, technology and information systems, media, environmental awareness, education and lifelong learning, the use of literature for environmental awareness, the green factor in politics, international relations and environmental organizations. The breadth of the issues addressed at the conference made clear the need for greatly increased interdisciplinary and international collaboration the survival and sustainability concept. The exchanges at the conference represent a step in this direction.

This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last quarter of the twentieth century diffuse pollution emerged as a major problem worldwide. In developed countries it was frequently found that after massive spending on abatement of point source pollution, receiving water bodies had not improved, while in developing countries, as a result of population growth and migration, urbanization with inadequate sanitation, land use changes, deforestation, and other factors added to untreated point-source pollution to place unprecedented burdens on the natural ecosystems and on water resources. Newer more holistic strategies are being developed, incorporating innovative technologies, economic and regulatory tools, basin-wide planning, and citizens? initiatives. From a very large programme with a genuinely global perspective, 41 papers have been selected for these proceedings. They fall under the following topics: nutrient pollution from agricultural systems; solutions to nutrient and sediment pollution from agriculture; agricultural pesticide pollution; modelling technology for agricultural pollution management; lake loading and eutrophication; water quality monitoring; economic, social and policy issues; urban pollution and solutions; and integrated modelling technology.

Book Environmental Challenges for the Next Millennium

Download or read book Environmental Challenges for the Next Millennium written by A. Adin and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental problems know no boundaries and their solutions may well therefore require collaboration on a local, regional national and/or international scale; similarly they are no respecters of disciplinary boundaries. Tackling the real issues by overcoming physical and institutional boundaries has been a key aspect of the conferences of the Israel Society for Ecology and Environmental Quality Science: over a quarter of a century they have earned a reputation for combining state of the art science with practical discussion of global and regional environmental issues. The impact of the peace process on the potential for regional cooperation in the Middle East added particular significance to the 7th ISEEQS conference. Among the 69 papers specially selected for these proceedings are contributions from distinguished international experts and leading figures from the region. Subjects covered include: treatment of drinking water, and municipal and industrial wastewater, including reclamation and reuse studies; water resources management, including legal and institutional aspects; and pollution impacts and environmental management of marine, coastal lake and river, and groundwater ecosystems, including remediation of contamination.
