Book excerpt: The Favor of Friends offers the first book-length exploration of intercession—aid and advocacy by one individual or group in behalf of another—within early medieval aristocratic societies. Drawing upon a variety of disciplines and historiographical traditions, Sean Gilsdorf demonstrates how this process operated, and how it was ideologically elaborated, in Carolingian and Ottonian Europe, allowing individuals and groups to leverage their own, limited interpersonal networks to the fullest, produce new relationships, gain access to previously closed spaces, and generate interest in their agendas from those able to effect change. The Favor of Friends enriches our understanding of early medieval politics and rulership, offering a model of political interaction in which hierarchy and comity do not stand in ideological and pragmatic tension, but instead work in integrated and mutually-reinforcing ways.

Book Three Bernards Sent South to Govern

Download or read book Three Bernards Sent South to Govern written by Donald C. Jackman and published by Editions Enlaplage. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A presentation of the fundamental constitution that preceded dynastic feudalism, with source materials pertaining to ninth-century France, and a consideration of the methods best suited for achieving significant insight, in particular in the reconstruction of aristocratic genealogical relationships. This study finds that the essential office of count invariably was inherited, ideally according to proximity and primogeniture, with the king and the aristocracy acting as a corporation to admit specific and well-understood variations to basic hereditary principles in a sophisticated juristic environment.

Book The Making of Medieval Central Europe

Download or read book The Making of Medieval Central Europe written by Martin Wihoda and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-26 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the distant origins of medieval Central Europe have enjoyed constant interest among historians, only marginal attention has been paid to the power and political prerequisites for the first Westernization, i.e. the gradual adoption of the values, norms and patterns of behavior of the Latin West by the communities (gentes) around the eastern edge of the Carolingian and subsequently Holy Roman Empires. Such a gap in knowledge, long overlooked, is now being filled by The Making of Medieval Central Europe: Power and Political Prerequisites for the First Westernization, 791-1122. While respecting the state of research and based on an original analysis of the sources, this book offers an informed reflection of a complex dialogue that was initiated after the collapse of the Avar Khaganate at the end of the 8th century and that, by the beginning of the 12th century, gave rise to a Central Europe that was Westernized (i.e. turned toward the West) yet in many ways distinctive. Another and no less important added value of this book is the author's conscious effort to overcome the narrow interpretive matrices defined by the national interests of the time.

Book Agnes through the Looking Glass Parts I II III

Download or read book Agnes through the Looking Glass Parts I II III written by Donald C. Jackman and published by Editions Enlaplage. This book was released on 2019-08-11 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of dynamic categories of Greco-Roman personal names is presented primarily in reference to France. Part I introduces the Frankish system of Germanic names and illustrates composite derivation through the examples of Mauger and Mathilde in the Norman ducal family. Part II describes the various Greco-Roman sub-catgories that formed before the onset of dynamic categories, with particular attention to traditions in the high aristocracy. Part III is devoted to the rise of the “oblique” category of Greco-Roman names, the smaller of the two dynamic categories. The “oblique” category includes the male names Peter, Thomas and Nicholas, and a host of female names, including Agnes and Sibylle and attributives such as Yolande and Clementia.

Book Eleanor of Aquitaine

    Book Details:
  • Author : B. Wheeler
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-04-30
  • ISBN : 1137052627
  • Pages : 520 pages

Download or read book Eleanor of Aquitaine written by B. Wheeler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleanor's patrilineal descent, from a lineage already prestigious enough to have produced an empress in the eleventh century, gave her the lordship of Aquitaine. But marriage re-emphasized her sex which, in the medieval scheme of gender-power relations relegated her to the position of Lady in relation to her Lordly husbands. In this collection, essays provide a context for Eleanor's life and further an evolving understanding of Eleanor's multifaceted career. A valuable collection on the greatest heiress of the medieval period.

Book Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists who Came to America Before 1700

Download or read book Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists who Came to America Before 1700 written by Frederick Lewis Weis and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2004 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the eighth edition of the classic work on the royal ancestry of certain colonists who came to America before the year 1700, and it is the first new edition to appear since 1992, reflecting the change in editorship from the late Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr. to his appointed successors William and Kaleen Beall. Like the previous editions, it embodies the very latest research in the highly specialized field of royal genealogy. As a result, out of a total of 398 ancestral lines, 91 have been extensively revised and 60 have been added, while almost all lines have had at least some minor corrections, amounting altogether to a 30 percent increase in text. Previous discoveries have now been integrated into the text and recently discovered errors have been corrected. And for the first time, thanks to the efforts of the new editors, this edition contains an every-name index, replacing the cumbersome indexes of the past. In addition to Alfred the Great, Charlemagne, Malcolm of Scotland, and Robert the Strong, descents in this work are traced from the following ancestral lines: Saxon and English monarchs, Gallic monarchs, early kings of Scotland and Ireland, kings and princes of Wales, Gallo-Romans and Alsatians, Norman and French barons, the Riparian branch of the Merovingian House, Merovingian kings of France, Isabel de Vermandois, and William de Warenne.
