So spake the Master we follow in His great prayer the night before He died on the Cross; and the Church has taken His words into one of her daily collects, speaking of God, "in knowledge of whom" (that is, of course, "in the knowing of whom") "standeth our eternal life"; as well as into the Collect for St. Philip and St. James's Day - "whom truly to know is everlasting life." But men say, 'We cannot know God: we do not deny the existence of God; but we affirm that, if there be a God, He is unknowable.' Now let me at once allow that there is a great truth underlying this agnosticism. There generally is a truth at the root of all error; for error is mostly partial or one-sided truth, erring in its ignoring of other truth. It is true, then, that a finite being like man cannot know, with any complete or commensurate knowledge, an infinite Being like God. The first thing that calls for our attention is the commendation of humility. You will observe, however, that humility is not set forth here as the sole condition of the heavenly estate. It is a condition an indispensable condition; but there is nothing in the Saviour's words limiting the entire range of Christian character to this one quality. We are to humble ourselves as little children; we are to come to that spirit and condition which childhood symbolizes; but having humbled ourselves into that condition, there is more than one quality of true heavenly greatness. And yet, my hearers, if we take this genuine spiritual greatness as the end of our being, how true it is that, in one phase or another, humility and we may say humility alone - does lie at its base, and is its secret fountain. That we may arrive at the conviction of this truth, let us for a few moments con sider what humility is not. In the first place, humility is not a weak and timid quality. It must be carefully distinguished from a groveling spirit. There is such a thing as an honest pride and self respect. We should think something of our humanity, and not cast it under men's feet. Compare here 1 Kings x. 5: the Sitt1ng of his (Solomon's) servants. To be saved by Christ Jesus, to believe in Christ Jesus, is much; but to be in Christ Jesus--what can it mean? Surely it is the expression of the greatest nearness to God of which language is capable! The whole sentence, perhaps, may be paraphrased: Placed in a condition of perfect rest, safety, and enjoyment, so near God as to know Him, not as His far-off subjects may, but as the sons of His house, the members of His family. The man who is in this position and knows it, is a delightful person to meet; he is pleasant in manner, he is not tired or hurried or depressed or murmuring. He is seated at home in his own sphere and enjoying it. Hence, with every want supplied, in touch with all-love and all-wisdom, he is naturally utterly unselfish (no praise to him), and is full of strength and courage to fight the good fight, to finish his course, and to keep the faith the warfare, the walk, the witness of the Christian man (2 Tim. iv. 7). But the secret of it all, the source of his strength and untiring zeal, is found in his being seated together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. No murmur is ever heard here, SSnnursin heavenly no doubts are possible here--no dis-p'aces-cords of earth's purblind reasonings. The eye is opened, and the ears; and, the tongue has learned to speak the language of Heaven, so that it calls bitter, sweet; and pain, joy; and all ill, good, --so it be His sweet will.
