Book The Lunarian Professor and His Remarkable Revelations Concerning the Earth the Moon and Mars

Download or read book The Lunarian Professor and His Remarkable Revelations Concerning the Earth the Moon and Mars written by James Bradun Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On a camping trip in rural Minnesota, the narrator encounters a curious creature, partly humanoid but with wings on his back; smaller wings in the front of his body that function apparently as clothing as well as sensory organs; an extra pair of limbs around his mid-section; a huge head with huge eyes and a vertical mouth. It immediately began to communicate with the camper, seeming to understand the camper's spoken words but addressing him telepathically. He is amiable and professorial in demeanor and proceeds to explain society on the Moon, as well as on Mars, which has been colonized by the Lunarians. The import of the book is clearly utopian, with detailed accounts (including measurements in some cases) about various aspects (economic, agricultural, sociological, biological, technological) of the society"--Robert Eldridge, bookseller

Download or read book Science fiction written by Everett Franklin Bleiler and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementing Science-Fiction: The Early Years, which surveys science-fiction published in book form from its beginnings through 1930, the present volume covers all the science-fiction printed in the genre magazines--Amazing, Astounding, and Wonder, along with offshoots and minor magazines--from 1926 through 1936. This is the first time this historically important literary phenomenon, which stands behind the enormous modern development of science-fiction, has been studied thoroughly and accurately. The heart of the book is a series of descriptions of all 1,835 stories published during this period, plus bibliographic information. Supplementing this are many useful features: detailed histories of each of the magazines, an issue by issue roster of contents, a technical analysis of the art work, brief authors' biographies, poetry and letter indexes, a theme and motif index of approximately 30,0000 entries, and general indexes. Science-Fiction: The Gernsback Years is not only indispensable for reference librarians, collectors, readers, and scholars interested in science-fiction, it is also of importance to the study of popular culture during the Great Depression in the United States. Most of its data, which are largely based on rare and almost unobtainable sources, are not available elsewhere.

The third, who found himself trapped in another world because of the necromancer, is now searching for his people. Book The East Is East and the West Is West Or Is It

Download or read book The East Is East and the West Is West Or Is It written by Gene J Cho and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic, the author shares his deeply personal, honestly critical, and often penetratingly satirical-but always humorous and even delightfully hilarious-narratives from the pages of his early years in Taiwan before the end of World War II and five-decade life in the United States. In refreshing candor, the twenty episodes cover topics of a wide-ranging interest, from anthropological mystery to historical anecdotes, and sociological issues to religious and ethnic characterizations, all from the author's highly personal viewpoint as unique as his complex and multi-faceted background. Some readers may find them inciting to ponder, inducing to laughter, fomenting to indignation or provoking to renunciation, or even moving to tears. But few can remain indifferent to the narratives that come straight from the author's heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Measuring Shadows, Raz Chen-Morris demonstrates that a close study of Kepler’s Optics is essential to understanding his astronomical work and his scientific epistemology. He explores Kepler’s radical break from scientific and epistemological traditions and shows how the seventeenth-century astronomer posited new ways to view scientific truth and knowledge. Chen-Morris reveals how Kepler’s ideas about the formation of images on the retina and the geometrics of the camera obscura, as well as his astronomical observations, advanced the argument that physical reality could only be described through artificially produced shadows, reflections, and refractions. Breaking from medieval and Renaissance traditions that insisted upon direct sensory perception, Kepler advocated for instruments as mediators between the eye and physical reality, and for mathematical language to describe motion. It was only through this kind of knowledge, he argued, that observation could produce certainty about the heavens. Not only was this conception of visibility crucial to advancing the early modern understanding of vision and the retina, but it affected how people during that period approached and understood the world around them.

Book excerpt: The multiple Hugo and Nebula Award–winning Grand Master of Science Fiction delivers “an exciting culmination to an ambitious saga” (Publishers Weekly). Far into the reaches of space, Anson Guthrie and a band of colonists have forged a new existence on Amaterasu not as physical beings but as downloaded consciousness watched over by the benevolent Life Mother. Yet as idyllic as their lives may be, back home on Earth the situation is growing grim. Earth’s inhabitants are now completely dependent—and so controlled—by an intelligent machine known as the Teramind. But the instinctual human desire to be free is not something the Teramind has included in its calculations. The seeds of rebellion are growing. Suspecting a conspiracy to suppress humankind’s last vestiges of freedom, Guthrie and his loyal companions make a dangerous journey back to Earth—risking everything to preserve humanity’s independent destiny. The thrilling conclusion to Anderson’s four-volume, award-winning epic vision of mankind’s evolution, begun in Harvest of Stars, “Fleet of Stars is a grand story that gets bigger and better with every page” (Larry Bond).
