Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us is faced with an impossible problem. Each of us has broken some portion of God’s Law. (That’s called sin.) Unfortunately, this means we are destined to stand before God at the Great White Throne Judgment at the end of time. God’s Law is pure law. It is cold, logical, unemotional, and perfect. It is just. It is righteous. But, as such, it does not offer grace, compassion, forgiveness, or hope. Therefore, each of us will be found guilty and sentenced to the Lake of Fire. That is our eternal fate under God’s Law. God does not want to do this, but His Law forces Him to find us guilty and sentence us to suffer for all eternity. How can God avoid the demands of the Law, fulfill the letter of the Law, keep the Law intact, and still deal with us in love, grace, and compassion? God is able to use a little-known clause in His Law to offer a solution to this problem. It is a plea bargain agreement to satisfy the Law and still save us. To this end, He wrote the Bible, a legally binding contract, to offer an escape.

Book Judging Obscenity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He demonstrates that these communities of experts are divided on such questions as, Can a novel or film be both high art and obscene? and, Is the world of heterosexual pornography categorically different from the worlds of gay and lesbian pornography? He observes that the ideas of an "average" psychological or behavioral response to a story or an image and the "community" standard of decency or tolerance are outmoded myths that elude all attempts at careful measurement. Nowlin concludes that lack of agreement among experts, for example, as to how and why some sexually explicit imagery titillates or pleases some people, while disgusting or demeaning others, can no longer be viewed simply in terms of moral, religious, or even political predilections. Judging Obscenity traces the way freedom of speech and the right to equality have taken shape within the worlds of pornographic expression and consumption and provides a historical glimpse of changing views about literature and art, as well as a critical examination of the nature of social science research in matters of human sexuality, media-response, and sexual expression.

Book excerpt: May Mayko Ebihara (1934–2005) was the first American anthropologist to conduct ethnographic research in Cambodia. Svay provides a remarkably detailed picture of individual villagers and of Khmer social structure and kinship, agriculture, politics, and religion. The world Ebihara described would soon be shattered by Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge. Fifty percent of the villagers perished in the reign of terror, including those who had been Ebihara's adoptive parents and grandparents during her fieldwork. Never before published as a book, Ebihara’s dissertation served as the foundation for much of our subsequent understanding of Cambodian history, society, and politics.
