Book Shades of Truth

Book excerpt: Sadie is a strong, extroverted 12-year-old who sees the move from Menlo Park, CA to Eagle’s Nest, MI as a grand adventure. In this new place, she can be whoever she wants to be. She has a strong relationship with her fun-loving dad, and together they work hard to help her mom, who is emotionally fragile. They both hope that this new place will be a fresh start for Sadie’s mom. Quickly Sadie learns she is not welcome in Eagle’s Nest. Her father, a mediator called in by the DNR, is tasked with creating compromise between the hunters in the community who think the bears are a nuisance and should be shot, and the scientist who is studying the bears. Sadie has never been on the outside and isn’t sure what to do with the hostile treatment from many of the kids at school. She connects with one girl at school, which helps, and also starts to befriend the (good-looking) son of the scientist. Sadie also meets a local artist, who recognizes Sadie’s talent and offers her art lessons. As Sadie learns to draw, she starts to see her community in a new way. Her art teacher takes her to Compline (evening prayers) and Sadie is drawn in by the mystery of it all. She starts asking questions about what she believes, both in terms of faith, and in terms of the issues in her community. When her father doesn’t stand up to the hunters in the way she thinks he should, she questions his values. The focus of this first book is on Sadie stumbling into questions of faith, wrestling with them, and becoming more comfortable in the space of not knowing all the answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One battle is over, but the war has just begun. They escaped the Five Realms and have found a home, but peace is much harder to find. The aftermath of the Battle of Sarikar should have been a time to mourn those lost in the slaughter. The enemies of Armania are many, however, and when one steps back to regroup, another surges forward in attack. While the remnant must take responsibility for the evil they brought to Er'Rets, it would seem that something just as dark already existed in this new world. The growing struggle between Armania and Barthel Rogedoth is but a pale reflection of a far more dangerous battle for the souls of humanity. And so begins this awe-inspiring conclusion to Jill Williamson's Kinsman Chronicles. The Hadar family and their allies prepare to make one final stand in the name of Arman. There shall be war--in Er'Rets and in the Veil--to vanquish evil or be ruled by darkness.

Book Our Town

  • Author : Cynthia Carr
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2007-03-27
  • ISBN : 0307341887
  • Pages : 514 pages

Download or read book Our Town written by Cynthia Carr and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-03-27 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brutal lynching of two young black men in Marion, Indiana, on August 7, 1930, cast a shadow over the town that still lingers. It is only one event in the long and complicated history of race relations in Marion, a history much ignored and considered by many to be best forgotten. But the lynching cannot be forgotten. It is too much a part of the fabric of Marion, too much ingrained even now in the minds of those who live there. In Our Town journalist Cynthia Carr explores the issues of race, loyalty, and memory in America through the lens of a specific hate crime that occurred in Marion but could have happened anywhere. Marion is our town, America’s town, and its legacy is our legacy. Like everyone in Marion, Carr knew the basic details of the lynching even as a child: three black men were arrested for attempted murder and rape, and two of them were hanged in the courthouse square, a fate the third miraculously escaped. Meeting James Cameron–the man who’d survived–led her to examine how the quiet Midwestern town she loved could harbor such dark secrets. Spurred by the realization that, like her, millions of white Americans are intimately connected to this hidden history, Carr began an investigation into the events of that night, racism in Marion, the presence of the Ku Klux Klan–past and present–in Indiana, and her own grandfather’s involvement. She uncovered a pattern of white guilt and indifference, of black anger and fear that are the hallmark of race relations across the country. In a sweeping narrative that takes her from the angry energy of a white supremacist rally to the peaceful fields of Weaver–once an all-black settlement neighboring Marion–in search of the good and the bad in the story of race in America, Carr returns to her roots to seek out the fascinating people and places that have shaped the town. Her intensely compelling account of the Marion lynching and of her own family’s secrets offers a fresh examination of the complex legacy of whiteness in America. Part mystery, part history, part true crime saga, Our Town is a riveting read that lays bare a raw and little-chronicled facet of our national memory and provides a starting point toward reconciliation with the past. On August 7, 1930, three black teenagers were dragged from their jail cells in Marion, Indiana, and beaten before a howling mob. Two of them were hanged; by fate the third escaped. A photo taken that night shows the bodies hanging from the tree but focuses on the faces in the crowd—some enraged, some laughing, and some subdued, perhaps already feeling the first pangs of regret. Sixty-three years later, journalist Cynthia Carr began searching the photo for her grandfather’s face.

Book Kinsmen of Another Kind

Download or read book Kinsmen of Another Kind written by Gary Clayton Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1862 the Dakota of Eastern Sioux resorted to armed conflict against the white settlers of southern Minnesota. This study uses an ethnohistorical approach to explain why the bonds of peace between the Dakota and the whites were suddenly broken. It shows how the Dakota concept of kinsmen affected the tribe's complex relationships with the whites. The Dakota were obliged to help their relatives by any means possible. Traders who were adopted or married into the tribe gained from this relationship, but had reciprocal responsibilities. After the 1820s, the trade in furs declined, more whites moved into the territory, and the Dakota became more economically dependent on the whites. When American officials and traders failed to fulfil their obligations, many Dakotas finally saw the whites as enemies to be driven from Minnesota.; This edition includes a new introduction by the author, who comments on scholarly developments in the field of ethnohistory in the 19th century.
