Romantic Vacancy argues that, at the cult of sensibility’s height, Romantic writers found alternative tropes of affect to express movement beyond sensation and the body. Grappling with sensibility’s claims that sensation could be translated into ideas and emotions, poets of vacancy rewrote core empiricist philosophies that trapped women and men in sensitive bodies and, more detrimentally, in ideological narratives about emotional response that gendered subjects’ bodies and minds. Kate Singer contends that affect’s genesis occurs instead through a series of figurative responses and movements that loop together human and nonhuman movements of mind, body, and nature into a posthuman affect. This book discovers a new form of Romantic affect that is dynamically linguistic and material. It seeks to end the long tradition of holding women and men writers of the Romantic period as separate and largely unequal. It places women writers at the forefront of speculative thinking, repositions questions of gender at the vanguard of Romantic-era thought, revises how we have long thought of gender in the period, and rewrites our notions of Romantic affect. Finally, it answers pivotal questions facing both affect studies and Romanticism about interrelations among language, affect, and materiality. Readers will learn more about the deep history of how poetic language can help us move beyond binary gender and its limiting intellectual and affective ideologies. Book excerpt: This edition presents the extant journals of Pauline Clairmont (1825–1891) and Wilhelm Clairmont (1831–1895), the niece and nephew of Claire Clairmont (1798–1879) who was Mary Shelley’s (1797–1851) stepsister. It also includes a journal originally attributed to Pauline but which likely was Walter Gaulis Clairmont’s (1868–1958; Wilhelm’s son). All three journals are currently deposited in the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle at the New York Public Library. Pauline and Wilhelm spent many years living and working in places like Australia and the Banat and their adventures are recorded in their journals. Pauline wrote a series of sixteen journals cataloguing her life; however, except for one journal, all the remaining journals have been lost. Her extant journal, written primarily in English but with French and German entries, documents her struggles in the Australian outback during the 1850s and her relationship with William Henry Suttor, Junior, who would later become a pastoralist and a politician. Pauline’s journal tells of her love for Suttor, her disappointment at his rejection, and her musings about her life in Australia. In his journal, Wilhelm chronicles his attempts to purchase a farm in Europe while Walter provides us with an account of his 8-day Austrian expedition. This new edition brings together these three journals, thereby extending our understanding of the Shelley-Clairmont family. The edition includes an introduction to the primary Godwin-Shelley-Clairmont circle and a chapter on the history of life writing. The editor provides extensive editorial notes and carefully researched chapters to contextualize The Clairmont Family Journals: 1855–1885.

With care and precision, Bock counters the prevailing view of Bronte's fiction as unconsciously confessional, clearly showing her persistent concern with the reader's collaborative role in the storytelling experience. Bock begins with an examination of the creative milieu at Haworth, where Bronte initially gained an understanding of her craft, and continues with a look at Bronte's relationship with her first audience, Branwell, Emily, and Anne, as well as the influence of her early readings in Scott, Byron, and Blackwood's Magazine. Bronte's juvenile tales are used to describe the model of storytelling that she conceptualized during these formative years - a model which reflects her belief that author and reader meet on the border of actuality and imagination in order to pursue the truths that narrative fiction can contain. Individual chapters discuss the motif of reading and storytelling in The Professor, Jane Eyre, Shirley, and Villette and consider the narrative methods which characterize Bronte's relationship with her readers in each of these novels. Bock traces Bronte's development as a storyteller from an early struggle to reconceptualize her audience as she tried to enter the literary marketplace with The Professor to, in her final novel, Villette, a complex acknowledgment of the ways truth may be encompassed - contained, named, and observed - in fictional narrative and a hopeful account of the creative event in which readers and writers participate. Charlotte Bronte and the Storyteller's Audience also includes a history of the critical reception of Bronte's novels, pointing out some of the interpretive constraints by which the practice of reading her fiction as unconscious confession has limited our understanding of her narrative skill and literary concerns.
