Local colouring, the life and manners of the time, and the feelings of those contemporary with the events described, are derivable almost wholly from this latter source, which furnishes them often in tolerable abundance. The "Antiquities" of Josephus supply less material than might have been expected, and the character of all additional material derived from this quarter requires to be weighed in the scales of a careful and sober criticism. Considerable light is thrown on the history of some of the kings by contemporary notices contained in the monuments of Egypt and Assyria. It has been the endeavour of the writer, so far as the limits of space allowed, to make full use of all these various sources of information. His labours have been much lightened by the excellent work done by many of his predecessors in the field of Sacred History, as especially by the writers of the articles on the several kings in Dr. Smith's "Dictionary of the Bible," Kitto's "Biblical Cyclopaedia," Winer's "Realworterbuch," and Ersch and Gruber's "Cyclopadie." I have, therefore, provisionally adopted the generally accepted statements. Professor Eerdmans' relative conservatism in textual matters makes it unwise to follow him implicitly, suggestive as his recent work on the composition of Genesis may be. I am, however, glad of his support in the view that the narrators of Genesis, generally speaking, believed in more than one god. If he has ignored my own work, that is no reason why I should ignore or depreciate his. Part II. contains a study of the Israelite law-books, with the exception of the Priestly Code, which, though it certainly contains a kernel of older date, is in its present form naturally considered to be post-exilic. Both here and elsewhere the point of view is that set forth in Traditions and Beliefs and in the Introduction, which, while recognising both direct and indirect Babylonian influence on Palestine, finds in the extant evidence a larger amount of reference to N. Arabian influence, both political and religious. In conclusion, I may draw attention to a passage in the Introduction relative to the one-sided character of the literary monuments of the pre-exilic period, which helps to account for the large number of problems which are very plausibly solved by the N. Arabian theory. I think that this suggestion makes for peace. The present condition of the study of the Old Testament is far from satisfactory; there is still a sad amount of partisanship, though the points at issue have changed. It was indeed true, that the empire of the world was to be connected with the Davidic kingdom (ps. Ii.) - but not in the sense Of founding a great military monarchy, nor in that of attaining universal intel lectual supremacy, least of all, by conformity to the ways and practices of heathen worship, magic, and theurgy. The exaltation of Zion above the hills, and the flowing of all nations unto it, was to be brought about by the going forth Of the Law out of Zion, and of the Word of Jehovah from Jerusalem (15. Ii. 2, This - to confine ourselves to the present period of our history - had been distinctly implied in the great promise to David (2 Sam. Vii.) it was first typically realised in the choice of Jerusalem as the City of God (ps. Xlvi. Xlviii. And further presented in its aspect of peace, prosperity, and happiness in the reign of Solomon (ps. Lxxii.) to which the prophets ever afterwards pointed as the emblem of the higher blessings in the Kingdom of God (mic. Iv. 4; Zech. Iii. 10, comp. With I Kings iv. But the great work Of that reign, alike in its national and typical importance, was the building of the Temple at Jerusalem. This also has been fully described in the following pages. But already other elements were at work. The introduction of heathen worship commenced with the decline of Solomon's spirituallife. After his death, the apostasy from God attained fearful pro portions, partially and temporarily in Judah, but permanently in Israel. In the latter, from the commencement Of its separate national existence under Jeroboam, the God-chosen Sanctuary at Jerusalem, and the God-appointed priesthood were discarded; the worship of Jehovah transformed; and by its side spurious rites and heathen idolatry introduced, till, under the reign of Ahab, the religion of Baal became that of the State. This marks the high point Of apostasy in Israel. The evolving of principles of con trariety to the Divine Covenant slowly but surely led up to the final destruction of the Jewish Commonwealth. But, side by side with it, God in great mercy placed an agency, the origin, character, and Object of which have already been indicated in a previous Volume. The Prophetic Order may be regarded as an extraordinary agency, by the side of the ordinary economy of the Old Testament; and as intended, on the one hand, to com plement its provisions, and, on the other, to supplement them, either in times of religious declension, or when, as in Israel, the people were withdrawn from their influences. Hence the great ex tension Of the Prophetic Order. In such periods, and especially in the kingdom of the ten tribes. But when, during the reign Of Ahab, the religion Of Jehovah was, so to speak, repudiated, and the worship of Baal and Astarte substituted in its place, something more than even the ordinary exercise of the Prophetic Office was required. For the prophet was no longer acknowledged, and the authority of the God, Whose Messenger he was, disowned. Both these had therefore to be vindicated, before the prophetic agency could serve its purpose. This was achieved through What must be regarded, not so much as a new phase, but as a further development of the agency already at work. We mark this chiefly in the ministry of Elljah and Elisha, which was contemporary with the first Open manifestation of Israel's national apostasy. W1th Hoshea's reign the closing scene of the southern kingdom opens upon us. He is not greatly responsible for his country's ruin, since the predisposing causes had long been at work, and nothing less than extraordinary ability, joined with extraordinary good fortune, could have warded off the evil day for any considerable period. Hoshea himself occupied the ambiguous position of subject-monarch, half dependent, half independent. He had no natural claim to the crown, but, like so many of the later kings, was a mere usurper. Difficulties would be sure to beset him on all sides, and only very consummate skill and prudence could have steered him safely through them. He was less positively irreligious than his predecessors (2 Kings xvii. 2), but still is stated to have "done evil in the sight of the Lord," by which we may gather that he, at any rate, maintained the calf-worship, if he did not also encourage foreign idolatries. But he was so far a patriotic Israelite that his subjugation galled him, and from a very early date in his reign he began to cast about for a means of escaping from it. Tiglath-Pileser, the great conqueror, who had resuscitated the Assyrian power so wonderfully in the space of seventeen years, ' died very soon after he had established Hoshea upon the Samaritan throne; and on his death, as so usually happened in Assyria, his empire was shaken to its centre.
