Drawing on the latest scientific research and their own clinical experience, Southard, Jarrett, and Pound explore the ways in which people become capable of committing horrific acts against others. They also examine the psychological and social factors that can prevent or mitigate evil behavior, and offer a vision of a more compassionate and just society. Book The Kingdom of Evils

Download or read book The Kingdom of Evils written by E. E. Southard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of Evils: Psychiatric Social Work Presented in One Hundred Case Histories Together With a Classification of Social Divisions of Evil The writing of this book had been completed, with the exception of a few passages, and the form of it had been planned before Dr. Southard's sudden death from pneumonia in February, 1920. He had said that he would do no more work upon it after February first, for one might continue indefinitely to elaborate a book such as this. We felt that its chief value would lie in the suggestiveness of the ideas presented and not in their completeness. It was not intended that the book should be either a treatise or a text-book, but a record of experience with comment. Such a work might serve several purposes, - to suggest ideas to social workers, to reveal to other professional persons the nature of social work, and to throw light upon the problems of mental hygiene for all persons interested in human life. Mr. Pound has said that "it is a book to quarry in." Among the passages that Dr. Southard had not written were some on medical subjects, which his friend, Dr. Harry C. Solomon, was kind enough to write in accordance with views held by Dr. Southard. The cases were not chosen as examples of successful social work, but were selected because they were believed to be instructive, whether by reason of success or failure. The work of the social service of the Psychopathic Hospital during the period that this book records was the sum of much earnest and thoughtful effort on the part of many workers, assistants, students, and volunteers, to whom I wish that I might make personal acknowledgment at this time. Book excerpt: When did Satan fall? We know that the angels were created prior to the Earth. We find Satan had already fallen in Genesis 3. The mystery is, when did he fall? It appears that there are substantial Scriptural references to his rebellion, his agenda, and the subsequent catastrophic judgment that ensued. This raises the whole issue of the origin of evil. And why hasn't God simply wiped him, and sin, out completely? It is also disturbing to recognize that Satan tempted Jesus by offering him the kingdom, power and the glory in the temptations recorded in Luke 5. How could Satan lay a legitimate claim to these?

Book Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God

Download or read book Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God written by Marilyn McCord Adams and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When confronted by horrendous evil, even the most pious believer may question not only life's worth but also God's power and goodness. A distinguished philosopher and a practicing minister, Marilyn McCord Adams has written a highly original work on a fundamental dilemma of Christian thought—how to reconcile faith in God with the evils that afflict human beings. Adams argues that much of the discussion in analytic philosophy of religion over the last forty years has offered too narrow an understanding of the problem. The ground rules accepted for the discussion have usually led philosophers to avert their gaze from the worst—horrendous—evils and their devastating impact on human lives. They have agreed to debate the issue on the basis of religion-neutral values, and have focused on morals, an approach that—Adams claims—is inadequate for formulating and solving the problem of horrendous evils. She emphasizes instead the fruitfulness of other evaluative categories such as purity and defilement, honor and shame, and aesthetics. If redirected, philosophical reflection on evil can, Adams's book demonstrates, provide a valuable approach not only to theories of God and evil but also to pastoral care.

Book Evil in Modern Thought

Download or read book Evil in Modern Thought written by Susan Neiman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether expressed in theological or secular terms, evil poses a problem about the world's intelligibility. It confronts philosophy with fundamental questions: Can there be meaning in a world where innocents suffer? Can belief in divine power or human progress survive a cataloging of evil? Is evil profound or banal? Neiman argues that these questions impelled modern philosophy. Traditional philosophers from Leibniz to Hegel sought to defend the Creator of a world containing evil. Inevitably, their efforts--combined with those of more literary figures like Pope, Voltaire, and the Marquis de Sade--eroded belief in God's benevolence, power, and relevance, until Nietzsche claimed He had been murdered. They also yielded the distinction between natural and moral evil that we now take for granted. Neiman turns to consider philosophy's response to the Holocaust as a final moral evil, concluding that two basic stances run through modern thought. One, from Rousseau to Arendt, insists that morality demands we make evil intelligible. The other, from Voltaire to Adorno, insists that morality demands that we don't.

Book excerpt: He’s young. He’s hot. He’s also evil. He’s . . . the librarian. When Cynthia Rothschild’s best friend, Annie, falls head over heels for the new high-school librarian, Cyn can totally see why. He’s really young and super cute and thinks Annie would make an excellent library monitor. But after meeting Mr. Gabriel, Cyn realizes something isn’t quite right. Maybe it’s the creepy look in the librarian’s eyes, or the weird feeling Cyn gets whenever she’s around him. Before long Cyn realizes that Mr. Gabriel is, in fact . . . a demon. Now, in addition to saving the school musical from technical disaster and trying not to make a fool of herself with her own hopeless crush, Cyn has to save her best friend from the clutches of the evil librarian, who also seems to be slowly sucking the life force out of the entire student body! From best-selling author Michelle Knudsen, here is the perfect novel for teens who like their horror served up with a bit of romance, plenty of humor, and some pretty hot guys (of both the good and evil variety).
