Book excerpt: A mysterious stranger (calling himself the "Selector") approaches two best friends, one a second-born prince and the other a pauper, with an improbable if not laughable offer: to become the next co-kings of the distant land of Artesia. After some persuasion, they overcome their families' objections and return with him only to find their new kingdom in ruin. They learn over time of the recent history and true nature of its citizens, the outcasts from the traditional fantasy characters: instead of the Elves who amass in a forest, Artesia has mysterious Sprites; vicious Fairies routinely torment visitors to their marsh, including their flightless relatives, the Brownies; Horsemen with the bodies of donkeys are subject to ridicule from their thoroughbred-like Centaur cousins; so too are the Satyrs, who are born with large feet instead of the hooves of the Fauns, and the Rollies, rejected by the Dwarfs; Giants live nearby, but Artesia has Cyclopes who are generally subject to genocide; Humans reside only in Artesia, rejected outright by most of the other races. In this first installment of books that are serial in nature, bigotry, murder, betrayal, and conflicting social structures contend with the ideals of honor and brotherhood in the great social experiment of Artesia, a kingdom founded by the still present Sorcerer Myrddin.

Book excerpt: The many mysteries of the recent past begin to unfold, but the Sorcerer warns his audience that he will present truths that they may be unprepared to hear: twin princess daughters knew that they would at last know the identity of the treacherous murderer of their father, one of the two prior kings of Artesia; a trusted Kings' Advisor wondered how the kingdom that he loved had spiraled into such a state of disorder in the three short years he had been gone as Selector of the new Kings; a storied Quartermaine and now Kings' Captain wanted to know how Goblins penetrated the kingdom's defenses, killed his best friend, and brought down the glory of the land's premier castle; an Elfin crown prince mistakenly thought that the warning was intended for the others in the room; two reunited childhood friends, once torn apart by a mysterious long-past episode, were about to have the old wound reopened wider and deeper than the original scared gash; and two young kings sat in awe as they faced the prodigious truth of the reign they had recently inherited. This third installment of the Artesian Serial provides greater understanding of the relationships between the two principle allies of the region, the Elves and Artesia, as well as the downfall of the prior kings.

Book excerpt: With improving conditions in the kingdom, the new Kings still find themselves estranged from the powerful Sorcerer Myrddin. While perhaps no one could have stopped the abduction and possible murder of his only daughter, the lack of any attempt on the part of Artesia has caused a chasm between the founder and descendents of the once great kingdom. Though only three of the four Shieldlets remain in the possession of the new Kings-a gift provided at great personal cost by Myrddin to protect their land-the only chance for a rescue means using that same power outside the borders, leaving the land even further exposed. Even still, a traitor remains in their midst, guilty of murdering a prior king and no doubt still working to subvert the new dual monarchy, but the Sorcerer's daughter may be able to reveal the horrible truth. In the midst of cultural and political upheaval, two young men must also face personal challenges: old family wounds resurface for an often belittled and ignored former prince as he refuses to accept similar relationships in his new kingdom, just as a pauper must take a giant leap and establish his footing as a co-ruler. For the sake of honor and as partial repayment for years of benevolent care, the kingdom must risk everything for the sake of a few; the young Kings must unite the many races of their new kingdom and blend the various strengths of all to achieve a nearly impossible goal: rescue the Sorcerer's daughter.

Book Maldonado Journey to the Kingdom of New Mexico

Download or read book Maldonado Journey to the Kingdom of New Mexico written by Gilbert Maldonado and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume VIII is a continuation of the journey of the Maldonado family to the Kingdom of New Mexico. It documents the Maldonado descendants of Juan Lpez de Godoy and Yns Lucero y Gonzlez Jaramillo through their son Maese de Campo (Commanding General) Pedro Lucero de Godoy and his two wives, Petronila de Zamora and Francisca Gmez Robledo, both pioneering New Mexico families. This includes not only their direct line of descent, but also cousins, uncles, aunts, and in-laws. The Maldonado database has more than 5,800 names with many of them represented here. The time period is generally from 1598 through the nineteenth century for most names, though the direct line continues to the present. Pedro Lucero de Godoy is the ancestor of many people living in New Mexico today. In this volume his other descendants can trace their connections to cousins from this extended Maldonado family. Juan Lpez de Godoy and Yns Lucero y Gonzlez Jaramillo are my tenth great-grandparents. Pedro Lucero de Godoy and Petronila de Zamora are my ninth great-grandparents. Petronila de Zamora is also my ninth great-grandaunt because her parents, Bartolom de Montoya and Mara de Zamora, are my double tenth great-grandparents. Don Pedros second wife, doa Francisca Gmez Robledo, whom he married following the death of Petronila de Zamora, is my ninth great-grandmother by virtue of her marriage to Pedro Lucero de Godoy; but, she is also my first cousin ten times removed, the great-granddaughter of my eleventh great-grandparents Pedro Robledo and Catalina Lpez.

Book A Critical Old spelling Edition of The Birth of Merlin Q 1662

Download or read book A Critical Old spelling Edition of The Birth of Merlin Q 1662 written by Joanna Udall and published by MHRA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Credited on its first title page to William Shakespeare and William Rowley, The Birth of Merlin continues to provoke speculation about its place in the Shakespeare 'Apocrypha'. The play is an imaginative re-working of the story of Merlin the Magician and his part in the struggle against the Saxon invasion of Britain. It contains not only scenes of love, war, and court politics, but a devil, a clown, and an unusual number of spectacular stage effects. This edition seeks to provide contexts for the play's diverse elements (chronicle history, romance, spectacle, and comedy), and considers its relationships with a wide variety of texts from Geoffrey of Monmouth and the English prose Brut to Shakespeare's Henry VIII.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem was the great lost realm of chivalry. Created by leaders of the First Crusade at the start of the 12th Century, it was a feudal state comprised of Antioch, Edessa, Tripoli, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Ashqelon Krak, Montreal, Sidin and Galilee that lasted for two hundred years, surrounded by the Muslims of Palestine and Syria. This classic volume presents a picture of the curious social conditions which resulted from the establishment of a feudal society amid Oriental surroundings and traces a growth of civilization and prosperity during the two centuries of Latin rule.
