Book The King s Two Bodies in Shakespeare s Henriad

Download or read book The King s Two Bodies in Shakespeare s Henriad written by Sophia M. Feingold and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the body politic in Shakespeare's second tetralogy. Taking an approach indebted to Ernst Kantorowicz and later studies of the king's two bodies, it examines the implicit political theologies of Shakespeare's three kings, through whose words and actions Shakespeare presents a range of ideas regarding the naturalness of the body politic and the implications differing conceptions have for the relationship between members and head. In so doing, Shakespeare demonstrates the difficulty of fully understanding the theoretical and lived implications of one's political theology. The first chapter covers contemporary political ideas that Shakespeare problematizes in the tetralogy. The second chapter argues that in Richard II Shakespeare shows Richard mistreating the body politic while invoking the king's two bodies, actions that lead, with the inevitability of a natural process, to his own destruction; just as Richard must reexamine his ideology, so too the audience must learn to navigate between the two poles of idealism and pragmatism. The third chapter shows how in 1 Henry IV Shakespeare portrays four actions that expand the range of attitudes to political community: the rebellion of Hotspur that fragments the body politic, the disorder of Falstaff that subverts it, the insistence of Henry IV on dominion, and the aspirations of Prince Hal to redeem his time and reputation by orderly reconstitution of the humors of the body politic. The fourth chapter argues that in 2 Henry IV Shakespeare shows Hal failing to incorporate Falstaff into a body politic, which suggests that Hal's self-revelation as a reformed prodigal may not suffice to order his members while respecting their distinctiveness. The fifth chapter focuses on how in Henry V Shakespeare presents Harry as a ruler whose heroic actions and organic language conflict; Harry unifies the body politic but fails to stabilize it completely. I conclude by arguing that through these three portraits, Shakespeare shows ideas of the body politic-not to prescribe a political theology but, rather, to display how readily people err regarding the universality of their political ideals, the real meaning of their content, and the human consequences of those errors.

Book excerpt: Uncovers the workings of sovereign power in Shakespeare's history plays Presents a sustained, formalist reading of Shakespeare's history playsReads Shakespeare's history plays for their contribution to political thought, and to theories of sovereigntyDelivers a thorough and wide-ranging formal analysis of Shakespearean body parts, both literal and figurativePresents a particular view of Shakespeare's language-use as "e;baroque"e;, its convolutions contributing to complex articulations of sovereign willCapitalises on current theories of authorship in relation to the history plays in order to assess Shakespeare's particular contribution to how sovereignty is imagined in the late sixteenth centuryThis book provides a sustained, formalist reading of the multiple body parts that litter the dialogue and action of Shakespeare's history plays, including Henry V, Richard III, Richard II, King John and Henry IV. With a starting point in literary critical analyses of these dislocated bodies, the book tracks Shakespeare's relentless pursuit of a specific political question: how does human flesh, blood and bone relate to sovereignty? Griffiths advances our understanding of how human bodies are captured by - and escape - the grip of political systems.

Book excerpt: The role of the human body as a poetic and ideological construct in the 1590 Faerie Queene provides the point of departure for David Lee Miller's richly detailed treatment of Spenser's allegory. In this major contribution to the study of Renaissance literature and ideology, Miller finds the poem organized by a fantasy of bodily wholeness that, like the marriage of Arthur and Gloriana, is both anticipated and deferred in the text. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. For this second edition of King Richard II Andrew Gurr has added a new section to the introduction, in which he discusses a number of important theatrical productions as well as the scholarly criticism of recent years. Gurr foregrounds the growing interest in re-historicising and re-politicising the play, emphasising that, to Shakespeare's contemporaries, King Richard II was a balanced dramatisation of the central political and constitutional issue of the day: how to reign-in an unjust ruler. The Introduction provides a full context for both contemporaneous and modern views of King Richard's fall. An updated reading list completes the edition.

Book Shakespeare s Pluralistic Concepts of Character

Download or read book Shakespeare s Pluralistic Concepts of Character written by Imtiaz H. Habib and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presentation of a complex character such as Shylock bears resemblance to the technique of anamorphic portraiture and trick perspective in the sense that, seen one way he appears a villain, but seen another way he appears a persecuted victim. The clashing and merging of opposed frames of ideological reference that cannot be held apart or resolved and that remain in a kind of uneasy balance may be a technique of comic characterization that exploits relativism and ambiguity in the presentation of human personality and self on stage. A similar technique can be seen at work in the Histories in the characters of Richard and Bolingbroke, who, as has long been noted, compete contrarily for the audience's ideological sympathies over the course of the play.

Book Shakespeare s Knowledgeable Body

Download or read book Shakespeare s Knowledgeable Body written by Martha Kalnin Diede and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a new approach to the metaphor of the political body, this book examines Shakespeare's representation of that body as possessing epistemological faculties. The theater is one of these faculties, and is, therefore, essential to the health and survival of the Early Modern state. By depicting the theater as an essential faculty of the body politic, Shakespeare offers a defense of the theater against anti-theatrical critics. Students and teachers interested in the body and its representations in literature will find this text illuminating as will those scholars whose work focuses on knowledge, its relationship to the body, ways of knowing, and anti-theatrical prejudice.

Book The Soul of Statesmanship

Download or read book The Soul of Statesmanship written by Khalil M. Habib and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare’s plays explore a staggering range of political topics, from the nature of tyranny, to the practical effects of Christianity on politics and the family, to the meaning and practice of statesmanship. From great statesmen like Burke and Lincoln to the American frontiersman sitting by his rustic fire, those wrestling with the problems of the human soul and its confrontation with a puzzling world of political peril and promise have long considered these plays a source of political wisdom. The chapters in this volume support and illuminate this connection between Shakespearean drama and politics by examining a matter of central concern in both domains: the human soul. By depicting a bewildering variety of characters as they seek happiness and self-knowledge in the context of differing political regimes, family ties, religious duties, friendships, feuds, and poetic inspirations, Shakespeare illuminates the complex interdynamics between self-rule and political governance, educating readers by compelling us to share in the struggles of and relate to the tensions felt by each character in a way that no political treatise or lecture can. The authors of this volume, drawing upon expertise in fields such as political philosophy, American government, and law, explore the Bard’s dramatization of perennial questions about human nature, moral virtue, and statesmanship, demonstrating that reading his plays as works of philosophical literature enhances our understanding of political life and provides a source of advice and inspiration for the citizens and statesmen of today and tomorrow.

Book Representing Shakespeare

Download or read book Representing Shakespeare written by Robert Shaughnessy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text traces the changing theatrical and cultural identity of the History plays in the context of postwar social and political conflict, crisis and change. Since the company's inception in the early 1960s, the RSC's commitment to relevance has fostered close relationships between Shakespearean criticism and performance, and between the theatre and its audiences. Through a detailed discussion of key productions, from "The War of the Roses" in 1963 to "The Plantegenets" in 1988, Robert Shaughnessy emphasizes the political dimension of contemporary theatrical representations of Shakespeare, and of the "Shakespearean" modes of history that these plays have been employed to promote; individualist, cyclical, male-dominated, and driven by essentialised, transcendent human nature.

Book Deadwood and Shakespeare

Download or read book Deadwood and Shakespeare written by Susan Cosby Ronnenberg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in politically unstable environments, Shakespeare's history plays--Richard II, 1 Henry IV, 2 Henry IV and Henry V--and HBO's Western series Deadwood (2004-2006) all stand as critiques of myths of national origin, the sanitized stories we tell ourselves about how power imposes order on chaos. Drawing parallels between the Shakespeare plays and Deadwood, the author explores questions about legitimate political authority, the qualities of an effective leader, gender roles and community, and the reciprocal relationship between past and present in historical narratives.
