Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. • Author : David Branscome

Download or read book Textual Rivals written by David Branscome and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textual Rivals studies some of the most debated issues in Herodotean scholarship. One such is Herodotus’ self-presentation: the conspicuousness of his authorial persona is one of the most remarkable features of his Histories. So frequently does he interject first-person comments into the narrative that Herodotus at times almost becomes a character within his own text. Important issues are tied to Herodotus’ self-presentation. First is the narrator’s relationship to truth: to what extent does he expect readers to trust his narrative? While judgments regarding Herodotus’ overall veracity have often been damning, scholars have begun to concentrate on how Herodotus presents his truthfulness. Second is the precise genre Herodotus means to create with his work. Excluding the anachronistic term historian, exactly what would Herodotus have called himself, as author? Third is the presence of “self-referential” characters, whose actions often mirror Herodotus’ as narrator/researcher, in the Histories. David Branscome’s investigative text points to the rival inquirers in Herodotus’ Histories as a key to unraveling these interpretive problems. The rival inquirers are self-referential characters Herodotus uses to further his authorial self-presentation. Through the contrast Herodotus draws between his own exacting standards as an inquirer and the often questionable standards of those rivals, Herodotus underlines just how truthful readers should find his own work. Textual Rivals speaks to those interested in Greek history and historiography, narratology, and ethnography. Those in the growing ranks of Herodotus fans will find much to invite and intrigue.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rivals; Or the Grey Vs; The Blue: A Tragedy Stuart. Well spoken, sir. I have all confidence in your ability and willingness to perform the duty to which I am about to assign you. I am much in need of an efficient scout to keep me informed of the movements of Gen. Grant, and feeling that I can rely on your prudence and skill, I hereby commission you for that duty. You may select such of your comrades from the "Jeff. Davis Legion" as you may wish to aid you in the discharge of the arduous task to which you are assigned. [Writing an order.] Who will you have, Sergeant, that I may include them in this order? Shad. General, I would like Bob Harrison, or Sleepy Jack, as he is called, of Company C. I have seen him tried, and know him to be as true as steel. Stuart. Why do they call him Sleepy Jack? Shad. It is only a nick-name given him by his comrades, because he is so hard to wake: but he can stand more hard marching than any man I ever saw. Stuart. You shall have him, sir; who else do you wish? Shad. James Bond, known better in the "Jeff." under the sobriquet of Night Hawk, for being ever wide-awake, and seeing and knowing more that transpires at night than the camp guard. He is a good one, General, and can be relied on in any emergency. Stuart. I have included him. Any one else? Shad. No, General, they are sufficient for the present. Stuart. Why, only two? Shad. And I make three. Stuart. A spike team, upon my word. Shad. If you will pardon the expression, General, I can assure you that Hawk and Jack are, in themselves, a whole six mule team, and you will find it out ere long. Stuart. You know them best, Sergeant, and I am willing to trust to your judgment. You will enter the enemy's lines, gain all the information you can, as to their movements, numbers, &c., that may be important, and report promptly to me in person or by one of your trusted men. Grant's pickets are near Howard's Church, where I wish you to go at once, and see what movement is contemplated in that direction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of the early American republic as a new nation on the world stage conjured rival visions in the eyes of leading statesmen at home and attentive observers abroad. Thomas Jefferson envisioned the newly independent states as a federation of republics united by common experience, mutual interest, and an adherence to principles of natural rights. His views on popular government and the American experiment in republicanism, and later the expansion of its empire of liberty, offered an influential account of the new nation. While persuasive in crucial respects, his vision of early America did not stand alone as an unrivaled model. The contributors to Rival Visions examine how Jefferson’s contemporaries—including Washington, Adams, Hamilton, Madison, and Marshall—articulated their visions for the early American republic. Even beyond America, in this age of successive revolutions and crises, foreign statesmen began to formulate their own accounts of the new nation, its character, and its future prospects. This volume reveals how these vigorous debates and competing rival visions defined the early American republic in the formative epoch after the revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King's Men He flung open the door and fell over the legs of Smith himself. Smith always sat by the door, because his room was small, and usually held a dozen men who needed to be supplied with biscuits from the kitchen. Then everyone in the room stopped talking and shouted the name of John. It was a custom for those who held the key to shout the name of each confederate as he came. John was not a Christian name - Christian names were barred as being insufficiently austere for these meetings. It was the family name of Mr Kenneth John. You might have known my legs would be there. They always are, said Smith. That is mere foolishness, said John, brushing his knees. Nothing will ever again be where it was before. Is there any more news? Asked a pale young man from the window.
