Book The King s English

Download or read book The King s English written by Kingsley Amis and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Parthian shot from one of the most important figures in post-war British fiction, The King's English is the late Kingsley Amis's last word on the state of the language. More frolicsome than Fowler's Modern Usage, lighter than the Oxford English Dictionary, and brimming with the strong opinions and razor-sharp wit that made Amis so popular--and so controversial--The King's English is a must for fans and language purists.

Book excerpt: Aden, of old one of the main Eurasian ports for goods from China, Southeast Asia and India on their way to the Mediterranean lands, was controlled during the 13th - 15th centuries by the Rasūlid dynasty. One of their kings, al-Malik al-Afḍal al- ‘Abbās b. ‘Alī (1363-1377) wrote multilingual glossaries (vocabularia) of extraordinary importance, universally termed the Rasūlid Hexaglot. Its emergence caused quite a stir (e.g. New York Times, February 1981), and it is with pride that we now present our customers with the authoritative translation, commentary, and explanation of the socio-historical context by a group of major experts. The Arabic, Persian, Turkic, Greek, Armenian and Mongol languages in the King’s Dictionary were the most important tongues of the Eastern Mediterranean. The Greek, Armenian and Mongol sections, in particular, provide one of the few examples of transcriptions of living vernacular forms of the era. Thomas Allsen’s captivating chapter on the Eurasian Cultural Context of the dictionary makes clear, i.a., the depth of connections among several Eurasian cultural areas in the aftermath of the Mongol conquests.

Book excerpt: Had Dickens owned a copy of The King's English he would not have written 'your great ability and trustfulness'; he would have recognized the malapropism and realized that context demanded trustworthiness. It is due to him, however, to say that his warnings have now and then been disregarded, when it seemed that brevity or some other advantage could be secured without great risk Of misunderstanding. Book King s Dictionary of Boston Classic Reprint

Download or read book King s Dictionary of Boston Classic Reprint written by Edwin M. Bacon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King's Dictionary of Boston The first impression, doubtless, which this book will make upon one who takes it in hand will be of the abundance of the material which is to be found for it, and of the convenience coming from having what is in it so method ically disposed. The models for the volume were, of course, the well-known Dictionary of London and Dictionary of Paris. But it has peculiar features of its own, which make it preferable to them in method, arrange ment, and the form in which information is presented. There are in it more than twelve hundred titles of articles, arranging the subjects of them alpha betically, under the leading word most likely to be turned to by the inquirer. These cover all the local features, landmarks, visible objects of' interest in the territory; the government and public institutions of the city in their various departments; the corporations and societies administered here; the organizations of its citizens, mercantile, literary, charitable, and social; its clubs and fraternities and its repositories of literature, science, and the arts, with an account of their administration. Incidentally many local customs, Observances, and commemorations are recognized. There is also very much of history spread through the pages, with descriptions and statistics. Dis cussion, comment, and all irrelevant themes are avoided. Accuracy of state ment, with conciseness and condensation, have of necessity been kept strictly in view; and so the information is authentic, sufficiently extended, and, as a whole, surprisingly full. The variety of headings under which this informa tion -most needed by strangers and visitors to the city and, indeed, most welcome to our own citizens is distributed, forcibly reminds us of the prog ress towards expansion, enrichment, and even to a shade of cosmopolitanism, which the amazing strides of human progress in two and a half centuries, and the special influences which have developed wealth and enterprise, has realized on this old hpeninsula, the site of an English colony. The point of view, therefore, under which this Dictionary may admit of an Introduction is that of tracing the development of the town and city, its expansion, and its enrichment, leading on to its present opulence, its advanced administration, the number and variety of its resources and institutions, and. The composition of its population. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
