Book excerpt: Crime Does Pay: The King of West Brooklyn Scores a Knockout Punch "The Mezzatestas, David Alexander's fictitious crime family in The King of West Brooklyn, are the new Corleones." -- USA Today "Bestseller! Bestseller! Bestseller! The word should be shouted at least three times as a kind of Brooklyn cheer, because David Alexander's crime thriller The King of West Brooklyn has "Bestseller!" written all over it." -- NY Daily News "Today Brooklyn, tomorrow the world ... David Alexander has the names of two conquering heroes and The King of West Brooklyn is world-class ... a thriller with style, guts and endless quantities of Brooklyn chutzpah applied as thickly as mozzarella cheese on a Brooklyn pizza. Alexander is an author who is going places. Hopefully one of them is not jail, as some of the criminal capers described in the novel read almost like he was taking notes at the scene of the crime ." -- L.A. Times "The Mezzatestas, David Alexander's fictitious crime family in The King of West Brooklyn, are the new Corleones." -- USA Today "If mob-related hits haven't already put Gravesend, the crime capital of West Brooklyn, on the map, The King of West Brooklyn is destined to do so." -- Daily News "Today Brooklyn, tomorrow the world ... Alexander is an author who is going places. Hopefully one of them is not jail, as some of the criminal capers described in the novel read almost like he was taking notes at the scene of the crime." -- L.A. Times "If James Bond wore athletic shirts, spoke with a Brooklyn accent and drove a candy apple-red 1973 Plymouth Barracuda, he'd be Dominick de Venise, the edgy protagonist of David Alexander's smashing crime thriller The King of West Brooklyn." -- Kirkus Reviews Applause for Author David Alexander "... All muscle, no flab..." Daily News "What Tom Clancy did for submarines, Alexander has done with the contemporary realities of global terrorism, high-tech weapons and the robotization of the battlefield." -- Jack Phelps / Independent Reviews "This boat ride through the Tunnel of Fear nails you to your seat. Don't get on unless you have the guts to finish the ride!" -- Stun Gun Sam / Independent Reviews Critical acclaim for Kill Chain "Passenger jets disappear out of thin air ... terrorist armies drape black flags across failed states ... chaos in the streets of American cities ... and the threat of terrible doom gathers steam as this thriller draws to a powerful climax ... Alexander ... has thought of everything and then some...." -- Voice Book Reviews "This is not just another novel; this is history in the making ... a game changing ... thriller." -- Booklister

Book excerpt: A Brooklyn love story, set to music: Kings County “crystallizes how it feels to be young and in love in New York City” (Stephanie Danler). It’s the early 2000s and like generations of ambitious young people before her, Audrey Benton arrives in New York City on a bus from nowhere. Broke but resourceful, she soon finds a home for herself amid the burgeoning music scene in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. But the city’s freedom comes with risks, and Audrey makes compromises to survive. As she becomes a minor celebrity in indie rock circles, she finds an unlikely match in Theo Gorski, a shy but idealistic mill-town kid who’s struggling to establish himself in the still-patrician world of books. But then an old acquaintance of Audrey’s disappears under mysterious circumstances, sparking a series of escalating crises that force the couple to confront a dangerous secret from her past. From the raucous heights of Occupy Wall Street to the comical lows of the publishing industry, from million-dollar art auctions to Bushwick drug dens, Kings County captures New York City at a moment of cultural reckoning. Grappling with the resonant issues and themes of our time—sex and violence, art and commerce, friendship and family—it is an epic coming-of-age tale about love, consequences, bravery, and fighting for one’s place in an ever-changing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unthinkable has happened -- again. A terrorist strike on a major New York City landmark leaves behind an aftermath of death and destruction. Caught at ground zero is NYPD detective Jack Keller who barely escapes with his life. His longtime friend and former partner is not as lucky. Keller vows to bring the terrorist mastermind behind the strike to justice. He tracks him down in a global manhunt. Yet unknown to Keller time is running out. His quarry is gearing up for the boldest terrorist attack in history. Iran has given terrorists a theater nuclear missile in a bid to out-do the death toll on 911. If successful the doomsday plan will unleash a nuclear nightmare on millions of victims and set the stage for worse to come. In the end everything hinges on a hard-as-nails New York police detective who stakes his life in a global chase after the terrorist chieftain he's determined to bring to justice no matter what or who he has to sacrifice in order to do it. The action scenes in Paris and Venice are gripping and move faster than greased lightning, giving the impression that Alexander knows every back street, hidden ally and public square, every public monument and off-the-beaten-path corner of these European cities, and also knows just which elements to use in his masterfully conceived and boldly executed plot. The dark narrative tapestry of Chain Reaction also places this thriller squarely amid the select ranks of classic hardboiled fiction. This is a contemporary thriller, though, and one in which Alexander manages to mix successfully an intricate plot with exotic locales, a considerable amount of action, and solid characters. Chain reaction is a thriller fan's dream; exciting, involving, thought-provoking. All in all, a first-class tale of intrigue by one of the top authors in the field.

Book The Suffragents

  • Author : Brooke Kroeger
  • Publisher : SUNY Press
  • Release : 2017-05-11

Download or read book The Suffragents written by Brooke Kroeger and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how and why a group of prominent and influential men in New York City and beyond came together to help women gain the right to vote. The Suffragents is the untold story of how some of New York’s most powerful men formed the Men’s League for Woman Suffrage, which grew between 1909 and 1917 from 150 founding members into a force of thousands across thirty-five states. Brooke Kroeger explores the formation of the League and the men who instigated it to involve themselves with the suffrage campaign, what they did at the behest of the movement’s female leadership, and why. She details the National American Woman Suffrage Association’s strategic decision to accept their organized help and then to deploy these influential new allies as suffrage foot soldiers, a role they accepted with uncommon grace. Led by such luminaries as Oswald Garrison Villard, John Dewey, Max Eastman, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, and George Foster Peabody, members of the League worked the streets, the stage, the press, and the legislative and executive branches of government. In the process, they helped convince waffling politicians, a dismissive public, and a largely hostile press to support the women’s demand. Together, they swayed the course of history. “The Suffragents is proof that the clatter of dishes that America’s power brokers were hearing as they sat in their smoking parlors back in the early twentieth century meant more than clean china and emptied ashtrays. Someone was cooking up plans. The book reveals the careful, never-before-told story of how women carefully calculated and planned their own liberation, directing the prominent power brokers in America into action. With smooth efficiency and the touch of a novelist, Brooke Kroeger shows how the suffragist movement, engineered by women from top to bottom, cleverly stitched in the involvement of men from all walks of professional and political life, directed by women who used neither gun nor blade to direct the men, but the weapons of intelligence, cleverness, and when necessary, subterfuge. The collaboration in this balance of power between prominent men who invested in the movement, and the women who directed them, has everything to teach us today.” — James McBride, author of The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother and The Good Lord Bird “Not all the suffragists who risked ridicule to march down Fifth Avenue in the big parades touting votes for women wore dresses. Brooke Kroeger meticulously documents the largely unsung role of men who publicly supported their wives, mothers, sisters, or lovers in the final dramatic decade of women’s seventy-year battle for the ballot.” — Linda J. Lumsden, author of Inez: The Life and Times of Inez Milholland and Rampant Women: Suffragists and the Right of Assembly “Women ‘need’ men to get the rights they deserve: after all, men had to vote to let women vote. Brooke Kroeger gives us the first history of the Men’s League for Woman Suffrage, the ‘Gentleman’s Auxiliary’ of the women’s movement. Eschewing the spotlight, they supported gender equality, as we all should, because it’s quite simply the right thing to do. With this gift, Kroeger gives us back a bit of our history.” — Michael S. Kimmel, coeditor of Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776–1990: A Documentary History
