Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a medieval perspective, God had provided a church to shepherd believers toward salvation. It had a divine mission, a sacred history, a hierarchy of officers, and the intellectual support of respected thinkers. It provided a means for believers to interact with God. Believers also had to interact with neighbors, strangers, and their rulers. Fear God, Honor the King considers that sometimes surprisingly problematic issue. What is the correct relationship between the church, believers, and the ruling magisterial authority (whether alderman, mayors, or kings)? The thinkers of the Reformation era produced many answers. They explained in a variety of ways how the church related to, or fit in with, or was separate from, or was controlled by the temporal government of the realm, and they set into motion what became the determinant factors—social, political, economic, and philosophical—underpinning modern Western societies’ determination to keep the church and the state in well-defined autonomous cubicles. The Reformers’ rival ideas ushered in new philosophies (such as conciliarism and localism) as well as directly conflicting doctrines (such as Luther’s two kingdoms or Bucer’s co-terminus). This book examines, compares, and explains these new theories using the voices of the Reformers’ themselves.

Book excerpt: Four planets destroyed. Three galactic empires. Two unlikely allies. One obvious enemy. Three superpowers collide at the TriStar Border. It is ten years since the Kerradite War ended. The Manadine Empire, reeling from its first defeat in more than 3000 years, has apparently unleashed a terrifying new weapon. Four planets are destroyed in a matter of minutes and the balance of power has suddenly shifted. Old hatreds have always died harder than the people that created them but the Manadine Empire itself is in turmoil. The emperor lies dead, slain by an ancient curse, and the heir to the Purple Throne is plagued by dreams that foreshadow death and destruction should he become emperor. For Prince Tusmak the choice is as simple as it is difficult: save his empire or save himself... As the galaxy heads for another catastrophic war the TriStar Border becomes the playground of spies and assassins seeking profit, and warriors seeking revenge. A blend of science fiction and fantasy, The Fear Of Death is a character-driven tale of politics, betrayal, revenge, and sacrifice where there is only one truth: if you want to live, don't be afraid to die.

Book Reading Fear in Flavian Epic

Download or read book Reading Fear in Flavian Epic written by Dalida Agri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the textual representations of emotions, fear in particular, through the lens of Stoic thought and their impact on depictions of power, gender, and agency. It first draws attention to the role and significance of fear, and cognate emotions, in the tyrant's psyche, and then goes on to explore how these emotions, in turn, shape the wider narratives. The focus is on the lengthy epics of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Statius' Thebaid, and Silius Italicus' Punica. All three poems are obsessed with men in power with no power over themselves, a marked concern that carries a strong Senecan fingerprint. Seneca's influence on post-Neronian epic can be felt beyond his plays. His Epistles and other prose works prove particularly illuminating for each of the poet's gendered treatment of the relationship between power and emotion. By adopting a Roman Stoic perspective, both philosophical and cultural, this study brings together a cluster of major ideas to draw meaningful connections and unlock new readings.

Book Images of Fear

Download or read book Images of Fear written by Martin Tropp and published by McFarland. This book was released on 1999-11-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Western Front in World War I, a generation faced a horrifying reality that ushered in the modern age. But in the previous century, many of the fears we still face were first given form in the pages of popular fiction. Books such as Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dracula became modern myths because they gave people a safe way to confront modern fears also taking shape at that time. By looking at such varied subjects as Victorian architecture, urban crime, women's rights, and the impact of new technology, we can come to understand the peculiar relationship between horror in literature and the horror of daily life. World War I made it clear that the images of horror in popular fiction had not been an escape from the world around us, but a way of seeing deeper into it, as well as revealing the shape of things to come.

Book The Theology of Fear in Thomas Aquinas s Summa Theologiae

Download or read book The Theology of Fear in Thomas Aquinas s Summa Theologiae written by Nathan Luis Cartagena and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theology of Fear in Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae excavates and explores Thomas Aquinas’s comparatively expansive theology of fear that he develops in the Summa theologiae. Whereas many classify fear under a single category (e.g., an emotion, passion, or sentiment), Thomas specifies seven major categories of fear, including the passion and gift of fear. And while many classify courage as the lone virtue indexed to fear, Thomas argues that courage and perseverance perfect it, adding that a Spirit-empowered gift of courage also perfects human fears so that human beings may attain and remain in blessedness. A work in retrieval theology designed for Thomas and non-Thomas scholars operating within the interactions of theology and psychology, this book argues that understanding this theology’s motivations, internal coherence, and merits is necessary for understanding Thomas’s instruction for beginners in the Christian religion and its ongoing relevance for today.
