Download or read book Bourbon Street written by Richard Campanella and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Orleans is a city of many storied streets, but only one conjures up as much unbridled passion as it does fervent hatred, simultaneously polarizing the public while drawing millions of visitors a year. A fascinating investigation into the mile-long urban space that is Bourbon Street, Richard Campanella’s comprehensive cultural history spans from the street’s inception during the colonial period through three tumultuous centuries, arriving at the world-famous entertainment strip of today. Clearly written and carefully researched, Campanella’s book interweaves world events—from the Louisiana Purchase to World War II to Hurricane Katrina—with local and national characters, ranging from presidents to showgirls, to explain how Bourbon Street became an intriguing and singular artifact, uniquely informative of both New Orleans’s history and American society. While offering a captivating historical-geographical panorama of Bourbon Street, Campanella also presents a contemporary microview of the area, describing the population, architecture, and local economy, and shows how Bourbon Street operates on a typical night. The fate of these few blocks in the French Quarter is played out on a larger stage, however, as the internationally recognized brands that Bourbon Street merchants and the city of New Orleans strive to promote both clash with and complement each other. An epic narrative detailing the influence of politics, money, race, sex, organized crime, and tourism, Bourbon Street: A History ultimately demonstrates that one of the most well-known addresses in North America is more than the epicenter of Mardi Gras; it serves as a battleground for a fundamental dispute over cultural authenticity and commodification.

"Once upon a time," Chase writes, "while minding my own business drawing historical cartoons, I became intrigued with the realistic manner in which the street names of New Orleans told my city's lusty history...." He closes his preface thanking his wife, "who says that she does so believe that I was at the library all the times I said I was, and not at the Sazerac Bar. I also wish to thank the bartenders of the Sazerac Bar." This classic work is funny yet very informative. And in its new digital format with special features from Quid Pro Books, it serves as a great guide to the city's pathways to the present.

Download or read book Hope New Orleans written by Sally Asher and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Orleans is a city of beautiful contradictions, evidenced by its street names. New Orleans crosses with Hope, Pleasure and Duels. Religious couples with Nuns, Market and Race. Music, Arts and Painters are parallel. New Orleans enfolds its denizens in the protection of saints, the artistry of Muses and the bravery of military leaders. The city's street names are inseparable from its diverse history. They serve as guideposts as well as a narrative that braid its pride, wit and seedier history into a complex web that to this day simultaneously joins and shows the cracks within the city. Learn about Bourbon's royal lineage, the magnitude of Napoleon's influence, how Tchoupitoulas's history is just as long and vexing as its spelling and why mispronouncing such streets as Burgundy, Calliope and Socrates doesn't mean you are incorrect--it just means you are local Told with precision and photos as vibrant, irreverent and memorable as La Nouvelle Orleans itself, author Sally Asher delivers an updated and reinvented look at the city that care forgot.

Download or read book Bourbon Street B Drinking and the Sexual Economy of Tourism written by Angela R. Demovic and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B-drinking is a strategy whereby dancers, waitresses, and otherwise legally employed women illegally solicit drinks from tourists for pay. Unique to the ethnographic literature on strip clubs, Bourbon Street, B-Drinking, and the Sexual Economy of Tourism focuses on the role of alcohol sales in the sexual economy of Bourbon Street, New Orleans. Relying on historical material, Demovic reveals that the intimate encounters B-girls have provided have been a part of the tourism service economy since the beginning of the twentieth century. The evolution of “B-girldom” as an imagined identity created through changing representations of the practice over the decades have both reflected and constructed the experiences of women working in New Orleans’ nightclubs. The B-drinker is an iconic character found in fictional and nonfictional accounts of the city. B-girls inhabit an ambiguous structural position in the performance of heritage tourism in New Orleans. Participant observation and interviews reveal that by the 1990s women who worked as B-drinkers were significant stakeholders in French Quarter tourism, able to use their informal networks to seize power over working conditions in the tourism economy of Bourbon Street. Demovic focuses on how these marginalized but critical workers have responded to stigma by creating tight knit groups which continue to support one another decades after leaving their work on Bourbon Street. This book adds the New Orleans example to a broader understanding of how sex work evolves in ways that reflect regional history and culture. Widening the ethnographic lens, Demovic looks past strip tease itself and to the economic activities of such workers when they are off the stage.

Download or read book New Orleans on Parade written by J. Mark Souther and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Orleans on Parade tells the story of the Big Easy in the twentieth century. In this urban biography, J. Mark Souther explores the Crescent City's architecture, music, food and alcohol, folklore and spiritualism, Mardi Gras festivities, and illicit sex commerce in revealing how New Orleans became a city that parades itself to visitors and residents alike. Stagnant between the Civil War and World War II -- a period of great expansion nationally -- New Orleans unintentionally preserved its distinctive physical appearance and culture. Though business, civic, and government leaders tried to pursue conventional modernization in the 1940s, competition from other Sunbelt cities as well as a national economic shift from production to consumption gradually led them to seize on tourism as the growth engine for future prosperity, giving rise to a veritable gumbo of sensory attractions. A trend in historic preservation and the influence of outsiders helped fan this newfound identity, and the city's residents learned to embrace rather than disdain their past. A growing reliance on the tourist trade fundamentally affected social relations in New Orleans. African Americans were cast as actors who shaped the culture that made tourism possible while at the same time they were exploited by the local power structure. As black leaders' influence increased, the white elite attempted to keep its traditions -- including racial inequality -- intact, and race and class issues often lay at the heart of controversies over progress. Once the most tolerant diverse city in the South and the nation, New Orleans came to lag behind the rest of the country in pursuing racial equity. Souther traces the ascendancy of tourism in New Orleans through the final decades of the twentieth century and beyond, examining the 1984 World's Fair, the collapse of Louisiana's oil industry in the eighties, and the devastating blow dealt by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Narrated in a lively style and resting on a bedrock of research, New Orleans on Parade is a landmark book that allows readers to fully understand the image-making of the Big Easy.
Download or read book The Winters Tale written by Caroline Kinzer-Philipbar and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back Cover Summary “In The Winters’ Tale, Caroline Philipbar creates a rich tapestry of the life of Constance/Connie Winters. For much of the novel, Connie revels in the company of her second husband and the love of her life, Robert Winters, with whom she shares a passion for literature and the arts, for ideas and ideals, for the kind of appreciation of beauty (and grace) as truth, and truth as beauty of which John Keats sang. Connie and Bob are also keenly attached to their family members, especially Connie's son and her favorite niece and their respective children, whom she loves and nurtures. Unlike eternally beautiful and unchanging young on Keats's urn, however, Connie is a living, breathing woman subject to the losses and disappointments, some grievous, that time and age impose. Among the most telling and touching scenes of The Winters’ Tale are her own approaching winter, as the deep comforts and pleasures of her life are challenged by Bob's growing illness and death, by her disappointments, even heartbreaks, over her son's choices, and, in the world at large, by changes in contemporary tastes, mores, and animating principles. At the end of the novel, we see Connie embarking on the next stage of her life with a powerful sense of what it takes to move forward despite the "savage sadness" of loss.” Catherine Penner Cornell University
