Tensions surrounding the oil rig are high and the death has everyone on edge. Environmental activists are threatening to do whatever it takes to stop the structure from being completed, while rumors are being whispered about ancient curses surrounding this part of the ocean. Mounting evidence shows the death may not have been an accident at all. Was he killed by one of the activists or, perhaps more frighteningly, a member of his own crew? Rissi and Mason have to sort through not only a plethora of suspects, but also their own past and attraction to each other. Just as the case seems like it'll break open, worse news arrives. A tropical storm has turned their way and soon they're cut off from any rescue--and right where the killer wants them. It's a race to discover his identity before he eliminates the threat they pose.

Book excerpt: Internationally acclaimed and bestselling author Henning Mankell will be published for the first time in Canada by Knopf Canada with Depths. October 1914: the destroyer Svea emerged from the Stockholm archipelago bearing south-southeast. On board was Lars Tobiasson-Svartman, a naval engineer charged with making depth soundings to find a navigable channel for the Swedish navy. As a child Tobiasson-Svartman was fascinated by measurement; nothing is as magical as exact knowledge. His instinct for his profession is reflected in the comfortable domesticity he enjoys with his wife – herself meticulous in every detail. Close to the waters where soundings are taken Tobiasson-Svartman alights on a barren skerry, presumed uninhabited, and is surprised to discover there a young woman, Sara Fredrika. Despite her almost feral appearance, something about her strikes him to the core. The mission is a success and the Svea returns to Gothenburg. Tobiasson-Svartman, however, remains haunted by this chance encounter; his equilibrium has been disturbed, and he is now compelled to find any pretence to return to the remote islet. In Depths Mankell confirms his status as a writer deserving acclaim beyond the crime genre. By delving deep into the male psyche, he has produced a novel as tense and compelling in every way as the Wallander series, but also powerful, moving and ultimately tragic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Depth Psychology, Interpretation, and the Bible Brayton Polka shows that the ideas central to Freud's major texts can be truly understood only in light of a theory of interpretation whose ontology is consistent with biblical values. Polka argues that only this hermeneutic frees Freud's insight into the phenomenology of the unconscious from his contradictory metapsychology.

Book Depth of Field

Download or read book Depth of Field written by Geoffrey Cocks and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Director of some of the most controversial films of the twentieth century, Stanley Kubrick created a reputation as a Hollywood outsider as well as a cinematic genius. His diverse yet relatively small oeuvre—he directed only thirteen films during a career that spanned more than four decades—covers a broad range of the themes that shaped his century and continues to shape the twenty-first: war and crime, gender relations and class conflict, racism, and the fate of individual agency in a world of increasing social surveillance and control. In Depth of Field, leading screenwriters and scholars analyze Kubrick's films from a variety of perspectives. They examine such groundbreaking classics as Dr. Strangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey and later films whose critical reputations are still in flux. Depth of Field ends with three viewpoints on Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut, placing it in the contexts of film history, the history and theory of psychoanalysis, and the sociology of sex and power. Probing Kubrick's whole body of work, Depth of Field is the first truly multidisciplinary study of one of the most innovative and controversial filmmakers of the twentieth century.

Book Depth

  • Author : Michael Strevens
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2011-09-30
  • ISBN : 0674062574
  • Pages : 537 pages

Download or read book Depth written by Michael Strevens and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean for scientists to truly understand, rather than to merely describe, how the world works? Michael Strevens proposes a novel theory of scientific explanation and understanding that overhauls and augments the familiar causal approach to explanation. What is replaced is the test for explanatorily relevant causal information: Strevens discards the usual criterion of counterfactual dependence in favor of a criterion that turns on a process of progressive abstraction away from a fully detailed, physical causal story. The augmentations include the introduction of a new, non-causal explanatory relevance relation—entanglement—and an independent theory of the role of black-boxing and functional specification in explanation. The abstraction-centered notion of difference-making leads to a rich causal treatment of many aspects of explanation that have been either ignored or handled inadequately by earlier causal approaches, including the explanation of laws and other regularities, with particular attention to the explanation of physically contingent high-level laws, idealization in explanation, and probabilistic explanation in deterministic systems, as in statistical physics, evolutionary biology, and medicine. The result is an account of explanation that has especially significant consequences for the higher-level sciences: biology, psychology, economics, and other social sciences.

Book The Survival of Sewage Bacteria at Various Ocean Depths

Download or read book The Survival of Sewage Bacteria at Various Ocean Depths written by H. P. Vind and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disposal of sewage in the sea and adjoining estuaries is widespread. The outfalls are usually relatively close to shore and the sewage is discharged at depths of 200 feet or less. The purpose of the study undertaken by the Civil Engineering Laboratory (CEL), Port Hueneme, CA, and described in this technical note is to determine whether sewage bacteria would survive for longer or shorter periods if the sewage were discharged at greater depths, where there is less light, where the pressure is greater and where the temperature is lower. Bacteria of the species Escherichia coli, the most abundant bacterial species in human wastes, were employed in the study as representative sewage bacteria.

This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Book Title: "Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha-2023: An In-Depth Analysis" Book Summary: "Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha-2023: An In-Depth Analysis" provides a comprehensive exploration of India's new official criminal code, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which came into effect on July 1, 2024. This landmark legislation replaces the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which had governed India's criminal justice system since the British colonial era. The BNS represents a significant overhaul of the country's legal framework, reducing the number of clauses from the IPC's 511 sections to 358 clauses. This book meticulously examines these changes, focusing on the addition of 21 new offenses, including hate crimes, mob lynching, and cybercrimes associated with crime syndicates, which reflect the evolving nature of crime in modern India. Additionally, the BNS has removed offenses that have been deemed unconstitutional by the courts, ensuring that the law remains just and relevant. The book also delves into the increased penalties prescribed under the BNS for serious crimes such as murder or grievous hurt committed by five or more individuals, and sexual acts based on deceitful promises. One of the most notable reforms discussed is the increase in the age of criminal responsibility to 12 years, aligning India's criminal code with international standards and contemporary views on juvenile justice. Authored by experts in the field, this book offers an in-depth analysis of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, making it an essential resource for legal professionals, students, and anyone interested in understanding the future of India's criminal justice system.

Book Deep Play Exploring the Use of Depth in Psychotherapy with Children

Download or read book Deep Play Exploring the Use of Depth in Psychotherapy with Children written by Dennis McCarthy and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Therapeutic deep play has the capacity for children to express deep emotions, overcome seemingly insurmountable issues and resolve serious problems. Working with children in this profound way, therapists are able to not only eliminate symptoms, but to change the very structure of how children live with themselves, their defense and belief systems. The contributors to this book all work deeply, allowing children to take risks in a safe environment, and become fully absorbed in physical play. Chapters include play with deep sandboxes, clay, water, and various objects, and look at a range of pertinent case studies to demonstrate the therapeutic techniques in practice, alongside the theoretical concepts in which they are grounded. A new theoretical approach is established that takes from psychoanalysis as well as neuroscience and behaviourism, and offers a depth psychology approach in the treatment of children. This will be a valuable resource for anyone working therapeutically with children through play, including play therapists, psychotherapists, psychologists, arts therapists, counsellors, social workers and family therapists.
