Book excerpt: DR. NATHAN KESSLER, RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS, expands upon Einstein’s Theory of Relativity in an attempt to unite time and space in the Fourth Dimension. He experiments with tele-transportation of matter and energy across a man-made wormhole in the space-time continuum - which he refers to as THE KESSLER CROSSING-and successfully transports a famous person from antiquity to the present. How the world reacts and how his associates publicize and commercialize this astonishing achievement exposes the dark side of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late summer of 1944, SS-Obergruppenführer Wilhelm 'Willi' Bittrich found himself in the Netherlands surveying his II SS Panzer Corps, which was in a poor state having narrowly escaped the defeat in Normandy. He was completely unaware that his command lay directly in the path of a major Allied thrust: the 17 September 1944 launch of the largest airborne and glider operation in the history of warfare. Codenamed Operation Market Garden, it was intended to outflank the German West Wall and 'bounce' the Rhine at Arnhem, from where the Allies could strike into the Ruhr, Nazi Germany's industrial heartland. Such a move could have ended the war. However, Market Garden and the battle for Arnhem were a disaster for the Allies. Put together in little over a week and lacking in flexibility, the operation became an all-or-nothing race against time. The plan to link the airborne divisions by pushing an armoured division up a sixty-five-mile corridor was optimistic at best, and the British drop zones were not only too far from Arnhem Bridge, but also directly above two recuperating SS Panzer divisions. This new book explores the operation from the perspective of the Germans as renowned historian Anthony Tucker-Jones examines how they were able to mobilise so swiftly and effectively in spite of depleted troops and limited intelligence.

Book Crossing Under the Hudson

Download or read book Crossing Under the Hudson written by Angus Kress Gillespie and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossing Under the Hudson takes a fresh look at the planning and construction of two key links in the transportation infrastructure of New York and New Jersey--the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. Writing in an accessible style that incorporates historical accounts with a lively and entertaining approach, Angus Kress Gillespie explores these two monumental works of civil engineering and the public who embraced them. He describes and analyzes the building of the tunnels, introduces readers to the people who worked there--then and now--and places the structures into a meaningful cultural context with the music, art, literature, and motion pictures that these tunnels, engineering marvels of their day, have inspired over the years. Today, when new concerns about global terrorism may trump bouts of simple tunnel tension, Gillespie's Crossing Under the Hudson continues to cast a light at the end of the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the European Union, national income tax systems support charitable activities by way of preferential treatment. However, a number of Member States operate relief regimes which appear to trigger the question of compatibility with Union law with respect to the fundamental freedoms. In this first study to examine charity and donor taxation regimes across a wide range of Member States, the author focuses on compatibility with EU non-discrimination law. She examines twenty national regimes, both comparatively and from the perspective of overarching EU law. The countries covered are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Although charity and donor taxation falls within the competence of the Member States, they must nonetheless observe primary Union law and grant non-discriminatory treatment where a fact pattern falls within the ambit of the fundamental freedoms. In the course of defining this framework, the study addresses such issues as the following: types of relief schemes maintained for charities and donors; administrative requirements; international aspects (both inbound and outbound); privileged donations and capital gains treatment of in-kind donations; eligible donees; whether and to what extent charitable entities and donors can actually rely on the fundamental freedoms; specific applicability of each of the relevant fundamental freedoms; the issue of comparability; justifications for restrictive measures in Member State practice; and the issue of proportionality.

A group of specialists in the field has started to explore the possibilities and challenges of research on a wide, European scale. This volume contains the first overview and analysis of the different approaches, methodologies and sources that will stimulate and facilitate future comparative research. This volume first addresses the benefits of a media-driven approach, focussing on processes of content recycling, interactions between text and image, processes of production and consumption. A second perspective illuminates the distribution and markets for popular print, discussing audiences, prices and collections. A third dimension refers to the transnational dimensions of genres, stories, and narratives. A last perspective unravels the communicative strategies and dynamics behind European bestsellers. This book is a source of inspiration for everyone who is interested in research into transnational cultural exchange and in the fascinating history of popular print culture in Europe.

Izdihar finds a beautiful bead on the desert sands one night after a giant haboob dust storm. Desperate to leave the village before her parents marry her off to an old man, she asks the bead to take her back through its life. What follows is a trip that will take my readers through time and places, following the bead's life and all the things traded for it by a string of owners. Izdihar names the bead Bella, and an adventure begins that starts in Murano, Italy in the 1800s, more than two hundred years before. Together she and the rather cocky bead travel to Morocco, Senegal, Mali, Nigeria and back to Sudan.Izdihar's ticket home is based upon her asking the bead the right question. She learns many things along the way, including how much the present resembles the past, and the importance of not making instant judgements. Many unexpected experiences await Izdihar as she travels back two centuries and then forward to 2020. Fear, joy, humility, and confidence all arise during her travels. As Bella challenges Izdihar throughout their travels, they disagree frequently, admire events together, make snap decisions and their friendship grows. Eventually Izdihar is reunited with her family. Can you guess what the correct question was to facilitate that final trip home?
