Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kentucky Warbler, 1965, Vol. 41 At least 70% Of the woodlands in the region covered had been badly burned by forest fires in November; this burned out portion simply had no bird life, except for the crows we found. The Starlings seem to be entirely absent from Martin County this season; not one has been sighted this winter. The juncos, too, are almost totally non-existent, with only six on our count as compared to 79 last year. The scarcity of Tufted Titmice could well be due to the widespread forest fires and the destruction Of the natural food supply. Chickadees, titmice, and towhees were observed feeding on dogwood berries at the edge of a clearing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Hisyounger brother had fallen early in the conflict, borne to the end of his brief warfare by his impetuous valor; his aged mother had sunk under the tidings of the death of her latest-born; his sister was estranged from him by his po litical differences with her husband; his old family servants, men and women, had left him, and grass and weeds had already grown over the door-steps of the shut, noiseless cabins. Nay, the whole vast social system of the old regime had fallen, and he was henceforth but a useless fragment of the ruins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tempest and Sunshine, or Life in Kentucky H was the afternoon of a bright October day. The old ton clock had, just wlied the hour of four, when the Lexington and Frankfort daily stage was heard rattling over the stony pavement in the small town of V Ky. In a few moments the four panting steeds were reined up before the door of the Eagle, the principal hotel in the place. Mine host, a middle - aged, pleasant-looking man, came bustling out to inspect the new comers, and calculate how many would do justice to his beefsteaks, strong cofl'ee, sweet pota toes, and corn cakes, which were being prepared in the kitchen by Aunt Esther. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year Book of Kentucky Woods and Fields AR through the woods I have been led to-day - the quiet woods touched here and there with pale sun shine. The way has not seemed long, nor cold, but rather a holy way along which I have walked in peace unspeakable. For the trees are my friends, and their presence is a benediction. Beloved are they of the night, the stars, the winds, - and day by day they clothe themselves in new beauty; and upon them ever lies the grace of all sweet memories. Memories of the rain that came with the tender April sky - memories of many a long, bright Summer hour - memories of the Fall, when the light of a misty sun lingered and failed on the hills, and the fallen leaves lay in all the winding ways.
