Book excerpt: Kentucky Dam, the lowermost and the largest of the multiple-purpose projects of the Tennessee River system, is the key to effective control of discharges from the Tennessee, the largest tributary of the Ohio River. Located at river mile 22.4, Kentucky Dam is only 67.4 river-miles above Cairo, Illinois, and its large reservoir with more than 4,000,000 acre-feet of flood storage capacity occupies as strategic position for the reduction of flood crests on the lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The navigation lock at this project forms the lower gateway to the 184-mile long Kentucky Reservoir, one of a chain of nine reservoirs extending a year-round 9-foot navigation channel more than 600 miles to Knoxville, Tennessee, and connects this system of reservoirs to the major inland waterways of the great central Mississippi Valley with outlets for navigation to the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.

Book Exploring Kentucky Through Project Based Learning

Download or read book Exploring Kentucky Through Project Based Learning written by Carole Marsh and published by Gallopade International. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Kentucky through Project-Based Leaning includes 50 well-thought-out projects designed for grades 3-5. In assigning your students projects that dig into KentuckyÕs geography, history, government, economy, current events, and famous people, you will deepen their appreciation and understanding of Kentucky while simultaneously improving their analytical skills and ability to recognize patterns and big-picture themes. Project-based learning today is much different than the craft-heavy classroom activities popular in the past. Inquiry, planning, research, collaboration, and analysis are key components of project-based learning activities today. However, that doesnÕt mean creativity, individual expression, and fun are out. They definitely arenÕt! Each project is designed to help students gain important knowledge and skills that are derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subject areas. Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. Encourage your students to take charge of their projects as much as possible. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and guide. The projects are structured such that students can often work through the process on their own or through cooperation with their classmates.

Book Rania Matar She

Download or read book Rania Matar She written by and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits of American and Middle Eastern young women entering adulthood from Rania Matar, author of L'Enfant-Femme As a Lebanese-born American artist and mother, Rania Matar's (born 1964) cross-cultural experiences inform her art. She has dedicated her work to exploring issues of personal and collective identity through photographs of female adolescence and womanhood--both in the United States where she lives, and in the Middle East where she is from. Rania Matar: She focuses on young women in their late teens and early twenties, who are leaving the cocoon of home, entering adulthood and facing a new reality. Depicting women in the United States and the Middle East, this project highlights how female subjectivity develops in parallel forms across cultural lines. Each young woman becomes an active participant in the image-making process, presiding over the environment and making it her own. Matar portrays the raw beauty of her subjects--their age, individuality, physicality and mystery--and photographs them the way she, a woman and a mother, sees them: beautiful, alive.

Book excerpt: This approach to teaching basic math facts, grounded in years of research, will transform students' learning of basic facts and help them become more confident, adept, and successful at math. Mastering the basic facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is an essential goal for all students. Most educators also agree that success at higher levels of math hinges on this fundamental skill. But what's the best way to get there? Are flash cards, drills, and timed tests the answer? If so, then why do students go into the upper elementary grades (and beyond) still counting on their fingers or experiencing math anxiety? What does research say about teaching basic math facts so they will stick? In Math Fact Fluency, experts Jennifer Bay-Williams and Gina Kling provide the answers to these questions—and so much more. This book offers everything a teacher needs to teach, assess, and communicate with parents about basic math fact instruction, including The five fundamentals of fact fluency, which provide a research-based framework for effective instruction in the basic facts. Strategies students can use to find facts that are not yet committed to memory. More than 40 easy-to-make, easy-to-use games that provide engaging fact practice. More than 20 assessment tools that provide useful data on fact fluency and mastery. Suggestions and strategies for collaborating with families to help their children master the basic math facts. Math Fact Fluency is an indispensable guide for any educator who needs to teach basic math facts.

Book Creating a Confederate Kentucky

Download or read book Creating a Confederate Kentucky written by Anne E. Marshall and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Creating a Confederate Kentucky, Anne E. Marshall traces the development of a Confederate identity in Kentucky between 1865 and 1925, belying the fact that Kentucky never left the Union. After the Civil War, the people of Kentucky appeared to forget their Union loyalties and embraced the Democratic politics, racial violence, and Jim Crow laws associated with former Confederate states. Marshall looks beyond postwar political and economic factors to the longer-term commemorations of the Civil War by which Kentuckians fixed the state's remembrance of the conflict for the following sixty years.
