Book Museum Development and Cultural Representation

Download or read book Museum Development and Cultural Representation written by Jonathan Sweet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum Development and Cultural Representation critically examines the development of a museum and cultural heritage centre in the indigenous Kelabit Highlands in Sarawak, Malaysia. Building on their direct involvement in the development of the project, the authors appraise the process in retrospect through a thematic analysis. Themes covered include the project’s local and international contexts, community involvement and agency, the balance of tourism and authenticity, and the role of non-local partners. Through their analysis, the authors unpack the complexities of cultural representation and identity in heritage design practice, and investigates the relationship between capacity building and agency in cultural heritage management. Situating the project within international trends in museology, Museum Development and Cultural Representation offers a valuable case example of a heritage-making process in an indigenous community. It will be of interest to scholars and students studying cultural representation, as well as communities and museum professionals looking to develop similar projects.

Book Tourism in the Kelabit Highlands

Download or read book Tourism in the Kelabit Highlands written by Nils Beijer and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kelabit Highlands are located in Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia and one of the two states on the island of Borneo, collectively known as East-Malaysia. The Highlands can be considered one of the most remote locations within Sarawak, at an altitude of about 1100 meter it is only accessible by air using a 19-seater twin otter aircraft. The area is situated right in the centre of the World Wide Fund transboundary conservation initiative 'The Heart of Borneo'. Presently the Kelabit Highlands are changing as consequence of progress; a social generation shift, out-migration of the younger generations, logging companies are moving up in the area, introduction of modern communication facilities and the increase of accessibly. This book is analysing the current tourism situation in the Kelabit Highlands and determines how tourism can be used to optimise sustainable development and provides recommendations on how tourism can help generate long-term benefit to the environment, local economy and community.

Book Tuked Rini

    Book Details:
  • Author : Monica Janowski
  • Publisher : Nordic Institute of Asian Studies
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 9788776941819
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Tuked Rini written by Monica Janowski and published by Nordic Institute of Asian Studies. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative and visually engaging study presents a legend from Borneo in which the Kelabit hero Tuked Rini ventures out into the cosmos to do battle in remote spirit-laden places, returning to his wife with the heads of his enemies. Accompanied by audio material and additional resources that will be developed on a companion website, the work uses the legend to explore Kelabit ideas about life and cosmology--ideas of power or life force, the world of women centred on rice-growing and the relationship of men with the wild. Especially innovative is the way it brings together an orally told legend and a highly visually-oriented exploration of the way of life of the people who tell it. The book will be of interest to academics studying the culture, language and stories of Borneo but will also--with its striking illustrations--appeal to a wider audience.

Book Animism in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Animism in Southeast Asia written by Kaj Arhem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animism refers to ontologies or worldviews which assign agency and personhood to human and non-human beings alike. Recent years have seen a revival of this concept in anthropology, where it is now discussed as an alternative to modern-Western naturalistic notions of human-environment relations. Based on original fieldwork, this book presents a number of case studies of animism from insular and peninsular Southeast Asia and offers a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon – its diversity and underlying commonalities and its resilience in the face of powerful forces of change. Critically engaging with the current standard notion of animism, based on hunter-gatherer and horticulturalist societies in other regions, it examines the roles of life forces, souls and spirits in local cosmologies and indigenous religion. It proposes an expansion of the concept to societies featuring mixed farming, sacrifice and hierarchy and explores the question of how non-human agents are created through acts of attention and communication, touching upon the relationship between animist ontologies, world religion, and the state. Shedding new light on Southeast Asian religious ethnographic research, the book is a significant contribution to anthropological theory and the revitalization of the concept of animism in the humanities and social sciences.
