This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kathakali Explorer is about the work and life of two ethnologists who traveled extensively in the colonial India and documented various aspects of the Indian arts, languages and the South-Indian literature, and the people’s way of life. They authored the first monograph ever written on the Kathakali dance theater of Kerala following a whole-night performance they attended in Kottayam (Kerala) on January 14, 1916. This document is translated in the book with an introduction and annotations, followed by a travelogue kept by the two researchers about their life and work in India, the people they befriended on their tireless journey all the way from South India to Kashmir. About the publication of the monograph by A. Merwart in 1926 It (the monograph) reveals the outstanding fact that ethno-choreography came into being even before 1933, the publication date of Curt Sachs’ ‘Weltgeschlchte des Tanzes.’ The author (Merwart) describes the Kathakali dance drama in detail… He relates the drama to the culture in an authoritative manner. KURATH Gertrude P. (1963). Ethnomusicology 7(2): 141 – 142. The monograph assuredly stands out as a landmark in the entire range of substantive literature on Kathakali. KHOKAR M. (1997). Sruti (148, Jan.1997): 19 – 22.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Pick “Cosmetic, tool of rebellion, status signifier: Eyeliner has been all these and more. Moving through millenniums and across civilizations, Hankir gives the makeup its eye-opening due.” —The New York Times Book Review “An impressive, rigorously researched, winding path through centuries and over continents.” —NPR.org “I loved Eyeliner. Hankir approaches her subject with dedicated curiosity, humility, and humor, blending anthropology, travel writing, memoir and history. A treat.” —Kassia St. Clair, author of The Secret Lives of Color From the acclaimed editor of Our Women on the Ground comes a dazzling exploration of the intersections of beauty and power around the globe, told through the lens of an iconic cosmetic From the distant past to the present, with fingers and felt-tipped pens, metallic powders and gel pots, humans have been drawn to lining their eyes. The aesthetic trademark of figures ranging from Nefertiti to Amy Winehouse, eyeliner is one of our most enduring cosmetic tools; ancient royals and Gen Z beauty influencers alike would attest to its uniquely transformative power. It is undeniably fun—yet it is also far from frivolous. Seen through Zahra Hankir’s (kohl-lined) eyes, this ubiquitous but seldom-examined product becomes a portal to history, proof both of the stunning variety among cultures across time and space and of our shared humanity. Through intimate reporting and conversations—with nomads in Chad, geishas in Japan, dancers in India, drag queens in New York, and more—Eyeliner embraces the rich history and significance of its namesake, especially among communities of color. What emerges is an unexpectedly moving portrait of a tool that, in various corners of the globe, can signal religious devotion, attract potential partners, ward off evil forces, shield eyes from the sun, transform faces into fantasies, and communicate volumes without saying a word. Delightful, surprising, and utterly absorbing, Eyeliner is a fascinating tour through streets, stages, and bedrooms around the world, and a thought-provoking reclamation of a key piece of our collective history.

In Blind Dog Further down the Travel Trail, Kritcher tells of his lifetime of travel and how he and his wife, Rita, have fulfilled most of his travel dreams. A sequel to Blind Dog on the Travel Trail, this new chapter in the Kritcher travel saga grew from Rita’s daily journals, Larry’s flight-log pages, scribblings on cocktail napkins and the margins of guidebooks, photo album memories, and old road maps creased beyond recognition. The stories and photographs explore the couple’s visits to more than 130 countries. Blind Dog Further down the Travel Trail is an ambitious narrative of travel booty, absurdities, happiness, tribulations, sorrows, and survival covering seven continents and all five oceans, traveling by land, air, and sea.
