Based on years of research as part of the Country Indicators for Foreign Policy project at Carleton University, Exiting the Fragility Trap marks a major step toward remedying the lack of research into the so-called fragility trap. In examining the nature and dynamics of state transitions in fragile contexts, with a special emphasis on states that are trapped in fragility, David Carment and Yiagadeesen Samy ask three questions: Why do some states remain stuck in a fragility trap? What lessons can we learn from those states that have successfully transitioned from fragility to stability and resilience? And how can third-party interventions support fragile state transitions toward resilience? Carment and Samy consider fragility’s evolution in three state types: countries that are trapped, countries that move in and out of fragility, and countries that have exited fragility. Large-sample empirical analysis and six comparative case studies—Pakistan and Yemen (trapped countries), Mali and Laos (in-and-out countries), and Bangladesh and Mozambique (exited countries)—drive their investigation, which breaks ground toward a new understanding of why some countries fail to see sustained progress over time.

Book excerpt: Gondwana, comprising more than 64% of the present day continental mass, is home to 33% of large igneous provinces (LIPs) and key to understanding the lithosphere–atmosphere system and related tectonics that influenced global climate and sediment production on Earth. Gondwana has many of the largest LIPs, with areas of 200 000 to 2 000 000 km2. Several Gondwana LIPs erupted near active continental margins as well as within continents. The rifting of continents continued even after LIP emplacement or was aborted by a coeval compression and did not open into an ocean. Important contemporary frontiers include understanding significant amounts of synchronous silicic volcanic rocks in mafic LIPs, bringing better stratigraphic constraints supported by precise age dating and volume estimation of LIPs, the possible link between LIP emplacement and biotic crisis, refinement of the existing petrogenetic models and assessing large eruptions and associated societal risk. Drug addiction, according to reports, affects a large number of people, including teenagers, young adults, and even the elderly. The rise in drug abuse in Kashmir can be attributed to a number of factors. One of the primary causes is unemployment and poverty, which has led many people to turn to drugs as a means of coping with their problems. Another factor is the ease with which drugs can be obtained, which has increased as a result of porous borders with neighbouring countries. Furthermore, the region's ongoing conflict has created a sense of hopelessness and despair among the people, leading them to seek solace in drugs. To combat the problem of drug abuse, the government and NGOs have taken several measures, including awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programs, and crackdowns on drug peddlers. However, much more needs to be done to address the root causes of drug addiction and provide support and resources to those struggling with drug abuse.
