Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Illinois there are quite a few small cities, ranging in size from 100,000 to 500,000 population. They all have downtowns with some large buildings, some institutions of higher learning, outlying towns and farm areas, mass transit, a variety of recreation. Kankakee is such a place. The area is over 100,000 population, has beautiful homes and churches, up to date medical facilities, many restaurants and nightclubs, festivals, manufacturing centers, entertainment, a courthouse, business districts, even a daily newspaper and local radio stations. Also and interstate highway and railroad commuting. This book describes some of the history of Kankakee and also a lot of the present. Every city has problems and so does Kankakee. It seems that many of those problems could be alleviated with an upturn in America's economy. Some jobs for people to pay their way and pay taxes for the benefits of living in this place. It has the advantages of city life and also the accessibility to rural life, including its special resource the Kankakee River. There is some crime in Kankakee, but not enough to chase homeowners and buyers away. The air seems clean and the neighborhoods are quiet. The people are polite and the kids seem well-behaved. A step into the not distant past. The material here is written in verse form because it seems to me to be easier to read and understand. Kankakee is a very special place. Download or read book Around Momence written by Kevin McNulty and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As evidenced by the historic record of Burt E. Burrough's book entitled Tales of an Old Border Town and along the Kankakee (1925), the city of Momence owes its origins to the flow of the Kankakee River through eastern Kankakee County. This diverse tributary linked marshy areas in Indiana to the adjacent fertile fields on the Illinois side. Momence became a beacon, providing traders with the latest conveniences and a break from the frontier. Years later, the historic Dixie Highway crossed the river at Momence, assuring a modern era for the city. In her writings of 1983-1984, the great educator and historian Kay Hess revealed the community spirit, entrepreneurial zeal, and celebratory nature of Momence through the many personalities of this rural city. Today, as Momence approaches its 200th year, massive urban sprawl promises to wash over this ever-changing community and add to its history.

Download or read book Riverine written by Angela Palm and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angela Palm grew up in a place not marked on the map, her house set on the banks of a river that had been straightened to make way for farmland. Every year, the Kankakee River in rural Indiana flooded and returned to its old course while the residents sandbagged their homes against the rising water. From her bedroom window, Palm watched the neighbor boy and loved him in secret, imagining a life with him even as she longed for a future that held more than a job at the neighborhood bar. For Palm, caught in this landscape of flood and drought, escape was a continually receding hope. Though she did escape, as an adult Palm finds herself drawn back, like the river, to her origins. But this means more than just recalling vibrant, complicated memories of the place that shaped her, or trying to understand the family that raised her. It means visiting the prison where the boy that she loved is serving a life sentence for a brutal murder. It means trying to chart, through the mesmerizing, interconnected essays of Riverine, what happens when a single event forces the path of her life off course.
