Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 25: May, 1890 While confined in the dungeon the condi tions were such that it was imprudent to con verse aloud ou the subjects in which they were so much concerned, resulting from their perilous situation they accordingly explained their feelings to each other by means of writ ing letters and receiving replies. Ridley, keenly sensing the ordeal he had to go through and that he needed strength, wrote to Latimer thus: For surely, except the Lord assists me with His gracious aid in the time of His service, I know I shall play but the part of a white-livered knight. But truly my trust is in Him, that in my infirmity He shall make me strong and that He can make the coward in His cause to fight like a man. In reply, Latimer said Except the Lord help me, you say the truth, it is vain for me to strive. 'for without me, ' saith He, 'you can do nothing, much less suffer death by your adversaries, ' through the bloody law now prepared against us. But it followeth, 'if you abide in me, and my word abide in you, ask what ye will and it shall be done for you.' What can be more comforting! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 22: June 1, 1887 In our illustration we see a temple of bronze, dedicated to this man. It cost an immense sum of money, as it is finished in the most expensive and elaborate style. In every city of the empire above the third class there is at least one temple dedicated to Confucius. All persons, the emperor himself not excepted, are bound to worship here. In the larger temples images are seldom found, but the sage and his followers are worshiped through the medium of their tablets, these being painted strips of boards standing upright upon which the names and titles of the deceased are carved. The tablet of Confucius stands in the center of the main hall facing the court, while 011 either side and facing inward are four tablets of his most illustrious disciples. Ten tablets, five on either side, stand in front of these and face inward; these are for the followers next in order of merit. Then 011 either side of a long room which is in front of the hall are tablets of fifty eight other disciples. Before each tablet is a stand for offer ings, incense and candles. Literary men of the nation especially worship the sage, and boys about to enter school are first taken to the altar of the world's most illustrious scholar and righteous being, that they may invoke his aid in their studies. Mr. Nelsen, thereupon, although he had refused to perform the labor himself, began to advocate my claim, and to urge upon him the necessity of undertaking the labor, arguing that it was folly in him to refuse on a relig ious basis to do it, and strenuously urged him to accomodate me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 22: February 15, 1887 In this connection it may be well to say a few words concern ing ventilation. Most people require eight hours' sleep - that is, one-third of their lives is spent in their bed-chambers and yet we have known persons who seemed to think that any kind of a place, however narrow and contracted it might be, that would hold a bed would do for a bed-chamber. This is a great mistake. There is no one room, probably, in the house which is occupied so steadily and for so long a time as the bed chamber. And though our bodies are locked in slumber, and we are unconscious the greater portion of the time, the system requires pure air as much as if it were wide awake. Bed rooms, therefore, should be commodious and well ventilated. How sickening it is to go into a room where one or two per sons have slept through the night, which has not been ven tilated! Even the ordinary sense of smell, which is not acute enough to detect many poisons which are in the atmosphere, is shocked and disgusted by the emanations that float in the air. N o wonder the people sleeping in such an atmosphere arise exhausted and feeling badly, having no appetite and hav ing a bad taste in their mouths! Such an atmosphere is liter ally loaded with poison, and good health cannot be enjoyed by one who breathes it for any length of time. The requisites of health are: regular habits, daily exercise, personal cleanliness, simple diet, and moderation in eating, drinking and the gratification of other appetites; and children should be taught the value of these habits and the excellent results which will follow their observance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 22: September, 1887 It shall now be my purpose to show that research into reli gions antiquities of these lands proves not only the origin of the people, as described in the book of Mormon, but proves their various beliefs to have been as stated in the sacred history. It will be well for us to bear in mind certain facts conceded by historians and philosophers concerning either the growth or the abandonment of religious ideas. To show that what I have asserted concerning the survival of the old forms and legends is correct, I quote from Bancroft's Native Races, Vol. III, the following paragraph, which is worthy of study as substantiating my position, and also because of its careful pre scutation of the results of his study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 22: Organ for Young Latter-Day Saints; August 1, 1887 A few years ago a company of Indians were captured on the Western frontier. Among them were a number of stolen children who had been with the savages for years. Word was sent through out the region inviting all who had lost children to come and see if among the little captives they could recognize their own. A long way off was a woman who had been robbed of her darlings - a boy and a girl. With mingled hope and fear she came; with throbbing heart she approached the group.' They were strange to her. She came nearer and with eyes filled with mother-love peered into their faces, one after another, but there was nothing in any that she could claim; nor Was there anything in her to light up their cold faces. With the dull pain of despair at her heart she was turning away, when she paused, choked back the tears, and in soft, clear notes, began a simple song she used to'sing her little ones of Jes us and' heaven. Not a line was completed before a boy and girl sprang from the group, exclaiming Mammal mammal and she foldedher lost ones to her bosom. So lives a mother's early influence in the hearts of her children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 22: April 15, 1887 When the first light of day dawned we were ready in three lines of battle to attempt the assault. To oppose our progress there was first the strongly guarded line of pickets, then the abatis, next the chevaux dc fri'se, after this, a wide deep ditch half filled with water, and dug just outside the fortifications, then the-latter bristling with ugly-looking cannon; and worst of of all there was the sheltered enemy, who was trained to be wilfully careless in the use of fire arms. The pickets were sur prised, a'nd the abatis caused the first haThe troops sent against the fort on our left failed to capture it, and thus we were assailed in turn from front and flank. We were hard pressed to maintain our position, and finally got to such close quarters that a five foot bank of earth was all that intervened between us and the enemy. An attempt was made to precipitate a body of men over this into the midst of the foe. An ofiicer placed himself at the head of the tr00ps assigned to this dreadful task, and ordered them to follow him. The soldiers hesitated, but, without a moment's delay, he sprang to the top of the bank, but was pushed back with the butt end of the muskets of his chivalrous foes. Three times was this scene enacted, when the order for the assault was countermand-cd. Why this officer was not shot or bayonetted, we could not conjecture unless his bravery inspired such respect that none of the enemy felt like killing him.
